GOP must woo working people chasing American dream
The Washington Examiner ^ | September 8, 2012 | Timothy P. Carney

Posted on 11/08/2012 2:37:32 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Republicans need a new coalition and a new message. The heart of that coalition should be the working class. The message should be populism.

Populist movements in the past have often been ugly because they scapegoated vulnerable minorities. The new Republican populism shouldn't blame the "47 percent" of Mitt Romney's imagination, or immigrants seeking to make a better life. The new Republican populism should declare war on the cronies and special interests who use big government to rig the game in their favor and deny opportunity to those trying to climb the ladder and live the American dream.

It's time for free-market populism and a Republican Party that fights against all forms of political privilege -- a party that champions all who want to work and take risks in order to improve their lives and raise a family....

.....Instead of trying to convince successful people that Democrats will take away their wealth, why not explain to the middle class that big government is keeping them down?

Americans look at Washington and know the game is rigged against them. Conservatives can promise to level the field by getting the bureaucrats and politicians out of it.

Regulations disproportionately harm small businesses and thus benefit the big guys who can afford to hire Byron or Kimberly Dorgan. Bailouts of existing giants keep entrepreneurs from entering a field.

Every small businessman, ambitious immigrant, and would-be-entrepreneur should be a Republican. So should every working man who sees his tax dollars going to Warren Buffett, General Electric and Pfizer.

Democrats run the game these days, and that game is rigged. Republicans need to woo those are losing the game.

“........After the election was called for President Obama, I left a party in Washington and hailed a taxi. The cabbie asked if I was a Republican. After I answered yes, he launched into a tirade against the Tea Party. Feeling drunk and belligerent, I argued back and we shouted at each other across much of the city. By the end, he was articulating Paul Ryanesque policy prescriptions in one breath and cursing “right-wing extremists” in the next; a fiscal conservative who loathed the fiscally conservative Tea Party.

I’d wager my cabbie’s sentiments are pretty common. Polls show people favor less government over more government; lower taxes over higher ones; paying down the debt over spending more on stimulus. Even if Americans don’t like movement conservatism right now, they agree with it on the issues that count. Whatever happened on Tuesday, America’s ideological soil is still conservative.

Our president, meanwhile, is a pompous left-wing ideologue, incapable of moving to the center. News is breaking that he’s considering a national carbon tax for his second term. There’s a big battle over income tax rates looming at the beginning of next year. Obamacare’s destructive new tax on medical devices begins in 2013. With no spending cuts planned for the president’s second term, the national debt will be more than $20 trillion by 2017.

Put plainly, things are going to get a lot worse. And the pain will be directly traceable to big-government social engineering policies: a student loan bubble inflated by Sallie Mae, small businesses not hiring thanks to the high fixed costs of regulations, health insurance premiums surging thanks to Obamacare, and much more.

A contrast will beg to be made. “This is what liberals do,” conservatives should say. “And conservatism is a rational response to this.”.............”

This is an opportunity for states. Thirty states that can, and should, stop taking federal “puppet strings” money. Thirty states that can explain the importance of being citizens of state and local communities, and how through their sound management and “tighten the belt” example they will help bring more on board and turn the tide back to “we the people” and repair the damaged foundation of this country.

The more I think about it, the more I believe we just need to let the Dems do whatever they want. As a matter of fact, our GOP reps should go on every news station and say..

America has spoken. We will not impede or block any bills put before us. This is now 100% Obama’s economy.

Then, do just that. Every time a major corp has a massive layoff, every time gas prices go up, every time grocery prices go up - announce another press conference to say “Should we start blocking it now?”

I’m to the point where I think we should let the whole thing crash and burn. And give them ZERO opportunity to blame conservatives.

That's how Hugo Chavez took over Venezuela. I don't want America to be another domino felled by charismatic leftists who wear red.

I absolutely agree... we need to stop the hand wringing, and I’m so guilty of this myself, and start putting our energy where it can be put to good use. This socialist machine wasn’t built in a day and it won’t be dismantled in a day. So we need to take our country back, one square acre at a time.

Part of that 47% voted 98% for Obama even though they are 25% unemployed.

Yes, and of that 25% unemployed, 100% of them are not going hungry or without a roof over their head, thanks to Barack Hussein Mountain Dew Comacho Obama and his vile Demonic Party stealing money from the remaining 53% of producers.

You are on to something.

What was the GOP thinking hooking it’s wagon to a message of firing Americans?

HIRE AMERICANS.

Bring back US industry, and stop buying imports. Now.

Ben Franklin had it right. “When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”

Dennis Miller is pointing the way for individuals to help change the system: Dennis Miller Audio

Its at the end of the piece (its not long) basically don't be the schmuck who works hard to support the "looters" be wise in your endeavors and instead of choosing to take that second job etc. take Uncle Bummer's money in any form you can get it.

It has become my mantra. These last few days I am working on all the Gub'ment freebies I can get. My first stop was Obama Phones. I don't qualify BUT that didn't stop me. I've several friends and family who do. So we have two Obama phones on the way and several more filling out the applications. Next stop is Gub'ment College Money.

I've a friend that work in some pseudo Gub'ment office that helps people with Gub'ment business grants and such. He is working up some scenarios in which I can get some grants and such for starting a new business. I've got empty commercial buildings it should be easy to get a start-up going. I'll do it all legal but I won't put a dime of my own money in it and if you know anything about business that is a sure bet to fail. But who cares it won't be my money!

I vote for the latter...

Too many fat and happy people sitting around, getting freebies on my dime.

Time to introduce some misery into these peoples lives...no more Bush tax cuts, and sequestration 'full speed ahead'.

They voted for it, it's about time they get it...

We are destroying our nation.

Those under 40 have no clue what the American Dream is. They have had their public school indoctrination to tell them someone owes them a living, a job, and if they do not get money merely for existing it is a Republican/Conservative/Christian’s fault.
