Harvey Milk Plaza removes benches
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | November 2, 2012 | by Vivian Ho

The purple benches at San Francisco's Harvey Milk Plaza were removed Friday following growing complaint that they had become a loophole for drunks and others to avoid the city's ordinance prohibiting sitting or lying on walkways.

The removal decision was made earlier this week by the Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District, the community group that paid $40,000 to install the benches in 2010.

"It's about time," said Dan Glazer, owner of the nearby bakeshop Hot Cookie. "They pee, they defecate and they leave their garbage there. They have no respect for the plaza or for Harvey Milk and what he meant to our community."

But Hot Cookie employee Dylan Burditt disagreed.

"Generally, they're around, but that's just San Francisco," he said. "I think it's a drastic choice. Just because certain people are complaining, everybody else has to suffer (without benches)."

Jane Haggerstone, an employee at Sunday's Tanning Salon across from the plaza, echoed that sentiment.

"It's a shame because a lot of people have to wait for the buses and it would be nice for them to sit," she said.

Isn't this pretty much the textbook definition of "reaping what they have sown"?

It sounds to me like they are honoring Harvey Milk exactly the way he deserves to be honored.

I saw San Francisco for the first time in the early 60’s as a kid. It was a beautiful place. It ia a big trash heap now.

San Francisco in the 50’s and early 60’s was a beautiful refined city. I grew up there and then. I miss it.

And the hypocrisy of the left marches on!
‘just because someone complained, spoiled it for all of us’
paraphrasing here - oh man, is that not exactly what these
idiots have been doing for decades?? Takes one flippin
loon to complain about something decent and conservative and
it turns into a ‘movement’. I’m sick to death of the
pc crap.

And yes, SF is a pit. Lived there over 10 years and left in the 90’s. Went back ONCE and that was enough. I weep for what they’ve done to such a beautiful city.

It’s been a long time since I was there but the last time, people would aggressively and shamelessly ask you straight to your face for your used cable car ticket that you paid for to try to bum free rides. Sounds like something their oh-so-tolerant leftie government would support. I remember also how they would annoy and get in the face of and aggressively panhandle a captive audience, i.e., folks in line to ride the cable cars.

No kidding! The whole Harvey Milk legacy is hilarious by itself, now the benches are being removed because the park attracts smelly homeless bums. You can’t write this comedy any better ;D!

I love that you are calling it Frisco. Having lived in the area for a while, I know locals get all persnickety when you do that.

Have to go there next week for business. I think I’ll do that several times to see how many people I can get frothing at the mouth.

Yes, indeed. The Friscans just HATE it when you call it "Frisco".

If my understanding of the local history is correct (corrections invited) back in the days of the gold rush, and even into the mid-1900s, Frisco was not a pejorative. The best I can figure, it was a book by Herb Caen titled "Don't Call it Frisco" that drummed up all the fake prideful insistence on not calling Frisco Frisco.

Be careful, BTW, as the Friscans might take reprisals on your joking with them. (And, don't bring nice shoes, but you knew that.)
