But why have we not heard about this?

Don't know. I find it kind of amusing actually. When was the last time you bought an "assault weapon?"

Me too. But I can tell you you won’t find them at gun shows or your local firearms dealer.

If they pulled a "2/3 of 51 present" trick to enact an AWB or the UN treaty, it would be the same as firing on Fort Sumter.

Every Senator voting for such would be marked as a traitor and a domestic enemy. They would think very carefully before going donw that road.

That was only funny the first time I heard it. This being about the millionth it has gotten old to think some of my fellow countrymen are cowards that think childish excuses such as that would prevail in a gun grab instead of standing tall and being counted. Damned straight I’ve got guns and they are right here.

Count me as well.

I believe in giving a sporting chance.....if you wish to take my guns, have body armor that can stop 7.62x54 ARMOR PIERCING.

Bring something that can penetrate kevlar and ESAPPI.....oh yeah and Kiss My White #ss.

The local gun store was packed yesterday. Prices haven’t gone up yet.

Maybe they should follow the computer industry. Lower their prices to get them in the hands of more people!

F U B O !

That’s not what the Constitution says. The Constitution says “two thirds of *those present*.” Not two thirds of the entire body - two thirds of those who are actually present.

A quorum of the Senate (the minimum needed to conduct any business) is 51 people present. The Democrats have 54 now.

Assuming that there are 51 Democrats present and no Republicans, which is easily done through clever scheduling and other tricks that the Republicans can’t/won’t challenge, it then only takes 34 yes votes to get a treaty through.

They have pulled similar tricks before on legislation important to them where they don’t care about bipartisanship and they needed 2/3rds of those present. The first AWB was passed right before a Christmas recess at midnight with 5 members present. A quorum is assumed unless someone objects. You can thank Bob Dole for that one if I remember correctly.

Travis,

What makes you think they'll even have a recorded vote? It's called "unanimous consent". Happens when the PTB really want something and their sycophants don't want their fingerprints on it.

I don’t trust anyone. Everyone jumped on me for supporting Ron Paul in the primary. Romney, boehner, McConnell, et al - I don’t trust. Same w Reid and the rest of the commies.

" So long as 34 (of 45) Republican Senators stand pat, the Small Arms Treaty is doomed. And I'm less than sure that all 55 Democrats will support it, either. "

Not only do those 34 Republican Senators need to stand pat, they need to also be available for a quorum call 24-7, until Obama leaves office.

Also rest assured that every single Democrat Senator most certainly will vote for it when they are able to assemble a 2/3 majority, for example as all the Republicans are headed to the airport for Christmas break.

(Oh, they held a vote? We didn't know...)

"The Senate and the House both follow published schedules of business. "

Oh, those can be changed. They're just word documents. You know, like that word document that Neville Chamberlain was waving around one day.
