No need to keep quiet, just don't say stupid stuff. Opposition to abortion in cases of rape and incest is perfectly reasonable. The problem folks like Akin, and apparently this congressional candidate, have is they fumble their words and end up saying either ridiculous or "insensitive" stuff the media can use against them.
The media is out to get Republicans on this (and most issues). With that in mind it is probably a safe bet that it isn't wise to say things like "rape thing" or "legitimate rape".

Murder requires conscious choice. Sucking out your unborn child with a vacuum and shredding her to bits qualifies.
A raped woman would not wait months to get an abortion. She’d head straight to her local pharmacy and get a morning after pill. I do not think a wife coming home to her husband saying she’s been raped and her husband saying well them’s the breaks and you’ll have to have the baby.
It would take me a day, two at the most to get a morning after pill and end it right then. Don’t go with that “well you carried it for seven months and now you want it aborted” scene with me.
No, they’re your principles.
Question: How many of our guys need to get beat down in the national press over saying stuff like this before the rest finally figure out not to say it because they’re going to get clobbered every time? I’m not saying don’t be pro-life. I’m saying don’t say stuff like that. You can argue pro-life without being stupid.
