The Walt Disney Company announced Tuesday it has agreed to buy Lucasfilm, which includes the Star Wars franchise, for $4.05 billion in cash and stock from George Lucas.

The deal includes a tentative release date of Stars Wars Episode 7, along with the possibility of growing the franchise with more feature films.

“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, said in a statement.

Current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, will become President and report to Walt Disney Chairman Alan Horn.

“This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value,” Iger said.

I wonder how long it will be before they do a reboot....
Episode 7 might be interesting, depending on who they get to work on it. With this change, I assume the war between Lucasfilm and the guild system is over.

I reckon Lucas finally landed that one final mega-payday he was always holding out for. LOL

I shudder to think of how bad Disney can screw up the franchise. They’ll probably make a prequel that centers around a gay Bothan planet or something.....

I’ve trained my kids to refer to Disney as “The Ministry of Culture.”

The Walt Disney Company announced Tuesday it has agreed to buy Lucasfilm . . . for $4.05 billion in cash and stock from George Lucas.

If Disney is the buyer, why is Lucas paying them $4 billion?

LOL @ Grammar

I really wish they’d resume teaching reading, writing and arithmetic.

4 billion?

what a freaking deal!

the licensing rights alone are worth 100 times that, and the rights to future films... freaking priceless.

deal of the century.

It’s easier to write breathless sentences with modern word processors. A comma isn’t absolutely needed after “stock” but it helps.

I was thinking the same thing....a planet of Jerry Sanduskys which would be made to look normal!!!

I wonder if the planet'sflag would be the 'GAY PRIDE' Flag?

Lucas isn’t paying them. They are paying Lucas to obtain Lucasfilm from him.

Maybe that includes Lucas getting a piece of all future proceeds.

I got a roll of 35mm film I never developed.

They can buy it for a kewel $1million.

It’s 20 years old so there might be something neat on it, not sure what.

It's interesting Lucas is doing this now. One first wonders is his health if a factor. Disney lawyers have a good reputation for aggression. Will the cottage industry of fan films and so forth that Lucasfilm has allowed to thrive now be under threat of termination?

I can't say I'm enthused for an Ep 7. One the upside a high quality release of the "original" films may be in the cards some day.

That's my fear. The "Star Wars: Revisited" guy in particular deserves all kinds of accolades for his work, but Disney will likely just order him to cease and desist.

Top dollar.

“I shudder to think of how bad Disney can screw up the franchise.”

If anyone can screw this up, Disney can : )
