Citing long lines and a lengthy ballot, Gelber asks Scott to extend early voting

Former state Sen. Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach, called on Gov. Rick Scott today to extend early voting through Sunday. The eight-day early voting period is scheduled to end Saturday.

Gelber, who ran unsuccessfully for attorney general in 2010, said the fact that the Legislature cut the early voting period from 14 days to eight days coupled with the “absurd length of the ballot” _ which the Legislature used to place 11 constitutional amendments on _ have lead to long lines and delays for Florida voters.

Gelber said extending the early-voting period for another day “won’t solve this problem, (but) it will certainly improve the situation.” Gelber noted former Govs. Charlie Crist and Jeb Bush extended voting times during elections.

In California, there is never a line. Just walk right in, ask for a ballot.
It was the same for me in Illinois (DuPage County). They didn't have early voting, and they didn't encourage absentee voting, and I never had to wait more than 5 minutes to vote on election day.

I'm not sure why things are so dramatically different here in Orlando.

In Nevada, it depends on where you go to early vote. If you go to the supermarkets, there is always a long line. If you go the the library, zero line, literally zero. (hmmmm).

Wasn’t it decided in 200o that you couldn’t change rules in the middle of an election? I say no. Vote on election day. Its always worked for me.

Didn’t they get the early voting extended on the front side through court order?

Thanks for the ping. I am pinging my FL Freeper list here as received this message from a fellow FL Freeper. To those who go to the polls to vote, please note message below.
*************

Warning! We have a lot of PETITIONS that are trying to get your signature at the polls!

1. Victoria Baer personally got asked to sign a PETITION TO PROTECT OUR FISHING AND WATERS...what THAT REALLY IS...is to SHUT DOWN MORE OCEAN AND FISHING FROM US...TO LIMIT OUR FOOD SUPPLY AND INCOME! THIS IS AGENDA 21 IN OUR OCEANS!!!

2. Then there is another PETITION.... To take MORE land from private owners and turn it into FEDERAL LAND... THIS IS AGENDA 21 over our land ...see here for more details! http://lynn-a.blogspot.com/2012/08/new-florida-state-wide-petition-drive.html 3. DOC STAMPS................Folks will be asked to sign a petition at the polls to allow this to come before the Florida state legislature. This is not an amendment to the state constitution, yet.

The county governments use all the moneys currently collected from the doc stamps when there is a land sale. If those county governments have to part with some of those funds, then the individual governments will be knocking on the doors of the individual taxpayers in their counties to make up that loss.

Therefore, do not sign any petition. Furthermore, lands bought through the Florida Forever 200 program remove private lands from tax rolls, thereby decreasing the tax base in the individual counties and increasing the tax liability on the remaining taxpayers within each county in Florida.

Gov. Rick Scott has attempted to end the Florida Forever 2000 Program for the reasons I have just described. As here in Putnam Co. we don't need some do-good entity buying another 1200 acres of swamp land. The bureaucracy that administers the Florida Forever program see the end of their jobs and are using this DOC STAMP scam as a last ditch effort to save their world.

Tell them to go get a real job and stop living off of us like parasites. This program has already spent $300 million of our money over the last 12 years. It is time to stop the spending!”

Please send this explanation to all on your e-mail list. Thanks

OMG Election day voting is not so terrible. There are lots more polling places and much shorter lines. Democrats should try it sometime. Gelber just wants an extra Sunday of black churches marching their flock to the polls. Not going to happen.

***I'm not sure why things are so dramatically different here in Orlando***

I believe the reason is because of great enthusiasm to vote for R & R - plus the long Constitutional amendment listing.

I have voted early in Orlando since early voting started - NEVER encountered any line at all. Given the enthusiasm gap of Elephants over Asses, I have to speculate that this is an harbinger of a sweep for 'Pubbies [in Fla]!

To: Bob Ireland; All

Lies have been VERY long all during early voting which ends tomorrow!

I believe things will go well in the Orlando to Tampa area. I also believe it might be very close in the Broward/Miami Dade area. Folks are turning there too!

Heard Romney may come down to the South Florida area over the weekend. If anyone heres of where and when, please ping me and post on our FR FL board. Thanks!
