Poll suggests presidential race is tightening in Maine
Press Herald ^

Mitt Romney has cut President Obama's lead in half among Maine voters, although Obama still holds a tough-to-overcome 7-percentage-point advantage, according to a poll conducted last week for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram.

Obama leads the Republican nominee 49 percent to 42 percent in the statewide telephone survey conducted Tuesday and Wednesday by Portland-based Critical Insights. In mid-September -- before the presidential debates sparked enthusiasm for Romney -- Obama led by 16 points.

The race is now close enough in Maine that Romney is winning among men voters for the first time, the poll shows. Strong support among women is keeping Obama in the lead.

I've always been curious why Maine is not a solid Republican state. The people up there seem to be of a hardy sort, self-reliant, tough, and they never bitch and complain about the constant snowstorms in winter and the mosquitoes/black flies in summer (all six weeks of it).

Ditto for Vermont. I don't get it.

Maine would be a solid Republican state but for the social issues. One of two states that never voted for FDR.

No idea. My Dad was from Van Buren in Aristook County. He grew up in a large family of self reliant people and never voted for a dem his entire life. If he were alive today, he would be disgusted at this parasite in the oval office.

Real Mainers wear Carhartt.
When you see some joker in a cable knit sweater with J Crew Shorts on, that’s a Masshole.

I don't know what's up with Maine.

Massholes moving in over the years?

Farmers wanting gov't handouts?

Small industrial/logging towns with heavy Union participation?

And again the big story here too is that ZerO is under 50%. Do I detect a pattern?

Maine is nearly Lilly White, and wholesome.. If they had to tolerate the riffraff, the permanent taker class can inflict on the population, they would be an ice cold Mississippi..

I know what this sounds like.. Whatever!.. I report you decide.. LOL

This, along with close races in NH, MN and OR is pointing to one conclusion.

"Ditto for Vermont. I don't get it."

I thought that VT got overrun by NYC folks starting in the 60's.

Maine began to trend blue because of the influx of Québécois in the first half of the 20th century. They were typically mill workers, and they’ve always had a stick up their a$$es over the Anglos, whom they saw as looking down on them for their different language and religion. (Sound familiar, Texas?) Their children and grandchildren are now ardent Democrats, even if they never had to work in a mill. My family broke that cycle, but our grandfather worked for himself as a house painter. Add to this that Maine has become a welfare haven and you can see how the blue stuck. I left after college 20 years ago and can never imagine living there again. They have sacrificed a unique individualism for government control. Don’t be surprised if they vote to approve gay marriage.

the heavily populated 2 southern counties are heavily DEM ... just eastern suburbanites and MASS transplants who like the chic coastal towns. Most of the counties are strong Republican .... but sparsely populated.

Maybe there is the anti-war, anti-big government types who identify the GOP with “the military-industrial complex” bit.

winnah winnah chicken dinnah!

Maine went being populated by flinty independents to welfare moms with 4 kids by three different men in a double wide. Add in the all the lawyers in Portland and a few greenie weenie Masshole trust funders and the state was sunk. Besides, you still can’t eat scenery....

Obama won the state by 17.3% in 2008 so this is a good sign of his decline.
