Gas rationing to start in N.Y. and N.J. [Get used to it...also coming with healthcare]

For those in the New York area suffering not only from the devastating storms but also from gas lines that have lasted longer than a work shift, some relief is on the way Friday.

Leaders announced gas rationing in parts of New York and New Jersey in an effort to address the gas shortage brought on by the one-two punch of Superstorm Sandy and this week's nor'easter.

"Drivers are still facing long lines, frustrations are only growing and it now appears that there will be shortages for possibly another couple of weeks," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters Thursday afternoon. "The best way, we think, to cut down the lines and help customers buy gas faster, to help gas stations stay open longer and to reduce the potential for disorder, is to alternate the days that drivers can purchase gas."

The move brought applause from many.

I heard (NJ local news) that NJ is stopping odd-even gas rationing this weekend. The last time I went to buy gas, there was no wait.

Whatever Cuomo and Bloomberg are doing, it's not working.

What, you think Bloomberg has to wait in line?

You have to remember that there was never a "shortage" here in New Jersey. There simply weren't enough gas stations with power that could meet the normal demand. On top of that, you had some pretty idiotic panic buying among dumb motorists ... like the story my local gas station owner told me about a person who waited on line for two hours to top off a tank that was something like 85% full already (he assumed that was the case because he couldn't put more than 2 gallons in the tank).

Once power was restored to more and more gas stations in New Jersey, the problem has pretty much corrected itself.

Surprised they are not rationing food yet .

Oh wait I just read someone complaining about that

“I can’t get to work. I can’t get any gas. I can’t buy food.”

Allow prices to float with supply and demand. Shortages are caused by price ceilings, it’s econ 101.

"but also from gas lines that have lasted longer than a work shift"

Within a work shift, I could drive from DC to NY and back. No word of lines in Philly, why don't they just drive there with some cans if they have around 90 miles left on the tank? The gas isn't that far away.

These are residents of *BLUE* states. If they were smart enough to figure that solution, New York and New Jersey would be red states, now wouldn’t they?

Yes, I’m at the Jersey Shore and the gas lines have disappeared. The day before yesterday was an odd day but they were taking evens as well - without a wait. There was a cop there, though, to insure that things went smoothly.

Cuomo and Bloomberg don’t seem to be doing much of anything but running their mouths and dragging out this nightmare for the folks of NY. This is however what they voted for “Incompetent Government”. They can take your super sized soda away but lack the knowledge to actually build or re-build anything. Besides they spent all their money policing your sugar intake, do you really expect them to help when there is a real medical and human emergency.

I live in a town that has gas shortages, complete with lines.

Drive 10 minutes up the road and I can buy all the gas I want.

Any time a disaster causes a supply disruption, history has shown that shortages are swiftly corrected by the vilified-but-necessary price gougers. The high prices attracts more supply to be brought into the affected region which ends the shortage and brings prices back down. Examples of swiftly-ended shortages following disasters as a result of allowing the price mechanism are abundant in history, as are examples of painful, protracted shortages as a result of the authorities instituting price controls.
