Scientists dispute politicians’ claims that global warming grew Sandy

Sandy soaked the East Coast -- but is global warming to blame?

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Mayor Mike Bloomberg told the country in no uncertain terms on Tuesday that devastating superstorm Sandy was clear proof of climate change.

'Anyone who says there's not a dramatic change in weather patterns, I think is denying reality,” Cuomo said in a press conference. "What is clear is that the storms that we've experienced in the last year or so, around this country and around the world, are much more severe than before," Bloomberg agreed.

But scientists say the evidence is far less concrete than the politicians appear to believe.

Martin Hoerling, a meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), said Sandy wasn’t boosted by global warming -- the storm merely revealed natural forces at work.

'Neither the frequency of tropical or extratropical cyclones over the North Atlantic are projected to appreciably change due to climate change.' - NOAA meteorologist Martin Hoerling

“Great events can have little causes,” he told the New York Times. “In this case, the immediate cause is most likely little more that the coincidental alignment of a tropical storm with an extratropical storm.”

Indeed, rather than fueling the storm, Hoerling stressed that climate change has little to no effect upon hurricanes.

Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist with Canada’s University of Victoria, agreed that climate change didn't make an ordinary storm extraordinary.

"The ingredients of this storm seem a little bit cooked by climate change, but the overall storm is difficult to attribute to global warming," Weaver told the Associated Press.

The return to the ancient gods of weather is apparent in the political comments. Not satisfied with science (which says it’s just two storms joining along the same front), they turn to an extra-scientific explanation called GLOBAL WARMING.

The media picks and chooses whatever furthers their cause.

There's something called "common sense" and it says....since hurricanes have always occurred...and they are all different....it has nothing "0" to do with any "man made" climate change.

It is mother nature doing what mother nature does....not climate change telling mother nature what to do.

And that's because Zero is Pres__ent. Mother Nature has been having a fit since the day he was elected.

If the moon was not full, the flood would have been averted. We must work together to bad full moons.

True enough, the flooding was largely the result of timing. If the storm had arrived at low tide there might still have been some flooding but nowhere near what they got.

I went through Hazel, Agnes, Isabelle, all major hurricanes.

Global warming had nothing to do with any of them

Leftists are humanists, which has the inherent assumption that every generation gets better, smarter, and more moral.

This inherent assumption leads them to disregard any lessons of the past, and thus they discard “common sense”.

The name for the Oct 29 full moon is “Hunter’s Moon”
I think it should be renamed to “Sailor’s Moon”

Oh, and when TS Irene hit us, It was a full moon also.

Ban full moons.

No one is saying BOO about High Tide....aka....the moon...not climate change at work....

TIME of LANDFALL would have made a huge difference.

"What is clear is that the storms that we've experienced in the last year or so, around this country and around the world, are much more severe than before,"

What is more severe is that there are more people in harms way to notice. How many experienced or remember the 1938 or 1821 storms?

As someone pointed out, if DumBO had kept his promise to lower the sea level this would not have been a severe storm.

No, it has nothing to do with global warming. Hurricane Sandy just ran into the northern winds. Those winds are always cold up north. And that explains why the cyclone starting producing alot of snow up in the northern states. Not to mention winter is right around the corner for most of us in the USA. However, NY should be thankful Sandy wasn’t a category 4 hurricane. Things could have been worse for NY

Hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, have no food, water, lights or heat and these two try to use the disaster to leverage their bogus “Global Warming” agenda.

But New Yorkers, who consider themselves quite sharp, keep electing political goofballs like Cuomo and Nanny Bloomers, so it must be the kind of leadership they are happy with.

True.

Back in 1821 and 1938 there were no skyscrapers, just brownstones and houses. Fireplaces and wood stoves were used for heat.

That’s very interesting! I had no idea the moon could affect hurricanes like that.

Understand that the moon doesn't effect the hurricane. It effects only the tides.

The hurricane only adds a storm surge on top of the tide.
