Skip to comments.Peggy Noonan: Petraeus resignation "mysterious"
Posted on 11/11/2012 7:53:01 PM PST by Arthurio
The resignation of CIA Director General David Petraeus has raised more questions than answers, said a roundtable of political analysts on "Face the Nation," including Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan, who called his announced departure over an extramarital affair "a little too mysterious" and "strange."
"This feels a little Homeland, almost," Noonan said, referring to the cable television show about the CIA and terrorism. "And I just have to ask why do we have to lose him over this? That actually makes no sense."
Dee Dee Myers, former press secretary to President Bill Clinton, said Petreaus' resignation "raises so many other questions."
"It just seems incongruous right now that it got from this relationship to the FBI to him resigning and being urged to resign by [Director of National Intelligence James] Clapper." Myers said.
Political analysts David Gergen said a lot of people are skeptical and wonder if his resignation is tied to the September killings of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya. He added that Petraeus should testify before Congress this week about the attacks on the U.S. Consulate there.

Peggy Noonan sold out to the Devil 4 years ago around the same time that Andrew Sullivan decided that his buggery was more important than his previous political arguments.
Who has resurrected this gasbag from virtual obscurity?
Pegs, please get lost already. No one is impressed.
Great insight, Peggy Obvious
Can't recall just what chapter, but it seems like all of them at once.
OBAMA....NICOLAE CARPATHIA. Can you tell the difference?
Hell, I could not stand this broad 20 years ago...she puts the Ph in phony!
Perplexing,puzzling>Not so much
My God, this woman is simply brilliant!
Exactly. I did not even read the excerpt; just saw Pegs’ name in the title and knew the article would be a bunch of babbling drivel.
I think Peggy needs to be tapped on the shoulder and told no one give a rats ass what she thinks is pertinent and that the cat house already has a madam.
Repubs need to subpoena everybody tomorrow!the election was last week.
I heard on a radio newscast this afternoon that Petraeus won't testify until he gets his life back in order.
The message, of course. But she states the obvious all the time.
“Peggy Noonan sold out to the Devil 4 years ago”
Peggy, please go away.
Yep. Piggy Noonan is a Manhattan liberal who masquerades as a “moderate Republican” because she enjoys the attention her novelty act gets her. Once upon a time she wrote a few good lines for Reagan, and that’s her claim to fame. Talk about milking your 15 minutes..
“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” — Eleanor Roosevelt (attributed to )
But then, if Thomas Sowell, excuse me, DR Thomas Sowell, had said the same thing, he’d be declared a genius here.
She probably hangs out a lot with David Brooks and they pretend to be rebellious moderate republicans in the hotbed of liberalism (NYC) together.
Agreed. I'd rather hear from SE Cupp or Mark Steyn. I'd really like to hear Andrew Breitbart's (RIP)take on these latest events.
I truly detest this woman.
What about the lives of the families murdered? They deserve to know the truth
Sooner, than later, so they can start to get their lives back in order too.
Betrayus thinks he’s the only one trying to get a life back in order.
Me thinks Betrayus is buying time so he can practice his story.
Nothin’ gets past you, eh Peggy?
She is still alive?
Yep, it’s time to get this show on the road. The more time that passes, the more likely key witnesses are to get the ol’ Vince Foster treatment.
Now THAT was a funny post!
Agreed. I haven’t heard or read Steyn since the election, but I can imagine his take! Breitbart’s thoughts on this mess would be invaluable.
A Betty White clone.
I tried that with a Judge once...I was only a Sgt...it didn't work..it was the “slammer”
NOW!...a General?..lets watch this play out...is he in Jail yet?
In this case, both.
Peggy Nooner helped put this POS fraud in the White Hut in 2008, and she is still helping him.
There should be no forgiveness or mercy for any of the people who aided and abetted this, the most grievous treason in the history of mankind.
The USA was truly a 5000-year leap in the history of human civilization. We will not likely see such again.
This woman is a flake..I should have known Zero was going to win, because she swore he couldn’t in her article a few days beforehand.
FOX News and/or just 'FOK'? (as in 'Karl' Rove?). ..Whatever -and 'yes' - Peggy; we got the 'strange'.
As for 'Homeland Security'; that alarm went out during Obama's 'Election 2008'; and Peggy; you did NOT hear it.
(And that alarm; can still be heard. As can be; so many more; when it comes to Obama.)
Let’s ask Monica Lewinsky who should resign.
Anyone wanting on or off this ping list, please advise.
I am laughing at your post as she is one of the few things my very liberal mother & I can agree on! She is so incredibly patronizing and her unbelievably fake voice dripping w/ false upper crustness is like nails on a chalkboard.
She finds herself extremely delightful. Go away PEGGY!
David gergen got one right....this is ALL ABOUT BENGHAZI!!!!
Agreed. I'd rather hear from SE Cupp or Mark Steyn. I'd really like to hear Andrew Breitbart's (RIP)take on these latest events. How about John Ransom's?
Watch out! There is a cosmic force at work. One by one, people caught up in the Benghazi Triangle are disappearing.
First it was AFRICOM commander General Carter F. Ham who was given early retirement. Hams sphere of military authority extended to Benghazi.
Then Rear Admiral Charles M. Gaouette, who commanded the aircraft carrier attack task group in the Mediterranean near Benghazi, was recalled to Bremerton pending a Navy Inspector General investigation.
And now another coincidental resignation in the chain of command working the Benghazi overwatch is either pointing to a cosmic force at work, or gasp! a cover up.
A cover-up in the Obama administration?
I know what you are thinking: No way; not the most transparent, patriotic administration ever.
It must be an act of the gods or perhaps the Mayan calendar.
But really, the recent resignation of General Petraeus from the position of director of the C.I.A. has to be related to Benghazi. Either that or to the Bermuda Triangle.
Because here is another remarkable coincidence: Neither the FBI, nor United States Marines are responsible for the security of consulates and embassies.
The C.I.A. is tasked with that job.
Yes, the C.I.A. that most recently was headed by General David Petraeus.
That C.I.A was also responsible for almost all the communications traffic between Benghazi and the State Department. The comms room at State is literally staffed by ex-C.I.A. specialists.
So now not only do we have three people in the chain of command who were tasked with protecting the embassy, who have suddenly and mysteriously fallen victim to the Benghazi Triangle; we also have the resignation of the very top person responsible for the communications thats being called into question between State and the consulate.
Notice how quickly the deputy director who is replacing Petraeus is ready to stand before congress next week and truthfully testify by saying I dont know, Senator?
I suppose that's just an unintended benefit of the Petraeus resignation.
While the Pentagon cover stories on Ham and Gaouette look credible, the Petraeus coincidence is implausible outside of intervention by the Lost City of Atlantis.
You know what else is implausible?
That somehow the C.I.A. security office didnt know that Petraeus was having an affair with Paula Broadwell, or that F.B.I. really cares that Petraeus was having an affair with someone who has a security clearance.
As the F.B.I. has admitted: This is neither a matter of national security or of criminal action.
I hate to tell you this, but senior intelligence and defense officials have been having affairs for a long time. They are so insulated from the ordinary hustle of real life that its virtually impossible for the director of the C.I.A. to keep an affair as anything other than an open secret. The C.I.A. is very comfortable handling stuff like this in-house and making sure it doesnt present a problem.
The rule is that the F.B.I. only proceeds in an investigation in matters pertaining to actual security breaches inside the domestic intelligence community. Absent an actual threat to national security, the F.B.I. would usually look the other way, even accounting for the longtime animosity between the C.I.A. and the F.B.I.
Heres what else I know: There is no way that the F.B.I. investigated this for months and somehow just recently stumbled upon the affair between Petraeus and Broadwell.
Nor did they suddenly decide that they had to tell the White House the night of the election.
The F.B.I. and everyone else says that this is a personal matter, not a matter of law.
This is a very personal matter, not a matter of intelligence, a senior U.S. intelligence official told the Washington Post. There are protocols for this. I would imagine things have to cross a certain threshold before they are reportable.
Lets call the threshold what it is: the Benghazi Triangle.
Cross the Benghazi Triangle and mysterious, unexplainable things begin to happen.
Gee Peggy no flies on you. Now go far away. I quit listing to you 4 or so years ago. Your voice makes my skin crawl.
