Appearing on Sunday's NBC Meet the Press, liberal historian Doris Kearns-Goodwin pleaded for the American people to excuse extramarital affairs of public figures like David Petraeus: "What would we have done if FDR had not been our leader because he had an affair with Lucy Mercer?
Think of the productive years that Clinton could have had if Monica Lewinsky hadn't derailed them.
We've got to figure out a way that we give a private sphere for our public leaders.
We're not gonna get the best people in public life if we don't do that."
Kearns-Goodwin lamented how public officials today are held to moral standards: "I wish we could go back to the time when the private lives of our public figures were relevant only if they directly affected their public responsibilities.
This man was a great general, a great leader, and for his career to come to an end because of a private matter that affects his family and him and evidently doesn't have national security concerns."
The Washington Post's Bob Woodward then completely dismantled her argument: "Unfortunately, for the CIA Director, he has special status and he's got to be clean.
He can't be blackmailed or threatened or even deal with the anxiety, 'My God, are they gonna find out about her?' And he did the right thing."

Well, with the way they blindly accept his authority to terminate US citizens with the push of a button via drone strikes, I’d say that is a spot on assessment.
Doris Kearns Goodwin: Electing people who are in favor of sticking scissors in babies’ necks and sucking out the brains is the only way to get the best people in public life.

Obama dies and goes to Hell.
When he gets down there, the Devil says “Look. Here’s the problem. After four years of your administration, there simply isn’t any room. But here’s the thing: No matter what, you aren’t leaving. Obama thinks for a second, and says “That doesn’t sound any good. What do I get out of it?”
The Devil says “You get a choice of Hell. Otherwise, we assign one to you.” The Devil flashed an evil, malicious grin and said “You really don’t want that, do you?”
Obama says “Right. I see your point. What do you have to offer?”
The Devil opens a door, and as they peer inside, they see a large pool of dark water with Ted Kennedy trying to grab a breath, gasping as his face breaks the surface. A Devil’s assistant with a pitchfork immediately jabs Kennedy in the face, driving him back under. Obama grimaces and says “Hm. Not for me.”
The Devil opens another door, and Richard Nixon is on a spit being roasted by klieg lights as he screams over and over “I am not a crook! I am not a crook!” Obama says “Ugh. Now THAT looks like Hell. Do you have anything else for me to look at?”
The Devil opens the next door, and Bill Clinton is lying on his back, naked, while Monica Lewinsky does what she does best. Obama says “Hey. I could handle this for all eternity! I’ll take this one!”
The Devil taps Monica on the shoulder and says “Monica...get packed...you’re leaving for Heaven!
