Frustration with continuing power outages, travel chaos, and long lines for gasoline grew on Saturday as residents of Long Island, hit hard by Superstorm Sandy, planned to a protest outside the headquarters of the local utility company.
Residents said they would take to the streets for a second day outside the Long Island Power Authority in Hicksville. There are still over 400,000 customers without power nearly two weeks after the storm, and more than 170,000 are on Long Island.
Meanwhile, New Yorkers faced their second day of gasoline rationing. Under the system, which was introduced in New Jersey last week, cars with odd- and even-numbered license plates can fill up only on alternate days.
In Far Rockaway on Saturday morning, more than 500 people lined up with empty fuel cans. Word had spread through the hard-hit seaside community Friday night that a tanker truck carrying 8,000 gallons of free gas was to arrive around 10 a.m., thanks to an anonymous wealthy donor.
A New York Police Department captain, who declined to give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said the mystery donor had arranged to have the gas sent.
"The guy didn't want his name used, but he wanted to get gas to these people," the captain said. "Pretty decent thing to do ... these people need it bad."

I’m having a very difficult time these days conjuring up sympathy for anyone in certain states (and I live in NY!).
Photo op over. Old lady hug votes counted.
Screw these folks. Time for some golf!
They voted 65-35 for Obama - why doesn’t their Messiah help them?
And it is so very revealing how the lapdog media won’t say a mumbling word about Obama’s FEMA being utterly unprepared for dealing with this calamity.
That can’t be. Obama and Christie cut all the red tape and the cooperation has been historically wonderful.
Where your Obama now?
I wonder what percentage are Obama and big government supporters. These people had a weeks warning to prepare for the storm and its outcome and apparently few took the necessary steps to do so. I find it difficult to have much compassion except for the elderly and disabled.
Not sympathetic to any area which turned away “non-union” help.
These Northeast Liberals vote for Big Government, and as far as I’m concerned they can LIVE with their Big Government.
F-em all. The Northeast Rats voted for more Obama stuff. The get what they deserve.
You mean obama and the magical FEMA unicorn didn’t come to your rescue? I’m shocked I tell you, just shocked. Maybe those non union linesmen you turned away could have restored your power, but you’ll never know now. Actions have consequences, even voting for it will not make it happen anymore.
There was supposed to be a nuclear power plant on Long Island but the “greens” put a stop to it.
Perhaps these poor people should be issued their very own solar panels and windmill blades...
I HATE HOW RUDE SOME ON FR ARE BECOMING TOWARDS THOSE SUFFERING FROM DISASTERS AND IF THE STATE/CITY IS FOR THE OTHER SIDE THE FEELING IS: “SCREW THEM AND THE DISASTER SHOULD HAVE BEEN WORSE.” SICKENING OF THOSE ON FR THAT POST SUCH POSTS.
I was watching the NY Gov bloviating on the news last night about how he could not understand how the utility company could run out of poles and wire?
It was the kind of “leadership” truly admired amongst the democrat elites. Blame some nameless figure that is trying to do the best it can under terrible conditions.
What we are seeing in the NE is a prelude to what is going to happen all across America, shortage of basic services and necessities. But it will not be a temporary disruption due to Acts of God. It will be due the concerted acts of Obama and his ilk to destroy America's producing capacity and infrastructure.
The new, improved Great Depression is upon us.
The election’s over so the folks in NY aren’t needed anymore for photo ops and political props. The president got his political capital from them and now they’re left to their own fate. Didn’t NY state give the president over 60% of their vote? Gotta love the irony of a liberal state getting screwed over by liberal politicians. Sorry NY, but you’re getting what you deserve. You’re learning the lesson that many of us learned long ago and that is liberals don’t care about other people and that includes other liberals. Deal with it.
Just feel they are suffering from natural disaster and big government’s corruption and misguidance.
Elections/choices have consequences.
lol
Those in the northeast should just wait for the African communist they elected to come and turn on their power for them, right after he hands out the food stamps and wipes their behinds.
Unions are being self serving, careless, hogs, as usual. :(
It should be a crime for them to chase away workers during a disaster. I can’t beleive the Governors have not arrested these thugs. They have probably killed people and they have surely made many people suffer. If they don’t got to prison, the union should pay people damages.
LOL, bttt.
I think the whiners can all be put in the FEMA camps (some former prisons) — since they love and worship FEMA and the dictator so much.
I never saw so much as a whimper from all the people in the MW — who literally lost everything in those super-tornadoes over the last couple of years. They had way less warning than these leftist/goobt-worshipping whiners.
They shouldn’t have put their faith in Big Gov by voting for obama. I will not donate for their relief as my taxes are already taken from me by Big Gov so that they can help. I need the money I would have donated to prep for our impending economic disaster.
so some EVIL 1%er gave them FREE gas...
Tell them that obama will save them.
There are also all the fancy underground shelters the elites set up for themselves, to keep their government trolls alive. If libs are sooo compassionate and caring, they can volunteer up their super shelters.
I'm really not in a charitable mood toward blue states.
They voted for corrupt, incompetent government, and now they can see the downside.
Outstate, I hope.
What I'm seeing and hearing here is people giving back what NY and NJ have been giving the rest of the country for the past 50 years, which is the bird. I'd hate to be driving through Dixie or the West right now in a car with NY or NJ plates.
After 9/11, it was, "We're all New Yorkers now." After 11/6, it's become, "Let them freeze in the dark."
Yep. I suggest they call obamaclaus.
Nice thing to do to send a tanker full of fuel. See the irony here NY-CT-NJ? PRIVATE DONOR helping ya out.
“There are still over 400,000 customers without power nearly two weeks after the storm, and more than 170,000 are on Long Island.”
Hey New York, calm down. Obama has already said he would not leave anyone behind. For crying out loud, everyone knows of Obama’s laser like focus, this is why you voted for him, right, RIGHT?
Oh, and you White Bread people, shut up, you’re a minority now and Obama won.
It gets better. Someone claiming to be from the utility company (LIPA) called a radio station here in New York last evening and pointed out that the governor of New York appoints 10 of the 15 members on LIPA's board of directors. In other words, LIPA is basically a state agency for all intents and purposes -- run by the governor!
Some @sshole NYC radio host today spent about 20 minutes at the start of his show ranting about how long it's taken to get his cable television back on.
Damn right we're going to say: "'Eff them."
I disagree. These people turned away assistance, voted for big government and then whine when they don’t have free assistance. When they decided to shelter in place they should have been prepared, if they chose to evacuate, they should have prepared. I live in earthquake country. We don’t have the luxury of knowing ahead of time when our disaster will strike, these people had a week or more. To those people who lost their homes to fire, I do have some compassion. I had to evacuate my home once to wildfires here in SoCal. I had a few hours to plan. But plan we did and we HAD to leave. You have to be ready for anything and plan accordingly.
I’m with you....
But after this election I am going to be a good deal more selective on whom I donate to.
People are just venting right now. It’s actually been far less toxic than I thought it would be.
From a distance, one of the main obstacles to getting things up and running appears to be turning away non-union electrical workers.
FEMA is not an electric company. They are not supposed to be a first responder. FEMA was traditionally supposed to be a checkbook to go in after the first responders and help pay for things. The media frenzy after Katrina - fueled as much by anti-Bush sentiment as the storm - led to ridiculous expectations of Uncle Sugar. FEMA has become the face for big government.
You know I am always of the same mind as you, (I think, lol).
I love the idea of the FEMA camps, they are not being used, safe, 3 convenient meals a day, no worries, all volunteer of course. They can come and go as they please.
Why they may even keep it clean./s rofllllllllllllllhahahhaha.
I really think that the media is HYPING this to the max., always looking for a good party to go to, PITY PARTY that is.
To that you will here: "who is that". No kidding, I did that once and got that response. idiots.
FEMA is good at bottled water, ice and MRE’s. But that is after maybe 4-6 days post cat. Temp housing like toxic trailers won't be available for another 2-3 weeks. FEMA centers will be open and you will have plenty of time in the future to fill out forms asking everything including shoe size but all you will get is the free cup of coffee
NE has some unusual customs like running off emergency help because they are not part of the union, turning down charity unless it's from an approved source.
Lot's would love to help but don't know how to navigate the local customs.
Good Luck!
Black Santa’s reindeer must be on strike.
i hear ya... i give to the Salvation Army cause i KNOW they do good work, the rest, not so much
Can't get blood out of a turnip. Only the IRS can do that.
Awe shucks, we don't bite. We love your MONEY as much as you love ours. Come on down. Be careful of the Reservations though, they are still pretty mad.
......"After 9/11, it was, "We're all New Yorkers now." After 11/6, it's become, "Let them freeze in the dark."""..
Fool us once......won't fool us again....The NE left us, we did not leave them, they voted to put a MUSLIM in Office, the same ILK that flew the planes into the towers, remember that? Then turn around and do it again???? BENGHAZI??
But, no kidding come on down, no hard feelings.
I’m in western NY (Rochester area). Except for the urban areas of Rochester, most of this part of the state is quite conservative. It is unfortunate for us that we have to be associated with those liberal idiots downstate. This is the same situation as people in downstate Illinois, eastern Washington, central Pennsylvania, etc.
DAMN RIGHT THEY DO!!!!! Suck that down, libs!!! While I feel sympathy for those conservatives stuck in this mess, too, I actually feel a measure of comeuppance for those morons who believe big government is the answer to all their prayers...
BO is probably on his phone telling those terrible non-union workers from Alabama he’s sorry and to come on back. Let ‘em freeze!
Perhaps these people will learn that big government doesn’t give a rats posterior once they got your vote. There will be no billions in aid to you like thee was for New Orleans and what aid is given will be in the hands of Gov. Cuomo’s faceless bureaucrats who will dole it out to cronies first and leave you the crumbs. Get used to not having electricity, standing in long lines for rationed gas, food and even liquor...this is the new Obama’s America.
