The FBI investigation that led to the discovery of CIA Director David Petraeus’ extramarital affair and his resignation Friday started when the agency began monitoring Petraeus’ email, Fox News has learned. The agency was alerted that biographer Paula Broadwell, with whom Petraeus had the affair, may have had access to his personal email account.

The FBI investigation began when someone reported suspicious emails allegedly sent from Broadwell. The agency then determined that she allegedly had emailed a number of government employees. The FBI was at one point trying to determine whether any of the employees were being stalked, sources told Fox News.

Petraeus, who turned 60 on Wednesday, met his wife when he was a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. She was the daughter of the academy superintendent. They have two children, and their son led an infantry platoon in Afghanistan.

Holly Petraeus also works in the Obama administration, for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Petraeus met with President Obama on Thursday before submitting his letter of resignation, which the president accepted. In a message to staff, Petraeus said he asked "to be allowed" to step down.

This administration, the FBI and the Lame Stream Media knew for months that the CIA had been compromised but waited until after the election to respond. This nation has turned into a disgrace!

They want to prove to the world that the American system of government is flawed by setting the system up, reporting it to the world and showing the world that they alone have the answers.

Apparently Eric Cantor also knew since at least late October.

Come on. Whatever the timing, you have the director of the CIA letting his illicit squeeze look at his sensitive e-mails ( among other sensitive things).
To me this is far less about the suspicious timing than it is the utter foolishness of a once-great soldier.

It’s all of the above. The GOP should have used this as a campaign issue even if they don’t use names.

Maybe it is what it is, but it strains credulity to believe that a famous, high profile general and head of the CIA would carry on explicitly through ordinary emails. Some of those emails were purportedly explicit. The old question: What was he thinking? Or was he?

The Administration knew about this 18 months ago and I am going to tell you why.....Petraeus had a lie detector to take the current job and would have let that out either through being completely upfront or the lie detector would have picked up something when they ask if anything from your background cause embarrassment for the Administration. Why is Fox only covering this?????

Well folks they investigate the head of the CIA, a man who is an American Hero despite his dipping his wick where he shouldn’t have. Yet they ignore Huma Abedin.

That should be very telling.

With his “resume enhancer” added to Petraeus’ “accomplishments” this Demonicrat will be back on Traitorobama’s thug team in no time.

He should have been suspected when he agreed to work for Traitorobama the first time.

And don’t expect the fifth-column ‘journalists’ to criticize one of their own. More like “high-fives” all around, especially from all the other ‘journalists’ who have advanced the same way.

Anyone with common sense knows that someone like Obama is going to operate Hoover style and have the resources at his disposal dig up dirt on his own staff in case they betray him for insurance later just in case. That’s the way those guys roll. He had to have known long ago. He just wanted to get Petraeus to resign and discredit him before he testified at congressional hearings over BenghaziGate.

BINGO!

Up here in New York state we have had two State Police Superintendents resign in disgrace because they and their cohorts were involved 1) in SPYING on the opposition for the Governor Spitzer (D) (Superintendent Preston L Felton) 2) trying to intimidate a victim of DOMESTIC ASSAULT involving a top aide and close associate of Governor Patteron (D) (Superintendent Harry J Corbitt).

When law enforcement agencies are used for political purposes, in one manner or another, freedom is on the skids, it is the totalitarian way.

"WHO at the FBI is high enough to look at the CIA’s DIRECTOR e-mails???"

Whoever is in charge of email security. All email messages would be scanned. Anyone in a position that Petraeus had at the CIA would have to be a total idiot to use his CIA email account to send messages to and receive messages from his girlfriend. IMHO they have been sitting on this since before he took the position of Director. I think he just got tired of being blackmailed. I just hope he has enough integrity left to do the right thing now.

As I understand it the FBI concluded that there was no such security lapse.

People with very high security clearances get some on the side all the time. They are humans. When counter intelligence finds out they just make sure that said person isn't a CHICOM spy or some such. Otherwise it is no issue. Really! All people are humans.

And those on this forum who think that someone who agreed to put his life on the line for 30+ years and who agreed to go where he has to go 24/7 at the beck and call of the nation for 30+years (flag officers are probably paid on an hourly basis less than your car mechanic) agreed to be a monk just are plain out of their skull.

There are some things that are part of that social contract and some things that are not and when we confuse the two we are going to end up with third rate buttkissers running the military.

Exactly! I would think the FBI would have better things to do than investigate the CIA, especially over gossip triangle horse hockey. You can tell from the stupidity of this, it's from the White Hut. I doubt the FBI was even involved.
