...and don’t forget that the Catholic Church persecuted Galileo for agreeing with Copernicus...

Copernicus dedicated his book, On the Revolution of the Celestial Orbs, in which he gives an excellent account of heliocentricity, to Pope Paul III. His research was funded by a bishop.

Obviously, the Church didn't oppose the theory of heliocentrism per se, unlike the Lutherans. What the Church opposed was Galileo's demand that the Church teach heliocentrism as dogma. Otherwise the Church would have opposed Copernicus.

Ironically, while Galileo was right about heliocentrism, his science was flawed, and didn't prove his theory.

I’m not sure what indulgences sold for at that time, but I bet Urban purchased a few.

"Selling" of indulgences was always an abuse. Indulgences that involved almsgiving ended in 1567, the year before Urban was born.

But let's see... now you've brought up:

You seem content to beat the Church with whatever stick is easiest to grab. If that's all you're going to do, I don't have time to deal with you.

Why do liberals get away with substituting the word “felt” for “thought”?

Liberals emote, they do not think.

You get an A+ in parroting revisionist history and an F in telling the truth.

I'd wager that you went to public school, are on the public dole and will actually vote for Soetoro.

Did you bother to read the entire article, which the Fox story provides a link to, or are you simply engaging in the lazy FR tradition of posting without reading?

Galileo, naive as he was, went out of his way not to offend.

You are an idiot.

Agreed, it would be like the political chainsaw massacre if he were around.

Hey, there’s something vaguely unsettling about the phrase “gay marriage stance”; luckily — I can’t put my finger on it! Oh! Ohhhhhhh!

I attended Catholic school (and was an altar boy back when the Mass was still said in Latin although I am an agnostic now). I have never, and will never, take any welfare. I won't be voting for Barry...but thanks for your kind words. You can take the money you would have wagered and send it to FreeRepublic. Be well.

I'm a Eucharistic minister, and as two of us went up to receive he whispered to the guy next to me (who has made it known he is voting for Obama)” Listen to your Catholic Faith when you go in to vote on Tuesday”
