Veterans Day is Sunday this year. It is always observed on Nov. 11, to mark the cessation of World War I hostilities on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Here are some activities planned for Veterans Day and the days around it. All are open to the public unless noted.

A few years ago, a friend of mine gave me a 1918 Winchester 30’06 “Enfield or Eddystone for those inclined”. He had it left over from his father who’d thought about converting it over to a sporter but died before he got going.

It was rebarreled in the 11th Month of 1918...Unfortunately, it was only the barrel and the action, and I spent a couple of years locating correct parts and a decent authentic stock for it. It is the earliest US Military weapon in my collection and it is beautiful.

My daughter works at a hospital in West O. There is a group of WWII vets that meets there each Friday to eat lunch in the cafeteria. I have ordered a cake, have table decorations, will pay for their lunches. Hopefully none of them are FReepers reading this, so it will be a surprise!

Well now I have been updated that the hospital cafeteria will be glad to put out the decorations AND give the guys free lunch (I was planning to pay for them). And one of my daugther’s co-workers, who sings at weddings and church solos, has asked if she can sing the National Anthem to them. This is actually making me tear up....
