Todd Akin draws closer to Claire McCaskill in Missouri Senate poll (McCaskill Only +2)

ST. LOUIS • Congressman Todd Akin has dramatically narrowed the lead of Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri’s nationally watched Senate race, according to a new poll.

But the poll — commissioned by the Post-Dispatch, News 4 and the Kansas City Star — also indicates that Akin’s “legitimate rape” comment in August continues to affect the race. McCaskill still enjoys a significant gender gap, and three-quarters of her supporters call Akin’s comment “somewhat” or “very” important to their decision.

The results show McCaskill leading with 45 percentage points to Akin’s 43 points among likely voters. That’s within the poll’s 4-point margin for error, indicating a closer race than two earlier independent polls that showed McCaskill with wider leads.

Brad Coker, of Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, Inc., of Washington, D.C., said the battle over economic issues between President Barack Obama and GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney could have helped tighten Missouri’s Senate race.

We live in SW MO and 3-4 years ago we quit taking the Springfield-News Leader. You know life went on unchanged and we haven’t missed that ratty liberal rag. The Post Dispatch is another ratty liberal gem. You know we will never be able to get decent unbiased journalism until all these liberal rags are tossed. The only way to have that happen is to quit buying the newspapers. You can get the cartoons on the computer along with any other newspaper you want. You don’t need a hard copy. For what reason? These liberal newspapers aren’t even good for the bird cage.

Missouri could be decided by Romney’s coattails. A state that befuddles me is Indiana which is strongly Romney, but in the Senate the Democrat leads by 3.

Rasmussen’s state numbers in Missouri are way out of date. He has Ohio senate tied, but the Republican was hurt by a generally republican paper, the Cincy Enquirer, coming out against him because “he isn’t ready.” It’s true that he’s young, but Sherrod Brown is the most reliable liberal vote in the Senate.

Romney will have to work with a democratic Senate. Depending on your view of Romney that is thought-provoking.
