(CNN) - Despite a disappointing showing by Republican Senate candidates on Election Day, the man who spearheaded the GOP Senate election effort is poised to take the number two position in the party's leadership behind Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, several GOP aides told CNN.
Sen. John Cornyn of Texas is expected next Wednesday to be elected by members of the Republican caucus to become the Minority Whip. He will replace retiring Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona.
His promotion was essentially solidified Thursday after potential rival Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, who as Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference is the third-ranking Republican, announced he would seek re-election to that post and not run to move up.
One GOP aide explained that there is not a consensus among Republican senators that Cornyn is to blame for the poor results at the polls that saw the Democrats expand their majority in a year Republicans were widely believed to have a good shot at taking control of the Senate.

Not to say he should be promoted or not, but in his defense we would have broke even in the senate if those nominees could have an answer for rape that isn’t going to offend everyone. How hard is it, when asked about abortion exceptions, to simply say “I respect all life and that is why I do not support those abortion exemptions”? If you offer up pseudoscience that claims women automatically miscarry rapes or that a rape is a “gift”, you will lose everytime.
Cornyn’s level of incompetence is truly breath-taking. He really, really, really screwed this up. I can’t emphasize enough how bad of a job he did. The GOP easily could have picked up 5 seats. We ended up losing seats. I don’t know how anyone could have done a worse job than him yet here he is, moving up the chain to a higher position.
You mean the same Cornyn that tried really hard to give us Charlie Crist.
Promote him? Send him packing.
In the past if you lost elections you’d be forced to step down. Frist and delay and Hastert are gone. yet McConnell and Coryn remain. That says it all about the current GOP. LOL

Sorry, but you ALMOST sound like you think COMPETENCE has anything to do with it.
The only thing that garners leadership etc is how many times you were able to convince (or buy) your constituents to send you back.

How did we ever lose the Montana and North Dakota seats? Those states voted for Romney yet split the ticket electing rat senators.
As a Texan, I have been totally unimpressed with Cornyn. He seems to be worthless in standing up for conservative principles.
