CIA Director Petraeus resigns over extramarital affair with biographer

Cia Director David Petraeus’ career came crashing down like a cheap spy novel yesterday when he resigned over an extramarital, wartime affair with a woman who wrote a flattering biography about the retired four-star general.

The bombshell — revealed after Petraeus resigned his post — stunned the political, military and intelligence establishments with reports of steamy e-mails between the two, including a reference to sex under a desk.

Petraeus’ lover was identified as Paula Broadwell, 40 — the co-author of a fawning biography, “All In: The Reuters

“After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair,” Petraeus said in a letter to CIA colleagues yesterday.

“Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the president graciously accepted my resignation.”

The relationship dated to Petraeus’ days commanding troops in Afghanistan in 2010 and 2011. The affair prompted an FBI investigation over fears that Broadwell had accessed the general’s e-mail, possibly gaining access to classified information.

But another FBI source told Newsmax that the FBI had been intercepting Petraeus’ e-mails since last spring after it mistook one exchange with his girlfriend as a reference to corruption.

His position as CIA director allowed him top security clearance, and since he’s married, the FBI continued to monitor the exchanges.

One e-mail included graphic references about having sex under a desk, the Newsmax report said.

As head of the CIA, philandering is considered a breach of security that could compromise national security by opening him up to blackmail.

The affair itself could be considered grounds for a court-martial.

Broadwell broke off the affair with the 60-year-old Petraeus after he was sworn in as CIA director on Sept. 6, 2011, but he continued to pursue her with numerous e-mails, the Newsmax report said.

Broadwell — who is a reserve army officer in addition to being a writer — describes herself as a national security analyst who resides in Charlotte, NC. She is married to Scott Broadwell, a radiologist, and they have two children. Like Petraeus, she’s a West Point graduate.

Her LinkedIn bio says she served a three-year stint as a liaison officer with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force from 2003 to 2006

I am sure she was crawling under his desk to pass an obstacle course.

Email is no way to pursue an illicit relationship.

Obama (via the Democratic machine) probably knew of this affair before appointing Petraeus as Director of the CIA and held this in his back pocket until he needed some leverage.

Now, if Petraeus sings about Benghazi, he may be court martialed. If court martialed, I wonder if he would lose his pension?

No, he wasn’t wise. He was, and is, a self-promoter who took credit for good things and got out of town fast when things started to look bad. The Iraq surge success was phony.

He resigned because the FBI was investigating his honey for having access to the general’s emails that may have contained classified information.. partly. The real reason he resigned is because he was complicit in what happened at Benghazi.

So, she’s a “Reserve Army Officer”. Interesting. Let’s see if they go after her.

I would guess that the FBI would have interviewed some people who were with Petraeus in Afghanistan and that at least one of them would have notified Petraeus that he was being investigated. Yesterday, it was printed that the FBI had notified the White House of this before the election.

Sad, but just a thought out of the box...if P were to testify as a member of Obama's administration he would probably be bound by O's version of what happened. It did seem strange that he came out so strongly in support of the "vicious, slandering" video reason for the invisible mob attack. Perhaps he was under pressure Obama to support or have the affair info leaked.

As a civilian testifying before congress he is no longer restrained from telling the whole truth. It is a testimony I await from someone I still believe is an honorable man.

Only time will tell. This disgrace has a long story yet to be told.

What is strange is that he now feels it is wrong for the Director of CIA to have had an affair (previous to becoming Dir of CIA), but he didn't feel it was wrong when he accepted the appointment as Dir of CIA.

“Steamy emails” sent by the Director of the CIA - We truly are led by stupid people. Corrupt, dishonest liars are one thing, but being really stupid and being in such a critical job to our nation’s security is just unbelievable. And so many of us were under the impression he was one of our best.

From what I’ve read, she is/was a MAJ in the USAR. She was formerly an active duty CPT, a veteran, and in intel.

I have feared that Petraeus was an opportunist but good at his job. I was so hoping that there will be SOMEONE with a conscience that will come forward and expose the criminality of this Admin. I don't know if it will be Petraeus. I do believe there are still some good Dems. We just need one to have a conscience attack so the American people can find out the truth under all the lies.

Had Petraeus not been associated with Bush and Republicans, he would be judged by Democratic standards and still be CIA director.

He’s not the first man in a position of power to get caught by thinking with the wrong head! History repeats itself.

If court martialed, I wonder if he would lose his pension?

No -- because his wife is the daughter of a 4 star General.

Is anyone else surprised by the fact that the FBI can monitor all e-mails of the Director of the CIA? This means that Holder is potentially monitoring the e-mails of every high official in government, including the Secretary of State and President himself.

Are there FBI agents who have a higher security clearance than the Director of the CIA and can read his e-mail? Amazing!
