Itís the welfare state, stupid
The Washington Post ^ | November 11,2012 | Robert J. Samuelson

In 1935, these transfers were less than 3 percent of the economy; now they’re almost 20 percent. That’s $7,200 a year for every American, calculates Eberstadt. He says that nearly 40 percent of these transfers aim to relieve poverty (through Medicaid, food stamps, unemployment insurance and the like), while most of the rest goes to the elderly (mainly through Social Security and Medicare).

First, it squeezes other government programs. This is already happening. President Obama’s budget assumes that defense spending, as a share of the economy, falls 39 percent from 2011 to 2022. The Army is to drop by 80,000 soldiers, the Marines, 20,000.

Second, it undermines work incentives. This, too, is occurring. Social Security’s eligibility ages influence retirement. If eligibility were higher, people would work longer

The welfare state’s great contradiction — the reason its politics are so messy — is that what seems good for the individual is not, when multiplied by thousands or millions of cases, always good for society. Politicians appeal to individuals who vote, but in doing so may shortchange the nation. Most obviously: The welfare state’s costs may depress economic growth.

Absolutely true, and we are on a path to do nothing about it.

All this government spending breeds poverty, our cities are full of people who do not seek work for generations.

Comment to WaPo: Um....people would only work longer....IF they could find jobs. In the Obamanation, not even younger, highly qualified people are able to find jobs. How the hell would most folks that are 60 or older succeed? And lumping social security in with welfare is a bit disingenious, since most recipients paid into SSN their entire lives....unlike Tanif or Snap, which is supposed to only be a temporary, stop-gap safety net...instead of the leech-like lifestyle it has become for MANY Obama supporters.

“If eligibility were higher, people would work longer.”

0bama’s main goal is to set up a country in which the White “oppressors” work their a$$es off to pay the taxes that go to pay the minority “oppressed” to keep voting democrat.

Government created and instigated poverty equates to easily facilitated government control over the masses. It's up to We, the People to curtail big government. Looks like that isn't going to happen now. At least, probably not in our lifetime.

And check this one out -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL-a-r7iJIU&feature=player_embedded#!

We have a problem in our area with people using their welfare debit card to buy cases of soda - they then go dump the soda, return the cans and use the money to buy beer and cigarettes.

Since Michelle Obama insists that school cafeterias must serve only healthy meals, why can Debit Card users purchase soda and potato chips - they are where “forced” healthy eating should start.

Its worse than that, the GOP is about to make fatal adjustments to the party platform based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the motivations of the electorate.

Unemployment insurance, Social Security and Medicare differ from Medicaid, food stamps and other welfare programs in that most beneficiaries have PAID INTO THEM.
