Businesses and individuals get tired of being viewed mainly as an ATM machine for government.

By STEVEN GREENHUT

For the Register letters@ocregister.com

SACRAMENTO – Not long ago, I made a case for staying in California, arguing that there's nothing wrong here that isn't fixable.

California, blessed by magnificent and varied geography, mild weather and an "anything's possible" culture, suffers mainly from a political process controlled by public-sector union advocates hell-bent on protecting their power and privilege, no matter what that means for the state's finances and public services.

While affirming this "we should stand our ground" point of view, I've found little to be hopeful about in the current political season, with polls showing Gov. Jerry Brown's tax-increase plan (Proposition 30) holding a solid lead, an initiative that would chip away at union power (Prop. 32) failing, and President Barack Obama holding a 24-point lead in California. These three examples are not surprising, but they do suggest how far we are from the paradigm shift needed to get California back on a better track.

The most troubling thing I've seen is the delusion embraced by the state's dominant Democrats, who really seem to believe that California is only one massive tax increase away from being fixed.

"Maybe I know too much about this stuff, but we're in a recovery, a slow recovery, and it'll keep recovering with any luck," Gov. Jerry Brown said in early September. "And if the Republicans would get out of the way and let, you know, the stimulus and the investment go forward, such as the Democrats have proposed, we'll be better off."

I’m in VA and am terrified at how blue we are becoming with the unabated growth of federal government in the north of the state. I am looking to move to a very red state as well. We should all try to choose one where we can live close to other conservative. At least when things go south we will have each other and not be at the mercy of rioters and looters.

...to score dope in Colorado.

* Actually I doubt that there will be pot sales in Colorado but as an issue, it sure gets certain segments of the population to go to the polls. That trick only works once though if the initiative passes.

And while you may be able to legally buy/use it, any employer can deny you employment for using it. There are employers that already prohibit tobacco use even off premises/after hours. Dopers were too focused on their own vice while condemning tobacco and alchy-haul.

Folks that dismiss California because they think it could never happen in their state, are in for a rude awakening.

It just happened to the nation.

Left 9 years ago. The graffiti was getting closer to our neighborhood and bars were showing up on windows only a couple of miles away. Property values were high then and we haven’t looked back. We visited once and wondered how we ever lived in that mess.

But dope doesn't have all of the bad carcinogens that cigarettes have. Its good for you! Dude! /double sarc

Funny how they are talking about banning cigarettes even in your home but it is perfectly fine to light up a doobie. Gee, what about second hand smoke?

I live in Colorado and I was completely blown away by this passing.

If Texas said they were pulling out tonight, I’d have my pick-up loaded and be heading east out of Arizona by sunrise...

Are they going to “tax the hell out of it” so the ATMF can come busting in your door with armed agents for growing your own without paying the high taxes?

I live in San Felipe, Baja MX, 117 miles south of Calexico, CA. Very safe, one road in one road out, military check points each way. Very comfortable living, once you pay for your house, any thing from $40,00 to $550,000, living expenses are about $1,800.00, per month total and that is living very well.

Tool had it right. The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.

Left CA with my job for Utah almost 10 years ago now.

Idaho is actually a good choice. It is the stern of the Titanic. It will sink last. But with any luck it will break off first and stay afloat.

Last night destroyed my dream of retiring to Virginia. I had set my dreams on retiring to Lexington or Winchester or Blacksburg. Not now.

I already live in a red county in the blue state of California. There is no point in my moving to a red county in the blue state of Virginia. I know it is only becoming purple now, but it is on its way to solid blue.

So I’m now looking at eastern Tennessee.

“Running out of places to move I’m afraid.”

Too true FRiend. My wife is eyeballing Toronto.

I’m damn near willing, yet this is where my loyalties lie.
