'Meatless Mondays': LA urges residents to turn vegetarian one day a week
NBC News ^ | November 10, 2012 | Melissa Pamer

Posted on 11/11/2012 4:39:33 AM PST by Pinkbell

Los Angeles is hoping to persuade people to become vegetarian – at least one day per week. Under a resolution unanimously approved by the city council this week, all future Mondays in the City of Angels have been declared "Meatless Mondays."

It's part of an international campaign to cut down on meat consumption for health and environmental reasons.

Both the spiritual home of the hamburger and a haven for the health-obsessed, Los Angeles became the largest city in the nation to support the Meatless Monday campaign. The nonprofit initiative, started in 2003, is associated with Johns Hopkins University's public health school.

Councilwoman Jan Perry, who introduced the motion with Councilman Ed Reyes, noted the environmental impacts of meat production, and she emphasized that a high-meat diet has been linked to health problems such as colon, prostate, kidney and breast cancers, as well as heart disease.

"Eating less meat can prevent and even reverse some of our nation's most common illnesses," Perry said.

"We've become disconnected in some ways from the simple truth that our health is directly affected by the foods we eat,'' she added.

Her motion posted 12-0 in a council session Friday.

Reyes said it is easy for individuals to feel helpless in the face of issues as big as global warming or the obesity epidemic, "but the small changes we make every day can have a tremendous impact. That's why this 'Meatless Monday' resolution is important. Together we can better our health, the animals and the environment, one plate at a time.''

The council resolution referred to the link between livestock and environmental problem, and noted that reduced consumption of animal-based foods can "lower our carbon footprint."

Here's another example of the government thinking they know better than you. Of course global warming has something to do with this.

By the way, while I'm not vegetarian, I have immense respect for people who choose to be due to love of animals. The LA Council making this public resolution, however, is ridiculous.

Just another example of a goverment body with too much time on their hands, or one that refuses to address the important issues they are faced with.

Yes!!!!! I’m actually hoping the denizens of LA become accustomed to picking their own LA River Polk Salad and eating it a few days a week. That’s what my family had to do back during the depression.

That’s the real reason here.

Bone in Rib Eye if not mistaken. Beef is harvested from Cows that are vegitarians, therefor beef is a vegitarian by product. Also consider the human mouth. Our teeth are those of a carnivore. We were not designed to graze.

We have one of those every Monday. Now I’m going to have a problem waiting. (drool) Guess I’ll have to make do with the “after church” pot roast.

A diet high in anything will cause health problems. That is because we are omnivores. We are supposed to eat a diet that contains a little of all food groups.

There is no evidence that eating all vegetarian will have an impact on the environment. Livestock eat plant matter that we can't eat. I am not at all sure that converting crops to only foods that humans can eat is possible, and I have never seen an analysis. However, human health would suffer if there were an effort to force vegetarianism on everyone. Just like health would suffer with attempts to force a low sodium diet on everyone.

That's exactly where I think all this is headed.

There will be food rationing in the name of fairness.

In this country we have more food than we need.

Other countries don't have enough food.

Therefore, in fairness, we must redistribute the ‘food” wealth to other countries.

This will go from a campaign “encouraging” people not to eat meat on Mondays to LA passing a law that no meat can be sold in stores or restaurants on Mondays. Watch.
The wackos have a super majority in Cali now. Nothing to stop the madness.

“A diet high in anything will cause health problems. That is because we are omnivores. We are supposed to eat a diet that contains a little of all food groups.”

We should diversify to reduce risk, just like with our stock portfolios.
Corollary: taking in most of the revenue from a small number of taxpayers is a bad idea.

You can't make this up. The rich target area for comedic adventure is almost too much. Yeah, I can imagine the City Council of the City of (Fallen) Angels supplanting the old Catholic orthodoxy, and I can see the Angelinos even adopting such an ass-hat official fad, just about the time when it becomes necessary to adopt a food-less Friday.

Growers kill thousands of wild animals to protect the crops so their buyers can chow down on greens and veggies, then set back and pat their full bellies and say....”I’m better than you because ‘I’ don’t eat meat!”

If I were in LA, I would fire up the smelly charcoal grill and grill burgers, pork steaks, beef steaks, chicken and enjoy while the neighbors are eating their grass. Freeze what I don’t eat and enjoy MEAT all week long!
