GOP must woo working people chasing American dream
The Washington Examiner ^ | September 8, 2012 | Timothy P. Carney

Posted on 11/08/2012 2:37:32 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Republicans need a new coalition and a new message. The heart of that coalition should be the working class. The message should be populism.

Populist movements in the past have often been ugly because they scapegoated vulnerable minorities. The new Republican populism shouldn't blame the "47 percent" of Mitt Romney's imagination, or immigrants seeking to make a better life. The new Republican populism should declare war on the cronies and special interests who use big government to rig the game in their favor and deny opportunity to those trying to climb the ladder and live the American dream.

It's time for free-market populism and a Republican Party that fights against all forms of political privilege -- a party that champions all who want to work and take risks in order to improve their lives and raise a family....

.....Instead of trying to convince successful people that Democrats will take away their wealth, why not explain to the middle class that big government is keeping them down?

Americans look at Washington and know the game is rigged against them. Conservatives can promise to level the field by getting the bureaucrats and politicians out of it.

Regulations disproportionately harm small businesses and thus benefit the big guys who can afford to hire Byron or Kimberly Dorgan. Bailouts of existing giants keep entrepreneurs from entering a field.

Every small businessman, ambitious immigrant, and would-be-entrepreneur should be a Republican. So should every working man who sees his tax dollars going to Warren Buffett, General Electric and Pfizer.

Democrats run the game these days, and that game is rigged. Republicans need to woo those are losing the game.

I don’t know what to do.

Stand up and fight or sit back and watch this Country die so I can say “Told ya so” all my ding-a-ling friends & family who are telling me to shut-up on Facebook.

I think Romney was more than proven correct in his 47% statement.

"47 percent" of Mitt Romney's imagination

Imagination? I think not, the number maybe off by some %%, but lets face the facts, once you stick your nose in the trough of entitlements it's difficult to leave.

The bottom line is liberals create and maintain constituents via social programs and the perpetuation of victimization. Conservative alienate constituents via expectations of responsibility and effort.

I culled my FB. Even some family and longterm friends...and terminated a longterm relationship. I’m done with them. From now on, every contractor, hairdresser, restaurant, shop..anywhere I spend my hard earned money will be done through the filter of who they voted for. I haven’t bought so much as a lightbulb from GE, will NEVER buy a car from GM, refused Comcast and a host of others as I find out more.

I refuse to feed the beast and I’ll vote with my ever shrinking wallet.

Same here, for the past four years, and it feels good! Every dollar spent, or not spent, is a political decision.

Good article. This is where Romney fell flat on his face, it seems. The dirty little secret of the U.S. today is that Big Business and Big Government are complicit in the ongoing establishment of what is an unmistakeably fascist social order. I’ve had a lot of dealings with the trucking industry over the years, and it’s amazing how frequently different parts of the industry are completely at odds with each other over various government policy issues. For example, the American Truck Association (ATA) has quietly been a strong supporter of the regulations to allow Mexican trucks in the U.S. under those NAFTA provisions. Go figure, eh?

At this point even "getting" all of those working people will not be enough.

Now it is really a numbers game, "we" versus "them" and from here on forward there will always be more of "them".

We, so easily, forgot that you never get the "time" back - continually kicking the can down the road becomes self-limiting.

The GOP/RNC and the republican party can go straight to Hades! They foisted this OBSTRUCTION upon us...are we really gonna keep supporting their rino candidates and their stupidass giddy-up get-alongs? The republican party is bankrupt!

What the truth of the matter is CONSERVATIVES as a group just do not have the will to fight politics. That fine, it's not our religion, however this is what ends up happening the rino/moderates gain control of the party we align ourselves with, the party gives us a LOSER rino to vote for and this is what happens...DESTRUCTION!

The mass exodus of conservatives from the republican party in coming weeks should be like a stampeding herd of buffalo!

The 47% are not in Mitt’s imagination, they exist, and nothing Republicans can do will ever change them.

Part of that 47% voted 98% for Obama even though they are 25% unemployed.

Let the whole thing collapse, and then these “working people” figure it out themselves.

We still have the same goal (strong, educated, employed, family- and faith-based America). However, the game plan need to be changed to reach it. We can’t keep running plays that don’t get us anywhere.

How about they stop pandering, wooing or sucking up to any particular segment of society, find a set of principles AND STICK TO THEM!

If they tried doing that for a change, the people will find them.

You begin by thanking Obama supporters for killing off any chance of Obamacare being repealed. Send them a Happy New Years Message which brings a series of Obama Tax increases.

GOP must woo working people chasing American dream

Sit back. Obama and the democrats will woo them for us (as long as we do NOT allow Obama to blame the GOP controlled House for all that will happen in the next 2 years)

As the article correctly zeroes in on, it’s big government that’s smothering us. We need to emphasis that. “Groups” can figure this out w/o our reinforcing “grievance” constituencies (just speak to them - as individuals, not as a group); give examples how government enslaves everyone and how it could be diffrent. Explain that soon nothing will be left to “give” - that we need to do is grow opportunity.

And it was built by strong families and capitalism.

We need to celebrate family and “people built it!”

The Left has re-defined both.

It’s time to put the breaks on their anti-American poison by showing the beauty and the strength of America.

Yep... it is big government and we’re battling the giant. I think we need to think smaller and work through local and state government. States are losing their power and this is where we can have much more influence. Just looking at the map that was posted we can see where the dems have the control. So they shouldn’t control a state! We complain about the schools, well communities can take back the schools. I think it’s on the local level that we can make the most impact, slowly but surely.

I was planning on starting my business again (took a little time off) and hiring a crew. Well, that has all changed and now ask myself, why bother? Dream? What dream? It's all just a fantasy now.
