Boehner pivots on taxes after Obama win

In the wake of the GOP’s disappointing election, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Wednesday signaled a willingness to accept higher tax revenues as part of a deficit cutting deal.

The fast-approaching deadline to stop a combination of tax hikes and spending cuts left Boehner and other leaders with little time to digest Republican Mitt Romney’s defeat on Tuesday.

Leaders on both sides of the Capitol moved swiftly to stake out their positions on the fiscal cliff, with Boehner calling for a “down payment” that would lead to a farther-reaching pact in 2013 and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) saying he did not want to see a short-term fix.

“I’m not for kicking the can down the road; I think we’ve done that far too much,” Reid told reporters in the Capitol. “I think we should just roll up our sleeves and get it done.”

The Democratic leader also cast Obama’s victory over Romney — in which the president won nearly every swing state —as overwhelming, and noted that his party gained seats in both chambers of Congress. “That’s not the status quo,” he said.

I am going to bombard my reps to have Boehner removed as Speaker.

I suspect the GOP will just bend over and take it in the hope that maybe THIS time they’ll get a cuddle afterward...

This is nothing new. Pubbies have always said that they were willing to get more revenue - through tax reform and increasing jobs.

They have stated that they would lower the rate and broaden the base through closing loopholes.

Obama wants to raise the rates on upper income and ignore the rest which is a job - killing way to do it per Pubbies.
Wealthy people like Buffet won't pay anymore tax, but the small business owner will.

Pretty much.

Then they whine and call those that don’t reward them for this behavior with their vote traitors, responsible for the destruction of the country blah blah...

Last I checked I didn’t promise not to raise taxes and then did so. I didn’t promise to cut taxes and renege. I didn’t promise to fight healthcare then continue funding it. I didn’t sign off on earmarks and subsidies to my personal districts to grease palms for votes. I didn’t promise to read every piece of legislation before a vote then surrender. No, these are actions the people who claim to be our frontline warriors in the halls of congress make then every two to four years arrive back with empty promises things will be different this time when they didn’t follow through.

They are liars, they are cheats, they are corrupt, they have no morals and ethics, no soul centered on a strong foundation. I’m not giving my money so they can stay rich in power and not represent my interests. I’m not giving my time only to be backhanded by these elites with snickers and derision for my faith. I’m certainly not giving them the one thing mythey truly covet. A vote they have to do nothing to earn.

And you guys doubted me when I said it was over! Boehner is the smell of a stale fart lingering in the Capitol building.

Boehner has always been a wimp with a nice tan.

He's been practically invisible lately and when he does pop up, its to offer Obama tax hikes in exchange for Democrat promises of spending cuts. We all know how that works out. Tax hikes on everyone - not just 'the rich' - and miniscule cuts - if any - in projected budget item increases, making them useless. No thanks, John. We desperately need a new Speaker. One with a spine instead of a tan.

Im all for those rich liberal celebrities who raised money for Obama and cheered his re-election..let them pay their “fair share” 70 percent just like in France..they love Socialism SO much..make them suffer through it..the only way people will earn how horrible Socialism is is to make them live the consequences of it

“NO MORE TAXES.” ONLY CUTS.

Needs repeating. “NO MORE TAXES - ONLY CUTS"

This fiscal cliff is of the Dems making - let them squirm until they give in. Hold the line on taxes and reduce them. The Dems wasted money, get them to stop.

So, did he actually say “raising taxes,” or is this actually still the same tax reform plan that Romney and the GOP had put forth? I see that Mediacom apparently had to change their blatantly made-up tax hike “quote” in a caption from earlier today, but trying to un-ring a bell, etc, etc.

It is a waste of time calling these fools...the deal will be... we will raise revenue and in the future we will cut spending..the deficit will stay the same..OBAMA buys more votes...it is over until the system collapses... there are more people getting free stuff..than people working??? Look at single women with kids...OBAMA will take care of them

Let’s see....taxes get (and stay) raised. The promised spending cuts never materialize. Ever. Rather, they become spending increases (”investments don’t ya know?).

Is there any other pattern?

So according to this then Boehner is the democrat, and Reid is the republican. I can tell you this though. If Reid is actually saying that then it is a manipulative trick. The only solution involves cutting over 1 trillion in socialist benefits. As for Boehner- Yeah he really is democrat. I figure that out a long time ago.

The GOP is “Whiged out”. Get rid of Bonehead Boehner and let’s have Wilson as speaker. You know, the guy that said “You Lie!” to Obamboozle during a speech?

Instead of The Weeper of the House Boehner, let's suggest that the Republicans get a Speaker with a little backbone like Paul Ryan. He understands the fiscal problems and instead of just bending over for Bathhouse Barry Benghazi, maybe he can extract something.

What would be the procedure to dump Boehner? He is not up to the task. I'm letting my congresscritter know of my vote of no confidence.

Gets a little old watching Boehner trashed. People just don’t get it. It isn’t the message, it is who delivers the message to the people and that happens to be our greatest enemy, THE MEDIA. Does anyone really understand that there isn’t one thing, not one, that a Republican can say that will EVER be reported fairly or accurately? The Republicans have to walk on eggshells with every issue, they know it will come back to bite them always. THE REPUBLCANS ARE NOT THE ENEMY

How about grow a pair, cut the bullshit and talk to the American people in real words; not flowerly speeches (”My good friend and colleague from across the aisle”).

Then tell the media to go F*ck themselves and take out a full-page ad w/ the plan.
