John Schnatter Papa John's CEO: Obamacare likely to raise costs, employee's hours being cut

A day after Barack Obama earned a second term in the White House, Papa John's founder and CEO John Schnatter said the president's signature health-care reform law would increase his business costs and possibly result in employees' hours being cut.

Schnatter, a part-time Naples resident, made the comments Wednesday night inside a small auditorium at Edison State College's Collier County campus. In August, he made national headlines after telling shareholders the Affordable Care Act — commonly known as Obamacare — would result in a 10- to 14-cent increase for customers buying a pizza.

"I got in a bunch of trouble for this," he told the students. "That's what you do, is you pass on costs. Unfortunately, I don't think people know what they're going to pay for this."

Schnatter, a Mitt Romney supporter and fundraiser, said he was not "pro or against" the reform law but likened the government's involvement in health care to its operation of the U.S. Postal Service, saying "the worst entity in the world for running the thing is the government."

About a third of Papa John's employees are covered by the company's health insurance plan, although Schnatter said he has always wanted 100 percent of them on the plan. The rising costs of health insurance, he said, have been a deterrent.

"The good news is 100 percent of the population is going to have health insurance. We're all going to pay for it," he said, estimating the new law would cost the business $5 million to $8 million annually.

Under the Affordable Care Act, full-time employees — those working 30 hours or more per week — would have to be provided with insurance at companies with more than 50 workers. Schnatter said it was likely that some franchise owners would reduce employees' hours in order to avoid having to cover them.

"That's probably what's going to happen," he said. "It's common sense. That's what I call lose-lose."

Other than his comments on health care, Schnatter largely steered clear of politics. The 50-year-old said future entrepreneurs need to marry talent and passion in their endeavors, his being business-savvy and a love of pizza.

"I don't consider this work," he said. "I wake up thinking about Papa John's and I go to bed thinking about Papa John's."

He credited the business' success to having a strong team of people and a quality product, repeating his commercial's catchphrase — "Better ingredients, better pizza, Papa John's" — several times.

Schnatter answered questions for about 45 minutes before leaving to participate in a telethon with the University of Kentucky basketball team to raise money for Hurricane Sandy victims. He told students he hopes to present the American Red Cross with a $1 million check on Friday.

They cut people to 35 hours. ObamaCare says 30 hours is full time.

So they cut people to 29 hours. The Red Lobster/Olive Garden Deardon company. People will be working two or three part time jobs.

Government doesn’t get the law of unintended consequences.

The law of unintended consequences? I think they do it intentionally at times. Not only does this dam*ed law hurt business, but it will ruin the best healthcare in the world.

Of course, they know what they are doing, and its intentional. I guess people didn’t believe Mitt. Sooner than later, they will wake up to the stark reality of what voting for the POS obama brought upon this country.

Who ever said it was “unintended”?

In France, 35 hours is considered Full Time and Overtime is paid for any hours exceeding it.

The Unions will love a shorter work week being considered Full Time Employment.

Waiters make $2 an hour. The time off won’t help them.

It’s going to be very interesting what the excuse is going to be this time around when the percentage of unemployed rises into the double digits. “I-I-It’s Bush but by proxy!”

What I’m wondering is, what will Obama do to punish those businesses cutting hours? I mean it won’t be presented as punishment, but I’m sure the administration and the new, even more liberal, Senate will propose some clause that prevents businesses from “thwarting the intent” of Obamacare or some such thing.

Trust me...they do, and there are no unintended consequences with Bronko Bama.

Well, anything that builds resentment of Obama and Democrat Policies is good with me.

No they won't. Bush tried to rein in Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac. Barnie Frank said there was no problem whatsover. A few days ago, some 5 years after the collapse, more voters blame Bush for the economy than Obama.

Left-wing hippie stoners in Mom’s basement with the munchies boycotting a pizza chain? Yeah, that’ll work.

Time for patriots to go Galt!

Cut back to the bare minimum salary needed to eek out a living.

The leeches, and looters will eventually kill US. Why prolong it?

The less capital the muggers aka govt get the sooner they run away!

***

Doesn't work that way. One of my neighbors lost her job earlier this year. She now works 3 part-time jobs. She blames the greedy businesses and corporate fat cats. That is and will be the official explanation for the economic mess we are in. The Obama administration and the Democratic Party will blame every problem on “the rich.” And gullible voters will continue to buy that explanation

If Obamacare fails the Dems will just say it wasn't done right and fight for it again.
It's what socialists dream of, doing it their way thinking it was never done right before.

Repeal it and the fight will be against teachers indoctrinating children for the next round.

Unemployment will not rise. Just watch the news. The number might peak in nearly the 9% range, briefly, but then they will find yet another way to cook the books, and it will come back down.

You will know it is lower because that is what they will tell you.

Suck it up, JuliAmerica. Remember... you wanted this. And it’s only beginning. But hey.. you got your abortions, contraceptions, obamaphones, EBT cards, welfare and Obamacare.

Now you can live your pre-mapped, government-directed, government-subsidized, government-rationed, government-regulated lives in government-approved peace.
