Romney lost by playing defense, Santorum says
CNN ^

Posted on 11/09/2012 3:51:17 PM PST by Arthurio

(CNN) - Former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum offered no insight into his own political future in a Friday CNN interview, but did offer his thoughts as to why the Republican nominee lost to President Barack Obama on Tuesday.

"What Mitt Romney, in my opinion, didn't do was go out and vigorously defend the beliefs that he said he espoused and didn't go on the offense," Santorum said in an interview to air Friday on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight." "And when you're playing defense, which is what I believe the campaign was doing and Republicans were doing generally throughout the course of this campaign you're not going to win.

"He didn't make it about those two fundamentally different visions for America," he said of Obama's re-election campaign, "and I don't think we did a very good job either as Republicans pointing out those fundamental differences and what type of freedom we're talking about."

yes lets give up about those counties reporting 110% or even how one state VA had military votes going 50/50 which is unheard of
or lets ignore how more people voted tan registered in areas
or better lets say how those observers were thrown out
or maybe how about COL Allen west is finding out that republican votes were not counted in the Dem counties and has picked some up

I culd go on and on but hey lets move on and talk about a bad campaign, I mean we can;t look like sore losers and be called a name off the Dems attack dogs, oopps sorry the media

I don’t think that it benefited Romney to play defense on the last 2 debates.

If he was more aggressive, like he was in the first debate, I think he would have certainly gotten more votes. Maybe, not enough to swing election.

On another matter, Ryan was not effective in his debate.
Repubs must learn how to put down childish debate tactics like Biden employed. Ryan could have put him very easily in his place by say, “Stop acting like a three year old. Adults are trying to have a debate about the future of this country. If you continue to misbehave, we will be forced to put you in a corner for time-out.....Pretty easy...fight back....

The incumbent Senator, Rick Santorum, Rick was booted from the Senate in a 17.4% disaster.

If you're waiting for any republican to come out during an interview and accuse the democrat of cheating you'll only die old & confused. And he couldn't really say that Romney wasn't viscious enough either. Although both are true.

Santorum gave the only answer he could safely give. Not very courageous but there it is.

Romney lost because he does not believe in conservative principles and never has. He was the 3rd or 4th pick to conservatives and only got the nomination because the elites in the republican party had preordained his candidacy from the start. Newt and Santorum were torpedoed to make sure Romney got the nod even though he had more money to run than all the others combined. Get ready for Jeb Bush to ride in with great fanfare from the republican leadership!!!

his push for AMNESTY

But all of us attuned politically was frustrated to the point of madness with Mitt’s Milquetoast impersonation during the 2nd and 3rd debate. If Mitt had attcked the Puke as he had his primary opponents, he be taking office in January. Bob

Sanotrum is wrong. Romney lost because dems have huge pools of taker voters in urban America and the dems can get them to the polls in national elections with a marxist candidate of color at the top of the ticket. Their pool of voters is bigger than ours and will remain so. Deluding ourselves that we need to tune our message or get on the amnesty bus to win national elections is, well, stupidity.

Santorum would have been scorned to oblivion in a general against Obama. He would also have gotten far less of the women's vote.

2% would not have been the margin. Obama would have won by 7-10%.

Lets not forget that he tied Romney in the Michigan primary as well. That alone didn’t bode well for Romney considering the fact that in 08 Romney flogged McCain here by nearly 10 points. Romney ran a Detroit centered race and won in places that were the least likely to vote for him in the general.

Yeah, I agree to that. Makes me sick when people think that winning elections is all about being the most vicious, radical, candidate there is. Sort of like thinking everytime you get turned down for a job, you cut an extra finger off your hand for your own self-inflicted punishment.

Right now, the best thing to do is work toward the 2014 midterms, and as voters, make sure that we give charitably and simply reach out with conservative values as opposed to conservative politics to people who need help right now, and frankly, as a rephrase of a prior meme, “let D.C. Bankrupt itself and let the currency inflate.

How much of the “women’s vote” did Santorum get in Missouri, Tennessee, Colorado, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississipi, Louisiana and other states he won, and in Michigan and Wisconsin where he got within 3-5% of Romney who outspent him by about a hundred million bucks?

Santorum turned out to be a real sleeper and was coming on strong when the GOP-e smothered his inconveniently successful campaign

He, Rick Santorum, lost because the voice of GOP primary voters was cast, and it wasn’t for him by majority, it ended up going to Romney instead.

As for Nationally, who are you thinking, Gingrich? Santorum? Cain? All of these people had either such poor organizational skills, poor appeal to women, or stupid abortion/rape rants that they would lose more handily than Romney did. The problem is an increasingly taker electorate, combined, with a “Howard Stern” electorate.

I have to admit, I was thinking that all during the Biden/Ryan pseudo-”debate”.The Romney-Ryan ticket obviously thought there was more to be gained by taking the high ground
and acting like serious gentlemen. They were wrong, and the disappointment was just a wee bit more delayed than when we watched McCain slowly capitulate and resentfully kick his campaign away four years earlier, and NOT EVEN ALLOW Sarah Palin to take up the slack.Obama and Biden, after all had four solid years of FAILURE, so you just KNOW their demeanors would have to reflect the idea that they had four years of blazing successes, and just who are these upstarts Romney and Ryan to challenge us???We just didn’t have two candidates who had it in them to butt heads with the likes of Obama and Biden and launch a withering attack on them commensurate with the totally disrespectful, juvenile, and cynical way they were treated by the Dem candidates.Your imaginary dialog offered for Ryan would’ve at least given the Republican side a fighting chance, and put the two teams on even ground. But inevitably, Romney or Ryan taking that tack would’ve been roundly criticized by the MSM, so who really knows what would’ve worked?

Rick is an idiot - he couldn’t beat Romney and if he wanted to proved his worth he could of campaigned for him.

Sitting back now and criticizing just makes him look like any other politician without a real job instead of a leader.

The GOP got beat not just Romney. They had a better idea on how to market their candidate. If you give stuff away to people then entice / encourage them to vote, these people will do exactly what they are told - sheeple.

you have a good point. Its tough to counter all the lies of the demonrats, run a good campaing trying to get your message out. It a lot tougher when you have to fight a bised media as well.
Problem is they don’t fear us at all.
We have to make them fear us.
We could attack what they need; advertising monney.
We could start with their news operations.
Say nbc nightly news, just target eveyone of their sponsors and at least make it cost them double to run bad news depts.
I think it could work.
that might get their attention hard to tell.

I'm not talking about the primary or southern states for that matter.

I'm talking about the general. Santorum would have been completely laughed out of town and would have gotten far less of the women's vote (particularly in swing states) than Romney.

To the comment: “Mitt did a great job in the debates. He ran hard.
He even got JimRob’s support and that was just about impossible.”

I didn’t much follow Romney’s politics before this election as some of the rest of you who seem very angry that he was elected. But I backed him after he was our candidate. I was impressed with his debates as well. How many of us could have kept the presidential cool that he did when the rules were broken by Candy Crawley (sorry, don’t know her last name). I thought he out performed Obama all three times (in spite of having liberal moderators each time.)

I am convinced that Obama won through lying and deceiving the American people, along with voter fraud, and cover ups and the media.

Why does the media support him anyway??? What advantage is there to them if he is in power? I don’t understand it.

The day after the election a hispanic at my work asked me if I had watched the election coverage. (He is a new employee and didn’t know he was talking to a conservative.) So since he asked, we discussed it and I let him know of the loss he and his family and children would inherit due to Obama being re-elected. I let him know it would surely cause businesses to move out of our state and explained why. He looked somber. I filled him in on Benghazi. He never heard about Benghazi. He seemed sad finding out this “new information”. We talked about how many just want freebies and that could be why they elected Obama (but obviously he is not asking for freebies since he is a working man.) But I asked him how his children would be able to get a job when they graduate if more and more businesses move out of state. He said he didn’t know. There is just one tiny example of the fact that Obama has won due to deceit and cover ups. Many people just don’t know who this man is and the horrible job he has done so far as president, because it is not reported.

Anyway, I wish everyone would stop blaming Romney for this loss.

How does one win against deception, cheating, lying, intimidation, cover ups, 8 years of media bashing the republican party and president (who did a much better job than Obama.)

If I had a choice I would elect the most conservative person running. But Romney was the better of the two and probably would have gotten our American economy back in shape.

I didn’t know much of Paul Ryan before this election but I also liked his conservative values that he portrayed.
