Forbes ^ | 11/07/12 | Jon Matonis

Enforceability falls to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection both within the Department of Homeland Security, which is already developing advanced handheld card readers that can ascertain whether a traveler is carrying a credit card, debit card, or prepaid card. This differentiation is important because only prepaid card balances will need to be added to declaration report forms.

Maybe I’ll try putting some cash in a re-sealed potato chips bag, but I think somebody has already tried that.

Our social security number has been that for a quite a while now. Our credit history and Internet usage can all be monitored and used to silence dissent. Technology has advanced to the point where access to resources can be controlled by the state. 1984 with a happy face Capital One Smiling Viking commercial.

Great idea if you are a TSA screener. No more lugging around pilfered items from travelers luggage, eliminates the need to sell the crap you steal on craplist. Now all you have to do is go directly to their bank account or credit card.

Lest we forget, George W. Bush and a Republican Congress did this.

Obama and company are just taking the opportunities to utilize these things to the fullest potential allowed by those laws and current technology.

Cards with magnetic stripe cannot be read remotely. Only RFID cards can, but I haven't even seen those. Smart cards with contacts are not affected at all (they are safe.)

Mylar is not affecting EM fields; it's a good insulator, but that doesn't help here. You need a conductive shell around protected items. No gaps allowed. Tongue and groove is the best.

If I were traveling to the United States, I’d either resort to carrying cash or pre-mail all my payment cards to my location.

As long as we tolerate the enemies among us {by voting for them no matter what} we will never see the end of this tyranny. George Walker Bush helped create conditions for the election of Obama and his abuses of power the Executive Branch now has. That is a stone cold fact. The LIBERAL GOP is the enemy as evil as the Liberal DEMs to me when it comes to my vote or support. In my eyes they and Obama are as one.

I’ve heard about this cash confiscation scam in several states:

The person that recommended Mylar should have expanded a tad and said “metal coated Mylar”. Aluminum works well.

None of this is subject to confiscation. You have to report it so they can do a FINCEN 105 form. It is a money tracking regulation. If you don’t declare it and then are caught then it is subject to seizure using your customs declaration as proof. The customs law hasn’t changed, they are changing procedures due to the creation of a new monetary instrument.
