WASHINGTON New Pentagon details show that the first U.S. military unit arrived in Libya more than 14 hours after the attack on the consulate in Benghazi was over and four Americans, including the ambassador, were dead.
A Defense Department timeline obtained by The Associated Press underscores how far the military response lagged behind the Sept. 11 attack, due largely to the long distances the commando teams had to travel to get to Libya.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and his top military adviser were notified of the attack about 50 minutes after it began and were about to head into a previously scheduled meeting with President Barack Obama. The meeting quickly turned into a discussion of potential responses to the unfolding situation in Benghazi, where militants had surrounded the consulate and set it on fire. The first wave of the attack at the consulate lasted less than two hours.
Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed in the attack. Intelligence, State Department and military officials have released details on the response in an effort to answer Republican criticism that the administration was holding back what it knew about the assault and when.
Panetta and other defense officials have repeatedly said that they did not have armed aircraft or military teams near Benghazi that could have gotten there quickly.
In a letter to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Friday, Panetta specifically addressed the claim that the military could have dispatched armed unmanned aerial vehicles, AC-130 gunships or fighter jets to thwart the attack. Such aircraft were not in the region and not an effective option, he said.
Panetta said that based on a continuous evaluation of threats, military forces were spread around Europe and the Middle East to deal with a variety of missions.

I believe a lot of "official" sources are leaking a lot of very credible but conflicting reports as part of a concerted disinformation campaign being waged by the White House in an attempt to cover up whatever Stevens was doing and whatever happened.
14 hours, that is STILL OVER 6 hours too damn late if this 14 hours is even True.....
THIS is Operation CHAOS. Daze and confuse. Lie and obfuscate.
WE need to force it to crash and burn!!!
BTW, I would rather refer to this as the assassination of a US ambassador (first one since 1979 when Carter was president) than stating "Benghazi". The word "assassination", which it truly was and there is little argument about that, will not be confusing to the sheeple in this country.
Actually I wasn't aware that any were sent.
Geez Louise....what a performance.
“14 hours, that is STILL OVER 6 hours too damn late if this 14 hours is even True.....”
Read it again and it gets even worse. 14 hours after the attack ended.
The attack took 7 hours by all reports.
That’s 21 hours later...20 hours after Zero the Hero knew about it and gave his famous “CHARGE” command...what a bunch of BS we are getting from these murdering thugs in the WH.
I could have sworn we had a carrier task force in the Med?
Don't know the exact location of where it was, but flying at supersonic speeds, I can't imagine that a squadron of fighters could not have reached Bengazi in an hour or less.
Plus, what about all the (reported) Military assets stationed in Italy, some 400 miles from Bengazi?
Something does not compute here and methinks that the sycophant, political animal, Sec Def is continuing with his (no doubt "ordered") obfuscation and dissembling...if not outright, LYING!
Might have been some valuable papers at the mission....weapons at the annex.
A senior defense official on Friday said forces were at the ready around the globe, but it took time to assess the murky situation,
C'mon! So murky that they didn't know the difference between Tripoli and Benghazi? That Tripoli is as far from Benghazi as Sigonella?
We're supposed to believe that for almost two months, with an election going on, 0coward didn't answer accusations that he didn't do anything with this simple information?
Hey, fella, it's not raining you're peeing on me!!!
He should have had orders out to roll Herk's and Globemasters full of Special Ops, cooks, bakers, and straight legs before he got to the meeting with the great Won.
To paraphrase the Won; "we have things like radios now". There'd have been plenty of time to recall them after the CNC scotched the only honorable plan.
Again, B.S. excuses that the informed citizen won’t buy, but the well regular and blindly partisan will buy.
Nope, no carrier group in the Med at that time. Or now AFAIK. One was brought back to the U.S. on the east coast and two others were in the Pacific for war games.
Come on everyone.....”Arrived in LIBYA”......not Benghazi. Confuse and obfuscate. Do we have any military today in Benghazi?
Do wonder Patreus took a way out....
The author of LEADING FROM BEHIND was on tv. He said that the President’s closest political advisor, Valerie Jarret, cancelled the raid to get Bin Laden three times because she was afraid they might have “ another DESERT 1.” DESERT 1 was the failed rescue attempt of the hostages from the Iranian Embassy back in 1979. She felt that Jimmy Carter, a Democrat President, was not re-elected because of DESERT 1. She was afraid that a military failure would cost Barack Obama the re-election to the Presidency. Now, do you see why no military assets were sent to Benghazi? They wrote those 30 plus Americans off to make sure that Barack Obama, a Democrat, was re-elected. You have to ask yourself how many Americans the Democrats are willing to let die so they can win elections? 500? 100,000? Ten million? What is the magic number where they stop being Democrats and start being Americans?
the new one they just cooked up?
