Homes and businesses in the Lower East Side and East Village are still without power and under water. Residents began dumpster diving outside a Key Food supermarket Thursday, looking for whatever food they can take. Jonathan Vigliotti reports.
I suppose I'll flamed for saying this, but I can't help but feel a little skeptical about this.
I realized it's terrible there. But, I mean, I've gone more than a week before with no food before, but it would take me more than a few days of hunger until I dipped into some spoiled dumpster food.
OK flame away.
Is Bette Midler Diving?
Why aren’t the Bam supporters out there handing out stuff to those in need?
Because it’s the Gubment’s job that’s why.
Sounds like Obama's dream has come true.
...let me tell ya, those “nicely” dressed individuals would be dumpster diving ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT, dregs at anytime during any week and any month
Wet dream, that is........
...looking like Greece more and more each day ...
I’ll bet there were Union busses close by, providing transportation for the Photo Op’s?
....just another lib driven Geraldo/Shep disastrous moment in American history.
Do I remember MSNBC criticizing Romney for collecting food the other4 day? Maybe they would like to re-examine that position in light of dumpster diving.
And my husband whines because I hoard Progresso soup.
during katrina, the levees failed on tuesday and GWBush had supplies arriving on thursday... yet the press was going on about how Bush must hate black people because they weren’t getting any support
Sandy ended more then 48 hours ago... and these people still have no help
does this mean 0bama hates white people?
:)
Obama halfway doesn’t like white people.
Maybe the dumpster divers should send a cable to the WH saying that they are starving. Man, those Muslim parody films pack a wallop!

0bummer doesn’t like people:
There is a whole subculture of those that dumpster dive for food; they call themselves “Freegans”.
Some just do it for the cash, some because they are nutty libs who believe we live in a wasteful culture. One of the contestants on Project Runway this year was a “Freegan”.
My guess is they found a few of these for their photo op. They’ll manage to find a lot more if Romney gets elected.
FRAUD> There are plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, Duane Reade’s, etc, etc. open. This is just a sham. They all look like Democrats.
What do you do if you perceive your kids are starving?
If the store shelves start emptying out, I always say the real SHTF is when the last gallon of milk gets sold...
There was a whole week of warning. A knapsack with a few can goods, PB&J, bananas, water....geez....what’s wrong with these people...Yes, it’s a mess but if you’re hungry...it’s likely your own damn fault.
OK, checked out the video now.
I’ve seen this before. Sometimes it’s not so much desperation, but when a power outage happens, the store has to throw out all their food or risk a lawsuit if people get sick. That does not mean the food is bad. It’s pretty cold in NY right now.
People who are freegans or a little less scrupulous than most can do pretty good. There are lots of things in the refrigerated cases that would stay good for quite a while. I mean, wouldn’t take fish or such but some things would still be good. Butter, for instance - people used to keep that merely in a cool place.
Your skepticism is well founded. The real story is that stores, by law, have to throw away food that is nearing the expiration date. Locals are grabbing it up as it gets thrown out. They see it as a windfall, not as a way to stave off starvation.
I guess Obama didn’t answer their call within 15 minutes...
I know a lot of people who do that.
“where else can you do a half a million things - all at a quarter to three”
Apparently none of those things is having enough food in your house to last for more than the next meal.
This what happens when you are a passive child who counts on the government. Grow up and man up. Maybe prepare before the next disaster...
More accurately, the current meal.
I saw a news clip last night about rescues in Hoboken. No power, no food. I understand wanting to get out of the cold (though I think it was about 40 degrees, which would be doable if everyone was in the same room, used blankets, etc.), but how do you not have food? There was a warning days before hand. And as a parent, how do you let sh$t happen and you haven’t provided for some granola bars, shelf stable or powdered milk, canned food that can be eaten cold, etc.?
I’m not talking about prepper levels or preparedness. I understand if someone doesn’t have 4 yrs of food in the basement. BUT everyone can have 2 weeks of food in a closet. It’s hard to be sympathetic when it only took a little foresight to not need the government to feed your sorry a$$.
By the time the power is back on, it's spoiled.
LOL.... this is as phony as a $3 bill.
LOL.... this is as phony as a $3 bill.
Wouldn’t it be cool if Romney managed to air lift in a bunch of canned goods, and lowered it right in front of that reporter?
That would shut the cameras off fast.
Oh, puleeze! The reporter is saying the people are “literally” prying open the dumpster to get at the spoiled food because they are so hungry. That does it. I’ve had it with all the whining and dramatics. It’s no wonder America is in the very, very sad shape it’s in. Either this is msm hype or those people are hamming it up for the cameras. Ok, so some of them might be that STUPID. Who dies of starvation in this land of plenty within 72 hours? No one! Geez, people, get a grip and eat all that Halloween candy you didn’t get to hand out. Like there’s not a box of crackers, a can of soup and a juice box in your cabinet.
Hmm, with all these grocery store dumpsters loaded with rotten food, that tells me their shelves were not emptied in the last hours before the storm. IOW, someone is lying. Fine, the fresh meat will go bad but when Texans have power outages, we fire up the bbq and throw block parties.
Our grocery store has a couple huge grills for promotions of hot dogs, fajitas and bbq during the holidays. I’m sure most grocery stores either have something like that or at least sell small grills. They also sell charcoal, propane tanks and probably bundles of wood so why didn’t they do a little community service by having a parking lot party? Grill the fresh meat. Throw bags of frozen vegetables in some large pots (again, I’m sure they sell pots in the store) and give away free soup. Smash up the pot pies and dump them into a roasting pan to be heated. Toast up the frozen breads. Ice cream topped with thawing frozen fruit for the kids! That would be on tv and headquarters would give the manager who had two small brain cells to think that up would get a nice bonus in his next paycheck.
Home freezers will keep foods safe for 3-4 days without power. Day one without power is ice cream day, yum. Day two is bbq day. Day three and four is anything that is still cold. Prior to the storm (not that the “supposed” dumpster divers will learn), pack your freezer tight and fill in any open spaces with containers of water so that the frozen water will help keep it cool. As the water thaws, you have drinking water.
It’s only been two days.
These people didn’t think to stock up?
It’s not like the storm was a surprise.
Many people don’t have enough food to last out the week if they lost their jobs and some don’t even have a roof over their head. Most pantry’s run out of food so people go to the supermarkets and dumpster dive.
Welcome to Obama’s America.
“I’ve gone more than a week before with no food before, but it would take me more than a few days of hunger until I dipped into some spoiled dumpster food.”
Sure, but what you can’t see in that video is how many of those nicely dressed folks have hungry, whining children to feed at home. I’m sure you wouldn’t even think about going a week without trying to feed them, by any means necessary.
A single burner 20# propane tank can heat enough soup for 10 people for one year. A few cases of soup take very little space and cost little. There is no reason for dumpster diving unless you’re a liberal.
“And my husband whines because I hoard Progresso soup.”
My wife does the same with my Spam and baked beans...
Yea sure only liberals dumpster dive.:)Hungry people do it.
I don't know but it sure makes them poo a lot.
Sandy will curtail obesity among dumpster diving homless in New York
I've read posts from people like that. They claim they'd rather just die on the spot than have to struggle through even the shortest of emergencies. When you ask what that would do to their kids, they are too focused on themselves to care. It's sickening that there are people like that.
Obama’s America.
Where’s Alec BAldwin, Bette Midler, Bill Maher etc?
Where’s FEMA?
Totally agree with you. “It is their own damn fault” for not listening. When you have a whole week of warning, why in the world would you not at least go out and buy basic food supplies and grab a couple of gas cans just in case. We believe in being prepared all the time.
Mrs. NHD
A friend was at a local supermarket yesterday; there was a little skim milk left, no bread.
While I think people are responsible for themselves, I’m getting the impression that a lot of people who should have been ordered out weren’t.
Ping.
The better dressed a person is, the less likely they have ever gone hungry for more than a few hours. Besides, do they not have more than two days of canned food in their house. Cold green beans may not sound appetizing, but hunger is a a great seasoning.
Maybe Anna Wintour and Sarah Jessica Parker will host a dumpster dive dinner party to raise $4 million for disaster relief
A knapsack wouldn’t even carry the water a person would need for a week. We’re OK because I have prepper levels of camping material (including food), but when power, gas, and stores are out of the picture it is rough.
