It was a tough storm that, despite dire warnings early on to BE PREPARED still took people by surprise. This family got caught, and the woman made not just one, but a whole series of mistakes, considering other posts from the area. She paid a high price. I cannot fault the home owners, however.

My thoughts and prayers are with all those suffering up there.

Having never been thru the horror that she has, I'm in no position to cast my judgment on this poor woman. She has lost her two children and the only words that should be spoken are words of prayer.......

I never cease to be amazed at the callousness of many alleged Christians on this site.

Nobody does high dudgeon over imperfection in Christians better than the irreligious, too, even on FR. It’s a dysfunctional dance. A small number of all-too-human Christians failing to behave in a Christian manner, and nobelievers tut-tutting theatrically over it, presumably for validation of themselves but there’s also an element of attempted discrediting, I’ve come to understand after almost eight years here.

It takes all kinds, and not every screen name actually is what that individual purports to be online. And, nobody’s perfect.

There were many warnings about the potential of this storm but if this woman would have followed some of the posts here, the day before Sandy hit, she might have been under the impression it was all nothing but hype and a lie and wasn’t going to be anything more that a stiff breeze and a little rain, a vast conspiracy to distract us from Benghazi all orchestrated by Obama with every weather forecaster taking their marching orders to make the storm out to be bigger and worse than it was. < : (

To be honest, a lot of people were not prepared in this part of the country because this was a very unusual event, something most people in the NE have never seen or experienced in their lifetimes. The warnings of storm surge and flooding, hurricane force winds; sadly a lot didn’t either really understand what that really meant; “that’s something that happens in the Gulf Coast or in Florida, that just doesn’t happen here, I don’t live right on the beach so I don’t need to worry” or given the forecasts that have been wrong in the past, probably did think it wouldn’t be all that bad.

I never cease to be amazed at the callousness of many alleged Christians on this site…..You are being kind.... they are hypocrites.

Agreed. Sometimes people in a sudden life or death situation, in hindsight do, some really incredibly stupid things. But it’s not because they are callous, selfish or stupid, but because they simply panic. My heart goes out to this family, even if she acted stupidly, that doesn't mitigate or minimize the loss of two beautiful innocent childre. And if I’d been that home owner who turned her away, I don’t know how I’d feel. Given the situation, I can’t say I blame him but in hindsight, I’d probably be wishing I’d have done something.

There were a number of people here in PA last year during the flooding after Irene/Lee that got stuck or their cars washed away while trying to cross flooded roadways and there were several deaths. No matter how often the police say, “Do not attempt to cross a flooded road”, a number of people look at it and think; “It doesn’t look all that deep, I can get across it” not understanding the tremendous force of fast moving water.

“Suspicious” is a word that floated across my mind too. Very strange behavior.

She had already abandoned her kids and was alone when she tried to break into the guy’s house. If she had been trying to break into my house, in the middle of a storm when no 911 response w as available, then I would probably shot her dead.

I asked for prayers for the lady, not criticism of her decisions, whatever they may have been.

If you can't offer that little bit of compassion then respond to someone else

My one prayer is that this lady never gets to read the comments on this thread.........

Not at all. She did a bunch of stupid things, mistakes exploited by "Mother" Nature's impassive ferocity and changed her story to make herself look better. And while it's evidence of a flawed character, it's not an uncommon phenomenon. How do you explain to your loved ones that your mistakes were the primary cause of your children's deaths?

For those here who have been in situations, even the best plans don't survive events. Less than the best plans may have worse outcomes. Before we judge anyone, keep in mind that we weren't there, and I seriously doubt this woman had ever dealt with a situation remotely close to what she found herself dealing with. Most people's normalcy bias will cause them to evaluate a situation in a way which may not reflect the nature of events, even as those events are happening.

Similarly, in the storm, someone in a house full of people may not have heard her at the door, or may have suspected a robbery attempt if they did.

I will only offer my prayers for all involved, especially the boys and their parents. Those little guys looked as if they were well cared for and loved. Their parents must be going through unthinkable misery.

At this point, shoulda, coulda, woulda don't count, except for prior planning for someone else's 'next time'.
