Woman Blocked from Voting over 'Bible' T-Shirt

A woman was blocked from early voting near Austin, Texas, last week after wearing a T-shirt that said "Vote the Bible."

A pro-family group called Texas Values said election workers told resisdent Kay Hill at the Taylor City Hall polling place in Williamson County her shirt was quote "offensive."

She was told to turn the shirt inside out, go home and change, or cover up the words "Vote the Bible."

Hill tried to disagree but was eventually forced to cover up her Bible message. Poll workers reportedly provided a jacket for her to wear over the shirt.

"It's outrageous that a person of faith would be mistreated this way while trying to vote," Jonathan Saenz, president of Texas Values, said. "If this isn't voter intimidation, I don't know what is."

Or other t-shirts “Vote White” ... “Vote Black”.... “Vote Conservative” .... “Vote Liberal”....

Sorry to say, she is wrong on this one.

I wouldn’t want to see a “Vote the Koran” T-shirt at a polling station.

Go in to vote carrying/dragging a cross.

Correct. Texas law prohibits "electioneering" within 100 feet of any polling place.

Personally, I agree with her T-shirt slogan -- BUT, IMO,... any shirt with, "VOTE -- [anything]" displayed on it is blatant "electioneering", and deserves to be excluded from polling places.

Exactly, it’s called electioneering, and it’s generally prohibited within a certain distance of the polls.

But there was no ad promoting any candidate on the t-shirt, so it was not illegal. So she should be able to wear it into the polling place. What we have here is someone interpretation of what is acceptable to wear, and they are dead wrong.

Those wouldn’t be prohibited, since they are not attempting to influence anyone’s vote, therefore, not electioneering.

I think some people like pushing other people around.

When in doubt wear a burka...eveyone is afraid to mess with that sh*t!. s/

Heh... just think if someone applied a dozen or so "Nobama" iron-on transfers to a burka? My, that would sure cause some conflicted feelings. ;-)

It’s not outside the regulations when they slap the word “Vote” on it. They’ve put themselves squarely inside the regulations at that point.

I suspect if she had been wearing “John 3:16”, that would have been allowed, but the imperative, “Vote ...” triggered their response.

I am not familiar with the wording of the regulations, so you may be right.

Would a T-shirt that just said "Vote" be prohibited?

Having been a election judge in Texas, you would be the one
to ask. If the bible is not running for office or if no
bible related issue is on the ballot, would it still be
considered electioneering to wear a tee-shirt that had printed
on it “vote the bible”?

The article doesn't say anything about electioneering, it says
offensive.

How much longer will the American flag be acceptable?

Probably not, since it’s not trying to influence the vote in any way, but saying “Vote This” or “Vote That” clearly is an attempt to influence others’ votes, even if it is vague.

"'Illegal' is more like it. A shirt that says 'vote' anything is a political message and should be left at home when voting."

At my polling place, the poll workers give out "I just voted" stickers to people when they vote. They should all be put in jail.

"No one is allowed to bring anything into the polling place that makes anyone think that they are electioneering for one side of the other."

How does her shirt favor one side or the other? It is as American as apple pie.

Forced??
I would have called the Police and requested assistance in getting in to vote.
These peons have no Constitutional Authority to prevent people from voting

Ok, here’s my idea incorporating everything we’ve discussed here:

Wear a Burka with American flag imprinted on the front & BIBLE written right under it! That should work!

Exactly. This was not electioneering for the simple reason that the "Bible" is not on the ballot. END of discussion. Police should have been called, and these people should have been arrested if they didn't back down. If the cop refused the arrest, a formal complaint should have been made, and these people should be sued in their personal capacities, because they have NO authority to stop this person from voting. NONE. This is fricking outrageous.
