Motor Trend magazine has named the Tesla Model S its Car of the Year. The magazine's staff selected the all-electric plug-in luxury car out of a field of 11 finalists that included models such as the Ford Fusion, Porsche 911 and Hyundai Azera.
It is the first time the magazine's Car of the Year award has ever gone to an all-electric car.

OK, who paid who off and/or, did Bammy twist someone’s arm?
Car of the Year is like Time’s Person of the Year. It’s become a joke with clear political motivations. So a car that’s barely sold and has a range of 120 miles for $59k is better than the new Ford Fusion? No.
Doesn’t it catch on fire occasionally for no reason?
Neither does Motor Trend.
Multiply every problem (the most important was a firm foundation NObody could touch), by about 20.
THAT'S the electric car in modern society ... unless modern society is now a genteeler kind of humanity.
Big block eights mean testosterone ... LOTS of it.
Take away the big 8 and you castrate a man.
C’mon... Motor Trend doesn’t care about your car blowing up. They want to be socially responsible. 2011 Car of the Year: Chevy Volt. Nuff said.
I think they should send a bunch of these wonderful vehicles to Long Island to replace all the cars that were lost to Sandy. They would be perfect because there has been a shortage of gas .... just plug them in and .... oh wait .....
It makes an okay hobby car. Time off of the line is exceptional. This is Motor Trend, not Consumer Reports. After some early transmission issues this one seems to perform better and more reliably than the Volt, and is more reliable than the higher performance Fisker Karma.
It couldn’t possibly be used as a first car, but for those who have the dough, it could be a fun third car.
Teslas run on sunlight...

OK but I’d still take the 911.
..and moonbeams! (... and don't forget the unicorns!)
I own one.
It’s more fun than just about anything on 4 wheels.
The problem with the culture pushing alternative energy too soon, before it is ready, is that when it does become relevent the poison pill has already been swallowed.
(Don't forget the $7500 credit (our money) for this commoner's car!)
“Model S ranges from $50,000 for a car that can go 160 miles on a charge to almost $100,000 for a richly equipped model that can go 300 miles. It went into production this summer, and by the beginning of October Tesla said it had sold about 250 Model S sedans.”
This is a politically correct choice with no basis in reality. The sales of “about” 250 cars were probably to rich liberals who don’t even drive it.
Has anyone ever seen a Tesla on the road? The car was built with taxpayer money and no intelligent person would pay for it with their own money. I believe the company is going bankrupt while the company owners pocket taxpayer subsidies.
This is one of Obama-lover Elon Musk’s projects, taxpayer-subsidized, like his SpaceX stuff.
Tell us more! How long have you had it, do you have the S model, how long does it take to charge, acceleration, etc
