Cornel West Calls Obama a “Rockefeller Republican in Blackface”
Non Profit Quarterly ^ | November 13, 2012 | Rick Cohen

Posted on 11/13/2012 7:52:58 AM PST by SoFloFreeper

Despite some commentators’ giddy excitement about President Barack Obama’s reelection, Tavis Smiley and Cornel West took a different stand, calling out the president for some of the shortcomings of his administration and his reelection campaign on the issue of poverty. Of course, Smiley and West have their own critics, in part due to West’s occasional propensity to use highly charged language, such as his 2010 contention that Obama’s policies led to racist effects.

Speaking on Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now! show, Smiley and West tore into the president. Calling Obama “a Rockefeller Republican in blackface,” West charged “that it’s morally obscene and spiritually profane to spend $6 billion on an election, $2 billion on a presidential election, and not have any serious discussion—poverty, trade unions being pushed against the wall dealing with stagnating and declining wages when profits are still up and the one percent are doing very well, no talk about drones dropping bombs on innocent people. So we end up with such a narrow, truncated political discourse, as the major problems—ecological catastrophe, climate change, global warming.”

West didn’t let up: “Richard Nixon is to the left of him on healthcare. Richard Nixon is to the left of him on guaranteed income. And the same policies in terms of imperial foreign policy is at work.” Calling the president’s use of unmanned drones to attack al Qaeda and Taliban leaders in other countries “war crimes,” West went on to describe Obama’s signing of the National Defense Authorization Act as “crypto-fascist.”

It’s no comfort that West and his fellow nazis are anti-obama, like many of us, since his rage is because obama isn’t enough of a Hitler, like he is.

When the next Civil War erupts, it looks like a potential four or five party affair. Maybe we should start watching the WWE cage matches to the death for some tactical savvy.

Obama has much more to fear from his friends than from the GOP at this point.

Well he’s technically correct. Rockefeller was a liberal. And there’s no difference between and liberal republican and a liberal democrat.

My gut tells me that Cornel West’s depiction of Obama is contrived in an effort to make him look centrist. By saying this, West keeps his far-left disciples happy while giving cover to Obama so he can appear as a centrist in the eyes of the main-stream media.

From Cornel West's perspective, Nelson Rockefeller is best known as the villain of the Attica prison riot.

In the viewpoint of a black militant, calling the President "Rockefeller" is a particularly cutting epithet.

To a conservative, Rockefeller is a liberal RINO - to West, Rockefeller is as far to the right as Reagan.

this is probably part of a coordinated effort to allow Obama to triangulate from the Left rather than center. Move the bar on the Left further left, moving the “center” to the left as well.

Yes, that is a silly comment.

There is, however, the likelihood that Cornel West is the kind of person who would express outrage over Nazism while coming up with rationalizations for Stalinism and Maoism.

I suggest that Freepers dust off that stack of old John Birch Society literature in order to find out exactly what a “Rockefeller Republican” is. And while you are at it, Google these terms- “oligarchy”, “aristocracy”, “fascism”, “republicanism”, “synarchy”, “Nazi 5th column in the US during the 1930’s”. One day we may actually figure out who really is America’s chief enemy and his name ain’t Karl Marx.

Old Soviet jokes become the new American reality
The six contradictions of socialism in the United States of America:

- America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
- Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
- They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
- Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
- The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
- They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.

When you as far to the Left as Cornell West, Reagan and Rockefeller would be to the Right, but then so would Bill Clinton.

When I wrote my post, I assumed it would be read with intelligence.

Who is West? What is his ideology? He is a black militant in the 1960s mode.

To people of West's ideology, Nelson Rockefeller is the fascist who put down the people's rebellion in Attica. To West, he is the right wing ideologue who passed the Rockefeller drug laws, which were a grand conspiracy against the black community. To West, he is the racist who presided over New York's cooperation with COINTELPRO - yet another white supremacist plot.

In the hate literature of the 1960s black left, Rockefeller figures much more prominently in their demonology than Reagan ever did.

He’s right about the signing of the NDAA, anyway. Sometimes they are so far left they meet us coming the other way.

Okay. Rockefeller is also short-hand for "rich White guy." Maybe there's also a dig at Colin Powell here.
