Puerto Rico wants to become the 51st state of the US
BBC News ^ | The Day After | 7 November 2012

Posted on 11/07/2012 6:39:20 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

Voters in Puerto Rico have supported a non-binding referendum to become a full US state.

The measure will require approval from the US Congress, but President Barack Obama has said he will respect the vote.

The island is currently a US territory, which uses the dollar and whose citizens travel on US passports.

But it does not return senators to the US Congress and is represented in Washington by a non-voting delegate.

Almost 80% of the island's electorate took part in the referendum, the fourth in the past 45 years.

With almost all the votes counted, almost 54% voted to change the island's relationship with the US.

And in reply to a second question on what future they favoured, nearly two-thirds wanted full statehood.

If Congress grants its approval, Puerto Ricans would have the right to vote in all US elections, but would also have to pay federal taxes, something at present they are excused from.

Great. Now it's just a matter of figuring out how to collect income taxes on dope using and dealing, and cock fighting.

If I am not mistaken, they voted for statehood once before. I think that Congress voted against it though.

The theory bing, what House member wants to lose their seat, because the constitution calls for a mandatory 435 House seats. The moment Pourto Rico becomes a state, the country must be redistricted to allow for the new increase of population and allow Pourto Rico to have it’s share of Congressmen.

Considering the size of their population they would get about 5 members. Which Congressmen are willing to vote against their own interest? Remember, we are talking about politicians here. One thing they all have in common is they are narcicistic to a point.

So pourto Rico can continue voting for statehood, and they will continue getting denmied by Congress.

Now, let’s say they get statehood, would Obama want to start campaigning for 6 more so he can then claim was actually phsycic when he stated that he campaigned in all 57 states back in 2008?

That would solve Texas’ immigration problems and they could keep the liberals from overrunning the state too!

Don’t know how to post a link but Glenn had this figured out 2 years ago. I remember the vote because Tom Cole voted for it and sent me a letter after I ask him to vote against it telling I just didn’t have enough knowledge on the subject, One of many timed he has proved to be a real disappointment for Oklahoma.

There are many of us who are Conservatives, and many more who have served this country honorably in the military.

Puerto Ricans server in the US military at a rate far greater than any other group in this country. I have had the honor of working with many of these fine veterans. Once they start paying taxes, they'll become more conservative.

Not all Hispanics are the same, and bottom line is this, if we don't teach them about the superiority of Conservativism, our side will NEVER win again. Simple demographic fact. So stop Hatin, and start educatin.

Once they start paying taxes, they'll become more conservative.

I'm not so sure about that; voting Hispanics went 71 percent for Obozo. The Dimocrats (and a few Republicans) have done a good job of painting conservatives as anti-immigration. Once that label sticks, it's tough to get rid of.

“Puerto Rico has a Republican gov. The one thing I dislike about FR is the constant bashing of Hispanics. There are many of us who are Conservatives, and many more who have served this country honorably in the military.”

Please don't think that the reactions you see are based on ethnicity. Although I can only speak for myself, I believe that most conservatives, and indeed the absolutely overwhelming majority of white Americans have no anti-Hispanic bias. If people on this board thought that Puerto Rico would be a conservative state, and vote with conservatives, they would overwhelmingly be pushing for statehood. People are just scared about further liberal demographic shifts that basically make their own vote nationally irrelevant.

I propose that actual tax payers, free loaders not included, from the current 50 states vote on the status of Puerto Rico. I pretty confident independence would win in this scenario.

After all is said and done, I believe in following the US Constitution.

art iv

Section. 3. New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be so construed as to Prejudice any Claims of the United States, or of any particular State.

Puerto Rico is territory of the US. Therefore, Congress gets to decide what to do with it. The official head of state of Puerto Rico is the president of the US. Important to me is that since the US acquired Puerto Rico after the Spanish War, that Puerto Ricans were required to participate in the US draft in any war. They were, therefore, draftees in every draftee war starting with WWII.

There is no denying that they are a strategic piece of property in the Carribbean. Personally, I wish we'd kept Panama. Having spent some time in Puerto Rico during my military career, I think it is an awesome island. Having been to both Hawaii and Puerto Rico, I prefer PR. I've no doubt it's a valuable piece of real estate.

They have voted to be included into the US. I think it is the right thing to do to have them become our 51st state.

I also wish General Hull hadn't been such an incompetent in 1812, and that we hadn't given back any defeated North American land south of the border after we'd taken it.

In the annexation of Texas there was a provision that Texas could, when it wanted, separate into as many as 5 states. At least 4 of those would currently be conservative, and with a bit of Gerrymandering, Austin could be perhaps be coupled with enough regular people to balance it.

Of course it would be interesting if the re-admission of Texas after the War of the Rebellion would make that provision of the annexation of Texas null and void, or not.
I think East Texas, North Texas, West Texas, and South Texas would be good names, and perhaps Austin. Then there would be only two more to go....

In PR they have no vote for President, VP, or Senators, and a non voting delegate in the House, and they pay no Federal income tax. In Washington, DC they have a vote for President and VP, but no vote for Senators, and a non voting delegate in the House, and they pay 100% Federal income tax. Is that fair? They should only have to pay 2/5ths Federal income tax in DC until they have Statehood along with PR, or at least full voting status.

The fully taxed but only partially represented people of Washington, DC would also like to become a state. With two stars, a flattened triangle with the 2 stars could be placed at the end of the blue field. I think that solution was done once before.

The Republicans are anti-Hispanic I don’t get it... just because they prefer to enforce the rule of law regarding illegal immigration? Hmm. I don’t see that as against Hispanic I just see it as them wanting ALL ethnicities to reside here LEGALLY. What is so hard to understand about that? Furthermore, George Bush was a Republican and he was VERY pro-Hispanic. I think the problem is that the Hispanics don’t just want fair and equal...they want to have “special” priviledges. Why? I don’t know. Because we are neighbors? Because they think they belong in this land, that whites stole parts of it from them? I abhor when a special interest group of people try to shut down a legitimate argument with that ol’ “well, you’re racist” or “You just don’t like (insert nationality).”

What should insult law abiding Americans of Latino descent is this whole Dem liberal mantra that all Hispanics are in favor of illegal immigration. It’s patronizing and insulting but typical of the lefts view of people by category...skin pigment, genitalia, age.

Illegal immigration is not even in the top 5 concerns.

Saying all Hispanic Americans are in favor of open borders and illegal immigration is like saying:

All white men are in favor of insider trading and bank fraud.

All blacks are in favor of blood and crip gang violence.

It’s demeaning.

If they can get rid of the Republican majority of the House in 2014, we will see statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C. Perhaps even the Virgin Islands.

Of course, the position of the Left has long been to fight US jurisdiction over the Island, viewing it as passing possession from one colonial power (Spain) to another (the US). It was not so long ago there were Puerto Rican terrorist groups conducting bombings in the United States. Recall Clinton’s pardoning of the FALN terrorists.

But where there is an opportunity to enlist allies in their race and class warfare within the US, the position of the Left is reversed, and I expect they will push PR statehood when they have full control of Congress.

By the way, having to come under the US tax code will be an advantage for the vast majority of Puerto Ricans after the Obamacrats get done with the tax code. (Indeed, it likely would be even now with the refundable tax credits paid out under the current system.)

The tax code will be used to administer a “guaranteed income” system if the Left gets their way, and most Puerto Ricans would be on the receiving end under an Obama tax code.

What I hate about hispanics is their constant voting for leftists..with few exceptions

and their illegitimacy rates

and crime

and that over half that have been here 20 years are on some sort of dole

and that those vote anti white but I'm supposed to excuse them?

I'm sick of it...making excuses for them got us here

because they were non white mostly ...we looked the other way

meanwhile...Cubans...who do vote our way and know a thing or two about liberty have been left out to drown literally in the Gulf Stream while we give over our nation to left voting Amerindian illegals and legals who think our nation is one big crime against them and stole their land

I am tired of excusing...I am losing the land my forefather built...not your’s unless you are a Seguin...you can claim to be anyone i guess

I will not excuse the 70-80% because you are a nice guy sorry

but stupid Pollyanna freepers will...don't worry and they will pander to you on their knees

and they are just as big a reason we are lost as the bad Mexicans are

I recognize you individually but will not look the other way anymore

Shooting war starts and folks better make sure they are lined up right...regardless of race.

Are you willing to turn against 80% of your DNA kinfolks?...don't laugh...I have been in civil wars as a kid...these are real questions

that is not a question i have to answer given my own peoples

and don't lecture me...I have two half latino daughters and I can assure you they know what time it is and are not asking for deference for latinos..see my homepage...and i lived in latin America off and on over a decade

they see the enemy

basically it's this.....just plain and simple hoss...this is who hates my country:

70% of those who call themselves Hispanic...they think I owe them something...most just got here...bastards

97% of blacks...lost cause

75% of Orientals...why ..it can only be race... they sure don't need the handout

70-90% of non Christians..irrelevant in numbers but not in influence but partially offset by some stalwarts on our side...see Mark Levin who said basically just what I am but more polite

90% single moms...worthless women...my taxes are their husband, their kids my responsibility and bane

Northern White Liberals in mandals with ugly women with hair under their arms from non Anglo ethnicity...another lost cause pretty much

this is it buddy...I warned folks here for 12 years that the demographics many here celebrated would kill us and it has

I hope ya’ll are happy.

My children and grandkids will likely make the ultimate sacrifice to try to save what's left down the road

I disgusted that at this juncture your first cry is don't pick on Hispanics

well..son...4 out of 5 deserve it...and not just for voting but for general cultural rot overall

if you can't handle it then that is just too damned bad

quit whining

I mean damn you epitomize what is wrong with the GOP today...Jeb Bush is waiting for your vote

Your identity or race matters to you and you ask for deference due to it. What about mine...White Southerner...been kicked around here since Lincoln was chasing Vampires...does mine count less then your's?

Actually I think not...quite the contrary to be candid. My people are the few stalwarts left...but ridiculed by the same GOP that gave us Romney and will pander to you if you have brownish skin and last name ends in a vowel

The inability to deal with anything minority...not just illegal Mexicans but anything...has destroyed us.

Could we cherry pick only Cubans, Nicaraguense, Salvadorans, Colombian supermodels, Chavez refugees...I wish but we didn't...we let in a big uneducated dependency class and they want their redress for everything from Azatlan to Taco Bell slurs

well screw em...they are a clear and present danger and if the forum wants to go that way (again) then screw them too

we did this to ourselves which makes it all the more sickening and the fact that so many here still fail to see that and keep up the racial sameness and outreach platitudes in light of utter defeat is absolutely nauseating

In 1980 Magnus won with 54% of white vote...last night we lost with almost 60% of white vote and the reason is almost completely due to how the brown invasion..legal or illegal ...votes and why they vote that way...yet we the invaded and soon to be subjugated are the bad guys?

Kiss my butt...if non whites can't get the message about liberty and Constitutional government then I'm not gonna excuse them..I'm gonna fight them and call them for what they are

and calling me bigot quit bothering me decades ago when I shed my freedom rider youth..after realizing my unappreciated folly

but for the young..like my kids

and I will not shut up because they are not “white”

and I will blast white collaborators with a vengeance

and applaud those minorities who see the light

but I am not standing down

not any more

we are headed for a dark path...I have lived this before as a spectator on the ground and I come from a part of America once scorched with this sort of strife and grew reminded of it every day

freepers are for the most part kool aid drinkers...they better ditch that

issues like this...don;t settle easy...even with as low ebb a dominant culture as we now have

...if non whites can't get the message about liberty and Constitutional government then I'm not gonna excuse them..I'm gonna fight them and call them for what they are...

Keep on fighting the battle against political correctness (which sadly exists even here, occasionally, here on FR) and continue to state the TRUTH! Well said, wardaddy, yon nailed it. America would be far better off if there were millions upon millions like you. By the way, if anyone hasn't seen your "About" page, take a look. You have a beautiful, wonderful family and you are right to be very proud!

At the risk of getting zotted due to my too-brief tenure here, I think it's high time that whites start voting for their self-interest. The blacks and Mexicans are applauded by the media when they march in lock step formation. Yet, when white Christians form a political coalition, they are pilloried. Unless whites coalesce, America will go the way of South Africa and will face genocide. The white man and woman (particularly Southern Christian heterosexuals) are rapidly becoming an endangered species in Obama's dystopian America.

Many who come here are takers not makers...

You know who said something very similar on Dennis Prager's show on Wednesday...an Hispanic American caller.

He said, "Hispanics are inured toward corruption and ambition."

Prager went on to make the point that ambition comes in many forms...not just inventors which is the specific example that the caller went on to use.

I damn well am racist now and whoever doesn’t like it can KMA. I have been given good reason to be, the “minorities” won’t have it any other way, so I surrender. I am a racist.

This will seriously mess up the symetry of that field of stars on the flag.
