MILLER: Guns blazing since election

Obama’s second term driving firearms sales to new heights

President Obama’s re-election has sent Americans running to the gun stores. Sales of firearms and ammunition are way up in reaction to Mr. Obama saying during the debates he wants to ban everything from “cheap handguns” to common hunting rifles with scary-looking features.

The two publicly traded U.S. gunmakers have seen investors flock to their stock since Nov. 6. Sturm, Ruger & Co. and Smith & Wesson are both up over 15 percent, while the broader markets were down over the same period.

Gun dealers are seeing the same rush at their counters. In the past week, gun sales surged 70 percent at Sprague Sports in Yuma, Ariz., evenly split between handguns and long guns. “Since the election, it’s been very, very busy — stronger than this same time frame in ‘08,” said owner Richard Sprague, who runs the 56-year-old family business. “People don’t want to wait and see selection and availability if there are more government regulations.” Gun sales at H & H Shooting Sports Complex in Oklahoma City, Okla., have risen 105 percent in the past week, with handguns outselling long guns 3 to 1. The new guns are being put to use. Miles Hall, founder of the 32-year-old company, said he finds his 55-position shooting range is now at capacity 30 minutes after the 9 a.m. opening bell.

I buy a box or 2 of ammo everywhere I am that I can buy ammo. Filled another .50 Cal box just since last Tuesday.

Seem to find myself in those kind of places more and more these days.

I don't blame them. The country is in a spiral downfall as the Speaker plays golf and works on a taN.

Filled another .50 Cal box with .40 S&W just since last Tuesday.

One thing Obama is good at is being an unpaid advocate for the sales of firearms and ammunition:)

Since Senator Feinstein is promising to reintroduce legislation for an "assault weapon" ban... I put in for some OT at work and just got approved. Next on my list, an AR style 5.56 carbine before they are banned, again.

Already have several handguns, and a Mossberg 12 GA. I'm looking for something that can "reach out" just a bit further for home/property defense. Grand-Dad's 30-30 lever action saddle gun is nice, but a bit slow in rate of fire and short on magazine capacity. I happen to live in a State that allows 30 round magazines so... Hope to have one before Christmas!

I see it as an investment in my future.

I went to the gun store on Sunday to buy another gun, they were almost out of stock which really surprised me. When I spoke to the manager, he mentioned that their sales have doubled since the day after the election. I didn’t buy enough ammo, called them today and of course they are out of ammo..... I spent a couple of days last week looking for ammo at a large dept store different locations and of course they are not able to keep ammo either...

I have to admit that I have helped create the low stock as I have purchased 3 guns in the past 3 weeks...

I bought an AK-47 on Nov. 7th as my second vote, only because they’re so hated...and I might actually need it in defense some day.

Buying another AR 15 tomorrow, a colt 6721 hbar. I was going to wait, but I am starting to see prices rise and model availability dry up. Just a few days ago, this one site was offering a S&W ORC AR15 for $670 plus $100 rebate from manufacturer. This has been the advertised price of that model for a couple of months now. Yesterday, it was raised to $750. Today, they are all gone. I am getting the colt now and calling it a day. Fortunately, I have a lot of ammo, but I am going to get some more soon also.

Just curious. I see both as good home defense tools.

Just be prepared to register each box. Also, be prepared to become a criminal if you hoard more that 500 rounds of each calibre. (One good day at the range). Yes I agree. Always be a buyer.

....more than 500 rounds of each calibre

No doubt, to include .22s. I can see it in the local paper now...."subject had 'thousands of rounds of ammo'" in a half dozen 525 value pacs from Wally Whirled

500 rounds? Ha, I have more than that in 9mm beside my bed! You're right though, that's about a standard day of proficiency training at the range for me and the wife.

As an aside, anyone else notice that Smith and Wesson M&Ps seem to get dirtier than Glocks for roughly the same number of rounds fired?

Buying another AR 15 tomorrow, a colt 6721 hbar

In my case, I just put an AR and a .45LC Ruger Vaquero up for consignment sale at the local gun shop. The AR is an original (pre-ban) Colt CAR-15-SP1 (complete with original owners manual AND bayonet lug!). I finally had to get rid of it because I'm left handed, and every time a case is ejected it hits my glasses (no forward assist or case deflector.)

I may be the only one in the US "selling." Hopefully there will be some interest in them.

Mark
