How desperate is hurricane-ravaged New Jersey? Not desperate enough to suspend a union monopoly that keeps the state in the bottom ten states for economic competitiveness (and #48 for business friendliness). Relief crews from Alabama who were specifically called to New Jersey found themselves diverted to Long Island, NY after they arrived because they use non-union labor. Alabama is a right to work state.

WAFF-TV of Hunstville, AL reports:
Crews from Huntsville, as well as Decatur Utilities and Joe Wheeler out of Trinity headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can't do any work there since they're not union employees....
Understandably, Moore said they're frustrated being told "thanks, but no thanks."

The day the unions decided that the union was more important than the people they were hired to serve is the day that unions should have been abolished and their contracts voided. Period.
Unfortunately these relatives are politically ignorant. Hate to say that about my own mother but she’s working 24/7 running a small business so she doesn’t follow the news.
I feel bad about this but I told my mother not to vote since she doesn’t really follow politics.

New Joisey’s loss is my gain. I live in long island, new York and have been without electricity since Monday morning.
“They didn’t build that”, because Obama’s union buddies wouldn’t let them. I guess the union thugs didn’t get the memo (or couldn’t read it) about putting priority on solving the problem rather than following the rules.
That’s the way I feel. If they don’t need non union help, fug em.

I have a sister and brother about a half mile from each other in Shirley. They seemed to have been spared.
I was Manhattan-born, raised on Long Island in Huntington, East Northport, and Plainview/Hicksville.
In CA. 43 years now.
I'm from New Jersey, and the next time anyone tells you they need your assistance here to help in a disaster recovery, just tell them to "f#%& off."
We saw the same sh!t in the recovery effort after 9/11, which is one reason why it's more than 11 years later and Ground Zero still hasn't been restored.
You say this if it’s a bad thing.
Being a do as your told without the right to do what’s right doesnt make sense to me .
I’m in NJ and have no grudge for those
non union workers.
Having them spread across the state this cost us maybe an hour or two extra wait. Like that’s gonna make a real difference. And I’m sure they won’t loose any sleep over it.
At least they won’t get bit in the ass
like their fellow union workers.

they pulled this business before too, back at the original 9/11 people from all over the country went to
twin towers to help & they were practically run out on a rail because they were non union !!! After
hearing about that much of my sympathy for the *union workers* that came down with 9/11 lung
diseases & cancer was seriously mitigated. I never saw those Union clean up people wearing
respirators like they should have been, where was the important health advice from Union Stewards to
the rank & file, good job protecting your due payers guys!
