(CNSNews.com) – A record 70.4 million people were enrolled in the Medicaid health care program for the poor in fiscal year 2011, according to government figures provided to CNSNews.com.

That figure equals about 22 percent of the population, which means there was one person on Medicaid for every 5 Americans in 2011.

The record number of Medicaid enrollees in 2011 – the earliest year for which figures are available – is a count of all persons enrolled in Medicaid for any part of that year, providing the fullest and most accurate count of the size of the entitlement program. (The federal fiscal year in 2011 ran from Oct. 1, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2011.)

For those not so disposed as to be in on the meaning of this, Medicaid is far, far different from Medicare.

Medicare recipients are those Americans that have paid their 1.45% of their wages to their so-called ‘account’ whereas Medicaid recipients are largely welfare losers, illegal Mexicans, and other lowlifes who have likely never worked for a W-2 in their adult lives.

The same people who are likely collecting SSI....supplemental income (NOT SSDI where at least the leeches have worked 40 quarters). SSA administers SSI but the funds don’t come from our famed “lock box” but from the general fund; it is nonetheless administered by SSA. Together, SSI and SSDI amounts for TWENTY FIVE PERCENT of all SSA outlays.

Bottom line, they’re effing leeches, no good for nothing. The fact that there are more now collecting is why Obama won.

You have to be elderly to qualify for Medicare. If you happen to get poor before growing old, you go on Medicaid.

I wouldn’t deem them all leeches.

I think it’s a horror story that we have lowered our import taxes and outsourced our jobs overseas and we have this many poor now. This is a shame that stains the records of several administrations.

Almost everyone who ends up in a nursing home will need Medicaid (unless they die before spending all their money).

I know of a number of people who worked their entire life, then acquired a catastrophic illness and could not work. They then ran out of insurance money and retirement savings and had to go onto medicaid so they could live in a public nursing home until they died. Someday it may happen to you. Just as with any govt program, there are those in real need and then there are a bunch of others like illegal immigrants who are taking advantage of the system.

EVERYONE I have ever met who is on Medicaid is scamming the system.

Met a driver whose family is on it - he’s basically paid in cash, while his wife has a job. Family therefore is below poverty level

Know several Chinese immigrants who simply do not report they are actually married. Gov’t sees wife+kids, no income. Dad owns the business. They all work there at no salary, so everything is under the radar. They qualify for medicaid.

I could site more stories

That's true, but one of the outrageous things is that here in TN, the state charges nursing homes over $2600/month bed tax. There is no way it costs the state $2600/month per bed to inspect nursing homes. So why is the bed tax so high? Because in most cases, the FEDs were paying for it. They created a massive incentive for States to institute high taxes and run up the cost of Medicare to the end users.

2006 TN bed tax

Medicaid bed taxes and institutional bias

"EVERYONE I have ever met who is on Medicaid is scamming the system."

You need to volunteer more helping the truly needy. Drop in on the local developmentally disabled day care and see if you can help them some way. You'll meet some truly needy people that need that program and aren't just scamming it.

Disclaimer, I don't volunteer like that, myself, though I recognize it would be good to do. But I did have a job where I got exposure to them.

No, you don't. Anybody who has paid in for 40 quarters and becomes disabled and draws s.s.d.i., after 2 years of disability is auto enrolled in medicare parts A & B.

If your income level is low enough you can get medicaid or medicare and medicaid.

Actually LOTS of people on Medicaid do work ,although they don’t pay any federal income tax. They have opened the eligibility to the point where lots of low income earners now qualify.

Yep, my uncle was in a nursing home for 18 months and after his life savings were exhausted he died.

my adult dtr who has dystonia and Aspergers than is a leech...they give her just over $400 a month plus the health care....because she lives with us, she does not get a free phone nor food stamps...

if we kicked her out on the street, she could get much more money and many more benefits....thousands more in fact, because she probably would get housing, food stamps, utilities paid, etc...

Medicaid is used by lots of working parents to cover their young kids....if you have 5 kids and you work for $30,000 a yr, your kids are all on medicaid....

And I know of a number of cases where those people worked to transfer assets before applying for Medicaid to shield their heirs’ inheritance. We got stuck with the bill.

I have no doubt there are truly needy, but such massive Gov’t involvement in medicine is what is creating scarcity anyway.

You are taking the leftist argument - ANY change to the corrupt free-for-all that is taking place now will hurt someone. Can’t have that! So nothing is done.

Wait until we turn into Argentina or Venezuela. There will be plenty of poor to worry about then.
