Debate answer on assault weapons ban could cause problems for Obama

President Obama may have been tossing a bone to his base, but one answer in the second presidential debate could come back to haunt him with a key voter group -- gun owners.

When asked what the administration has done or plans to do to limit assault weapons at the Oct. 16 debate, Obama said part of the solution to gun violence "is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced." That comment caught fire with gun owners.

"If there are undecided voters who put the Second Amendment as their first issue, then certainly the president's remark about bringing back any type of gun ban is going to chase away those voters," said Joe Eaton, a regional coordinator with the Buckeye Firearms Association in Ohio.

One of those is independent voter Robert Brewer from Cincinnati.

When he heard the president's renewed support for an assault weapons ban, Brewer said, "I was thinking I was born in a country (where) I had a right to keep and bear arms and I don't know what he's talking about. It goes against the Constitution, which gives me the right to keep and bear arms and that right shall not be infringed."

Pro-gun activists never considered President Obama an ally, after he campaigned in favor of such a gun ban in 2008.

--snip--

In the second debate, Obama said: "I also share your belief that weapons that were designed for soldiers in war theatres don't belong on our streets." He added, "What I want is a comprehensive strategy, part of it is seeing if we get automatic weapons that kill folks in amazing numbers out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill."...

I never read or heard of that phrase before, i.e. war theatre. It was always theater or theaters of war. It reminds of navy corpse men. It's like English is his second language.

P.S. Theater is spelled both ways.

Hopefully the NRA and others are running ads in these battleground states highlighting Obama’s admissions in the second debate about his desire to institute new gun controls. That is a message that resonates with a large percentage of the electorate.

Can’t affored to leave any votes on the table.

The President has already said he will have more latitude after his reelection.

After that comment the NRA is putting out ads in some states. I made a contribution to them as in some of those swing states even the libs cling bitterly to their guns.

Joe Eaton is a moron.

The set of people who are primarily focused on 2nd Amendment rights and who were undecided is null.

The Constitution doesn’t “give” rights.

Yes the semi rifle owners in his base will totally swing the election. This is series, seriesly.

The Constitution doesn’t “give” rights.

You of course are correct - these "rights" are from God.

What conservatives know is that the Constitution doesn't grant us one right. It protects those rights granted by God.

And no, the Militia did not limit those rights.

"the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

You would be surprised at the number of Democrats who own guns. Particularly in rural areas. I think Obama has lost a lot of white Democrats who were only Democrat because they were union -- particularly in coal country.

I doubt if there were few, if any, gun owners, other than his bros in the hood, who were 0bama supporters anyway. It has been common knowledge that aside from hating The Constitution as a whole, Barry Benghazi hates the Second Amendment. Gun owners might stand in his way for plans to establish the Caliphate of the United Socialist States of Amerika.

Yep, I’ve never known a Democrat to be so concerned with the constitution (2nd amendment or whichever you pick) to vote against their party. If they were ever so bothered they would have switched parties. I’ve seen the switch, never the stay and vote against the party line.

Yesterday Obamuzzie listed “linesmen” in his list of folks helping in Sandy recovery. I assumed he thinks they work for the “electric corpse”. But this all helps explain my whole plan for this election. I’ve sent half of my available money to Romney and the NRA. If Romney wins I’ll send them the other half ‘cause I know they’ll need it to help clean up the post election mess. If Obamuzzie wins I’ll spend the money on ammunition since I’m pretty sure that will be the next thing I need.

I know a lot of gun owners. I have yet to hear of one who would even consider voting for Obama. How could this "haunt" him?
