These petitions are about the equivalent of putting a sign on a tree at your camp that reads “no grizzly bears allowed”

Tens of thousands voluntarily put their names on list of anti-government subversives.

How far could Obama spread it? Try from sea to shining sea. It wouldn’t just be the army, it would be all the armed forces, with the possible exception of the USNG and some veteran militias. Some would defect, but many of your own state’s citizenry would rise up against you to support the Feds. He has everybody from FEMA to the EPA and Homeland security armed to the teeth. He has the power to shut down communications, transportation, etc. And he would! Even though I believe it wouldn’t succeed, I would be fighting too. I’m just too pragmatic a person to believe the states can successfully break from the iron grip of the ObamaNation.

My party registration dates from a time when it was possible to be an active democrat and a patriot.

Riiight, like before FDR? So you're really a super-secret double-agent Republican union-thug educrat....Let's face it, you're a RAT because of the union.

You don’t have the slightest inkling of how I taught,

Doesn't matter. Inside the socialist indoctrination centers, you either tow the RAT party-line, or you're one of the rare teachers that gets fired for some made-up reason. OUT on yer @$$!

You could have at least become a teacher in a private school and have some modicum of credibility...but I'll bet the pay and bennie cuts were just too much for your cushy publicly financed lifestyle.

I am still comparing you to Mathews.

Absolutely unfounded and unfathomable. But I'm sure you are actually a real nice person otherwise.

Well, it didn’t look too serious at first, but it’s now headed for 100,000. At what number does this get the attention of foreign holders of US Treasury bonds? At what number do they start dumping them—slowly at first, but then with increasing seriousness, then with panic (since, presumably, seceding states wouldn’t honor their portion of the US debt)? Could a little ole petition from Texas crash the US dollar? Could a crashed dollar then lead to real secession? History is littered with less probable black swans than this.

For want of a nail the shoe was lost. . .

77,400 now.

Which may seem like alot, but there are 6 million people in the Houston/surrounding areas alone.

This is all very interesting, though.

When your brain catches up to your keypad let me know. One I taught in Catholic schools for 13 years. Two, I was a teacher whose students were never able to identify my political leanings. And that’s the way it should be. Three, I was not just a rare teacher, I was a Great teacher who practiced guerilla education. You allow the supervisors to see what they want while you actually teach the kids how to think. Four, If Scoop Jackson, Pat Moynihan, Cong Jim Delany, and a host of others weren’t patriots then your definition of patriotism is as narrow as Jim Robinson’s definition of conservative. Five, I have friends in the Rockaways, the Jersey Shore, and Staten island who lost most or everything. Some of them lost friends and neighbors to the storm and if you think that’s a good start then yes you are as bad as Mathews. But he’s a drunk, what’s your excuse?

your definition of patriotism is as narrow as Jim Robinson’s definition of conservative.

Right, you probably shouldn't be crapping on the boss.

My definition of patriotism has nothing to do with democrats all the way back to Jackson, maybe farther. That includes Clinton, Carter, LBJ, FDR, the Kennedys, the unions, the mafia, CPUSA, the segregationists, Jim Crow, George Wallace, Lester Maddox, Robert Byrd, the Klan, NAACP, the Dixiecrats etc etc etc. You admit association with that crap.

Not only that, unlike you, I don't join in any RAT games, bipartisanship always means accepting some part of socialism.

I'm sorry to hear of your friends, if they are truly conservatives, they should get the hell out of there because this mess is going to last a long time. I hear there are tons of good deals on foreclosed homes with the banks. If your friends are socialists, then good luck.

Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead in a city/cesspool like that.

Mathews. But he’s a drunk, what’s your excuse?

My excuse is: I'm NOT a drunk.

Not if we want to save this republic. Allies are always required. We took the help of absolutist Bourbon France and Spain to preserve our Revolution and our experiment in Republican govt. We bravely put forward our Monroe Doctrine in full knowledge that it would be backed by the white ensigns of the Royal navy. We allied with some of the most heinous despots because they stood with us against the far greater evil of Communism. I agree that sometimes the idea of alliance is not welcome. FDR’s egregious acceptance of the evils of segregation in order to advance his New Deal is such a case. But to invoke the concept that ideological purity is the way to overcoming our budding fascist Amerika is IMO shortsighted and wrong.

"The abortionists? The sodomites? The illegal invaders? The godless statists and socialists? The corrupt crony capitalists? The globalists?"

If that's your view of America outside the realm of FR then there's no point in continuing what I'd hoped would be a thoughtful discussion. My ancestors, when they came here in Black 47 were called papists, followers of the antichrist, disloyal, un American. they were described as people to be feared and not trusted. My great great great grandfather ascended Maryes Heights 150 years ago. He fought to save this Union and yet his church was burned his parish's school and students attacked. His grandson went to the Argonne and his great grandson to the Bulge. They fought against intolerance and for this country, their country. It saddens me when I see attitudes so similar to those that greeted my forebears being repeated today. My goal is a return to the idea of liberty, individual, political, and economic. As a teen I had the great experience to sit and talk with Bill buckley. His vision of Liberty is one I still maintain and if I find an ally in a homosexual or an atheist or an immigrant I will open my arms to them. years ago I had asudent, a 12 year old Vietnamese girl, her family was here illegally. Having large numbers of immigrants I would ask the kids to draw the flag of where they came from, and on the back of the index card tell why they came to America. This was 18 years after the fall of Saigon, but this girl drew the flag of the republic of Vietnam. On the back was one word.FREEDOM. That's my belief and philosophy. I am truly sorry that it seems to clash with yours.

The states haven’t petitions but groups within the states. I would think those petitioners need to petition the governor of their states and then the state governments would petition the Feds to secede.

Does anyone here know the procedure?

Since I am not receiving any compensation I don’t think Jim Robison is someone I’d address as boss. If you’ve followed the discussio you will see that I have engaged Mr. Robinson on an intelllectual level. As to my friends. I do have friends who are not conservative. I have friends who are very conservative. Friendship is not something i base on politics. Clearly you would feel concern for my friend on S.I who lost much. He’s an NYPD Lt. e’s active in conservative politics. He works hard and often for the ideas of liberty. Oh wait... he’s homosexual so all ill should befall him. I often visit Maine. Always found the people open, tolerant and very helpful. Haven’t been there for a while, but I think despite the evidence here that the people around US 1 from Ogunquit to Bar Harbor still hold those attributes.

Your forebears were good people and were wronged by bigots, however, they would be treated the same way today by the very people you defend. Check out the plight of the Boy Scouts for example.

In other words, your ancestors were real Catholics, people of faith...not a bunch of social-justice, baby-killing packer/munchers.

Instead of the states seceding why not have counties secede? Like the electoral map showing all of the red counties......leave the highly populated areas that voted for O to fend for themselves!

By the way, in Tx we are on our own electrical grid, have plenty of food, we have ports, and we are armed....just sayin!!!

With what TJ stated, maybe there aren’t ENOUGH States — when a megalopolis overwhelms a State’s influence, then you have microcosms of our national conditions.

Split NY, IL, CA ... apportion EV’s primarily by House districts, and everyone gets better representation.

Harder to organize, and if you can’t get your neighboring counties to go with you, you’re isolated and can’t be self sufficient. It needs to be a large enough contiguous landmass to be self sufficient and organized. My belief is that if Texas were to pull the trigger, the southern and central counties would self-evacuate because they’d figure out pretty quick the fun time had ended.

My family in PA were some of the last to know...

They didnt know there was a petition...

They lost their house and land...

and their country..

Well Im not leaving this time...

You leave if you want to...

But when you decide to come back...

It’s a two-step process. First, we need to get the idea of peaceful secession on the national agenda. In short, we need to make it okay to talk about peaceful secession. As it is, one can’t really discuss the merits without all sorts of instinctive fear and shouts of recriminations unless we first convince people it’s okay to have a rational discussion about it. So, I say we who would like to have this discussion cut out all the emotion and really focus on “hey, we just want to talk about the possibility of peacefully breaking up.” I think that we should make it clear that we’re committed to zero violence and that if we can’t convince the other side after honest discussions we’ll stand down. What could possibly be more reasonable? If we can’t talk about stuff in a democracy then do we really have a democracy? I think not. Let’s trust each other enough to have an honest discussion about it with zero strings attached. Let’s just get secession on the agenda. After that we can talk about the particulars.

Not to worry. In this age of instant news and instant video, not just on TV but with internet and even cellphone video, the feds would NEVEE risk a bloody crackdown on secessionist states. It would be plastered all over the 6:30 news and the Internet. Such videos would not only shock the world, they’d be great recruitment tools for fighters from all over the United States to join in the struggle against DC. In the end, the breakup would be more like Czechoslovakia than Yugoslavia. And don’t forget, Bashar al-Assad thought he was holding all the high-tech cards against half-assed insurgents. How’s that working out for him? Not too well, it seems. Pretty soon he’ll be hanging from a lampost, just like Il Duce.

You are comparing the awesome might of the combined Armed Forces of the United States of America (excepting the USNG and various state militias) along with the force multiplier of every heavily armed agency from FEMA to the Department of Homeland Security and even the blasted EPA, to the Syrian (read MB/AQ) revolt against Bashar-al-Assad and his defense apparatus? I doubt our secession would progress far enough to get very bloody, especially when half the population would also turn against us.

And let me ask you this: Who will control the FCC and what people see on cable and the internet? There won’t be a news helicopter or drone anywhere, but those expressly commissioned to take live shots of the capitulation and the surrendering hordes. These crowds will be comprised of the sorriest representations of rednecked, bible thumpin’, gun nuts they can find and arrest (or hire from SAG) and get them on camera whilst rounding-up for the work camp shuttles; all this for the leftist American market and global crowd.

Obama has given himself directive powers to control everything, even our food supplies, in the event he perceives a threat to the union. There will not be any secessionists barreling down I-10 to come to the rescue of their thirsting brothers and sisters in nearby states, because Obie, with the exception of his own defense and supply convoys, will close down the highway system to all vehicles. No gas for non-emergency civilians. The friendly media will do props for him as they do now, and worse, they will filter reports of a secession through smokescreens featuring ever more sensationalistic stories, so that viewers —half of whom will cheer when Ma & Pa Kettle get frogmarched off to the hoosegow— won’t know or care what is really going on.

MSNBC reporter, “The smoke and flames you are seeing beyond this line of dunes is not what they appear to be. It is not a tanker explosion and Baby PooPoo, or Honey WeeWee, or whomever, was not in the cab. Late this afternoon, the DoD confirmed, it is the crash of an Unidentified Flying Object, and Justin Beeber was, I repeat, WAS, on board,” or some-such hoo-haw... another juicy sex story involving the Secretary of State, frankfurters, elevators, and the headlining midget act for Barnum and Bailey.

I wish it were not so. If there is a serious secession movement initiated by the respective governors, then we will prepare ourselves accordingly. What we have now with the WH initiative is not the real deal. When and if we have the real deal, we will be allowed to petition, but we will not be allowed to secede. Those of us who persist will, no doubt, spend our remaining years under marginal conditions and end them by being thrown down a refuse chute somewhere bleak and barren. But we will know we were tested and were not found wanting. We will all be able to look George Washington in the eye and hug Jesus, and we will win that way.

USNG and State Militias are a big deal, indeed. Much of the rest of your reply is defeatist paranoia. Don’t forget that:

A. Much of the US military is overseas.
B. Those elements that are here would side with the secessionists, since most of the enlistees and junior officers are—wait for it—from bright “red” states and are generally conservative. You’d see defections by the boatload.
C. The numbers of armed “alphabet agency” personnel is not all that large. And in the history of insurrections, security forces tend to be crushed by regular Army (see Romania 1989).
D. FCC doesn’t have jurisdiction over cable news or the Internet, only broadcast TV.
E. The rest of the post is typical “woe is us, the media hates us, waah.” Sad.

That’s OK. If these raving libs have enough sense to realize that we’re plagued with irreconcilable differences, and that the present USA is a akin to a hopeless bad marriage, then, just on this occasion alone, I’ll consider them allies.

Humph! Where are all the critics when I posted the story about Vermont secession, a couple years ago??

I do think the Nebraska plan is a better way to handle our election in a republic. The winner-take-all in each state is arguably anti-republic.

Abhorrent to a republic is a direct popular, national vote. That would be the end of the USA. But congressional districts each approving their own elector for the president makes perfect sense. At least some conservative Californians, New Yorkers, etc. would get the sense that their vote counted.

As well as those of us living in rural areas of the People's Democratic Socialist Republic of Illinois.
