Voters in Puerto Rico have supported a non-binding referendum to become a full US state.
The measure will require approval from the US Congress, but President Barack Obama has said he will respect the vote.
The island is currently a US territory, which uses the dollar and whose citizens travel on US passports.
But it does not return senators to the US Congress and is represented in Washington by a non-voting delegate.
Almost 80% of the island's electorate took part in the referendum, the fourth in the past 45 years.
With almost all the votes counted, almost 54% voted to change the island's relationship with the US.
And in reply to a second question on what future they favoured, nearly two-thirds wanted full statehood.
If Congress grants its approval, Puerto Ricans would have the right to vote in all US elections, but would also have to pay federal taxes, something at present they are excused from.

I was in a Miami grocery store a few years ago. A customer was trying to talk to the obviously Hispanic sales clerk in Spanish. The clerk said, “speak English, you are in America.” Turns out the clerk was Puerto Rican.

I am wondering if Obama was referring to Puerto Rico, Washington, DC, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and maybe two others when he said 57. Are there two other territories or similar entities connected to the US?
They kicked out their Republican Gov. last night as well. This will be nothing more than a New Jersey floating in the Atlantic vote wise.
What should insult law abiding Americans of Latino descent is this whole Dem liberal mantra that all Hispanics are in favor of illegal immigration. It’s patronizing and insulting but typical of the lefts view of people by category...skin pigment, genitalia, age.
Illegal immigration is not even in the top 5 concerns.
Saying all Hispanic Americans are in favor of open borders and illegal immigration is like saying:
All white men are in favor of insider trading and bank fraud.
All blacks are in favor of blood and crip gang violence.
It’s demeaning.
The constitution does not limit the size of congress. Congress did that by a law and they can change it anytime they want to.

I realize they are already Americans and legal.
If they can get rid of the Republican majority of the House in 2014, we will see statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C. Perhaps even the Virgin Islands.
Of course, the position of the Left has long been to fight US jurisdiction over the Island, viewing it as passing possession from one colonial power (Spain) to another (the US). It was not so long ago there were Puerto Rican terrorist groups conducting bombings in the United States. Recall Clinton’s pardoning of the FALN terrorists.
But where there is an opportunity to enlist allies in their race and class warfare within the US, the position of the Left is reversed, and I expect they will push PR statehood when they have full control of Congress.
By the way, having to come under the US tax code will be an advantage for the vast majority of Puerto Ricans after the Obamacrats get done with the tax code. (Indeed, it likely would be even now with the refundable tax credits paid out under the current system.)
The tax code will be used to administer a “guaranteed income” system if the Left gets their way, and most Puerto Ricans would be on the receiving end under an Obama tax code.

At the risk of getting zotted due to my too-brief tenure here, I think it's high time that whites start voting for their self-interest. The blacks and Mexicans are applauded by the media when they march in lock step formation. Yet, when white Christians form a political coalition, they are pilloried. Unless whites coalesce, America will go the way of South Africa and will face genocide. The white man and woman (particularly Southern Christian heterosexuals) are rapidly becoming an endangered species in Obama's dystopian America.

You know who said something very similar on Dennis Prager's show on Wednesday...an Hispanic American caller.
He said, "Hispanics are inured toward corruption and ambition."
Prager went on to make the point that ambition comes in many forms...not just inventors which is the specific example that the caller went on to use.
