Richard Mourdock--the Indiana Republican Senate candidate who sparked a controversy during a debate last month when he said he opposes abortion even in the case of rape because "it is something that God intended to happen"--is now trailing Democrat Joe Donnelly by 11 points, a new state poll shows. According to the Howey/DePauw Indiana Battleground Poll released on Friday, Donnelly leads Mourdock 47 percent to 36 percent among likely voters.

I live in Virginia.

No poll calls at all.

I only have a cellphone and it still has a Maryland area code.

Without weighting EVERY poll in 2008 would have shown McCain up 10% - you simply have to weight for the fact that younger people are harder to contact and less likely to respond.

One reason the polls are all over the place is everyone is doing that differently, of course.

But it’s unbelievably naive to demand that no weighting be done.

lots of things change in 4 years ~ the response rates are so low that the results are too fragile to work with ~ plus, small groups can subvert the poll by simply always answering every phone call.

Accept it, the polls are garbage weighted or unweighted, and, after weighting, they aren't even random.

This method of determining public opinion has expired!

I can’t believe that people here are stupid enough to buy that “poll”. Seriously? Are you all THAT easy?

Mourdock’s statement actually plays well here in Indiana. We understand. Don’t worry, he’ll take the race by at least 5 points.

I’m not buying the five points claim; but I think it’s now an even race, as opposed to the Democrat leading. Gonna need to get the masses out and drag Mourdock across the finish line here.

You are probably right on. We need to fill the seats to take control of the Senate. But what have we, if the “quality” of our members is subpar? Will they be obstructionists who don’t see the bigger picture and hang things up because of some strange belief system? I guess, at this juncture, we haven’t a choice. Just hope they win and then are manageable. A free society survives if we have quality leadership. Unfortunately, in a lot of cases, the person who should have run didn’t even get in the race. I call it the Real Estate Developer/Ambulance Chasing Lawyer Syndrome. That seems to be what we end up on our Town Council. They run, not because they want to do something positive for the town, but rather so that they can line their pockets.

“The “dumb sh!ts” believe this poll.”

Mourdock is not leading in any poll I’ve seen since he let us in on his views on women and abortion. Agreed, this poll is probably an outlier, but show me one where he is substantially ahead. I’d like to be comforted that there is hope.

I live in Marion County and have Mourdock...Mike &...May signs in my front yard. Two doors down is an Obama sign. No other signs on the block. (excuse if spelling incorrect. Free Republic spell check weird since changing settings. I am going back to my old settings. Speed has not changed.)

Sure he is

"The poll of 800 likely Indiana voters was conducted Oct. 28-30 and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.

Mr. Mourdock's campaign countered Friday morning by releasing its own internal numbers from pollster John McLaughlin showing him ahead by 2 points, 46 percent to 44 percent."

Are these two religious nuts?

They're conservatives. You should try it. It's the reason we're all here.

“They’re conservatives. You should try it. It’s the reason we’re all here.”

I am a conservative for all of my 72 years. And I have learned in that time that there is a looney Right, just like there’s a looney Left. Solid Conservatives would not harm their electoral chances with making statements like Mourdock and Akin did. I am just looking for a reason for their actions. I thought maybe, since one of the posters mentioned that these men were “religious” that perhaps their religious beliefs led them to the statements they made. Just what drove them to these utterances is all I am interested in knowing, and neither of them has satisfactorily explained why they did it.

RE: Ambush questions from the Democrat “mainstream” newsrooms about abortion

Here is your answer. Study it. Memorize it. Get a brain.

“As it stands now, abortion is a Constitutionally guaranteed right in this country. I disagree with the court’s 1973 Roe v Wade decision, but there it is. There have been no significant votes in the Senate (or the House) directly pertaining to abortion other than attempting to ban the gruesome practice of “partial birth” abortion, and I anticipate no votes on abortion anytime in the near future because the issue is currently settled law and will stay that way unless the Supreme Court reverses itself.

“For this reason I won’t waste my time, or yours, on speculative ‘what if’ questions about abortion. Let’s talk instead about the things I CAN vote on... Let’s talk instead about how we can roll back the socialist welfare state, repair the economy, get people back to work, and restore America.”

It must be nice in your world where nobody ever makes a mistake or says something they wish they hadn't said in the way they said it. You want an explanation? Are you a simpleton? They said what they said because they are simply not the silver tongued, practiced liars that most Democrats are. Now, why not just shut up and give these solid conservative candidates the support they deserve?

And by the way, your use of the phrase "looney Right" has my spidey sense tingling. Scumbag Democrats use that phrase to describe people who take the US Constitution seriously. What do you mean by it?

Donnelly will win. I’m good friends with a Lugar staffer and many of their supporters, like it or not, are with Donnelly. Many people think he’s conservative enough and doesn’t freak them out like Murdock does.

Indiana is a conservative state, but it is not so far to the right that they are going to except some of what Murdock said and stood for, especially when Donnelly is conservative enough for them.

I lived in Indiana for some time, went to grad school at IU. Everything I’m hearing is Donnelly is going to win because many Lugar supporters are not happy with Murdoch. Just the way it is.

Wow, this is way off. He’ll probably lose, but the margin will be much closer than this. Thanks deek69.

In my Hoosier circles (decidedly right of center), Mourdock isn’t disliked because of the substance of his views, but more because of his inability to express those views in anything approaching an articulate or civl manner.
