Are coal stocks predicting a Romney win?

Commentary: A look at favored sectors is a piece of the puzzle

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Using each candidate’s focus industries, we can glean clues as to whom the market thinks is going to win

While trading sites such as Intrade allow traders to place actual money bets on which candidate will win the presidency for the next four years, public opinion is also manifested in the stock market. There are probably as many ways to analyze what the stock market thinks as there are analysts, but my favorite is looking at each candidate’s favorite initiatives.

To be clear, I am not going to predict a winner. Take the following analysis as one piece of a very complex prognostication puzzle.

With Governor Romney, we know what he favors. From the Keystone pipeline to his debate quote, “I like coal,” it is clear that one of his focuses will be on energy and coal in particular. Let’s start there.

Many analysts look at the Market Vectors Coal exchange-traded fund KOL +1.24% as the representative for the industry, but 60% of its value comes from foreign stocks. For the purposes of determining what the U.S. stock market thinks about possible energy policy after the election, I prefer the Dow Jones US Coal Index, which unfortunately cannot be bought or sold directly.

I bought coal this morning. I figure it Romney wins, I could get a quick boost. If hussein wins, it's all over anyway.

I really appreciate what Romney has been saying on the stump about using more coal and domestic energy and allowing (promoting too) more drilling and exploration on federal lands.

I have seen two recent stump speeches on TV and was very impressed with Romney putting energy first in his jobs creation program. Plus he has a very good speaking style now, I wonder if he got some coaching (finally). He speaks in a light and positive way to bring in the babes. A bit breezy too.

I am staying with what I have till this is decided....I think it could over quickly.

Obummers early voting is down significantly...that was key for him in 2008.

This morning a talking head on the radio said that while Wall Street wanted Romney to win, they had priced an Obama victory into the market.

Who knows what to believe?

The four largest producers of coal as of 2010 are:

Wyoming (442,522 short tons, 3 Electoral votes)

West Virginia (135,220 ST, 8 EV) and Kentucky (104,960 ST, 5 EV)

Pennsylvania (58,593 ST, 21 EV).

In 2008, WY, WV, KY voted for McCain/Palin. PA voted for Beelzebub/Molech. The 2008 B/M vote in PA was concentrated in the east, not in the PA coal country.

FWIW.

I bought Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) last Friday. I think it’s movement predicts a Romney win.

Well. Another six hours or so, we might have a pretty good idea as if the stock purchases where a good idea or not.
I just returned from voting. Small lines. Perhaps I picked a good time to go.

Just talked to my son on some of the propositions on the ballot out her ....From 30 to 40 numerals...think that is 11 of them...they Dems are always weasel wording them...so you have to be careful.

We think three of them deserve a yes vote.

For US Senator,....Feinstine would not even do a debate....down with that nonsense.

Rohrbacher gets a yes vote ....

After that I am following the R's.

Got a 10 minute walk over to the club house....be back later.
