Ann Coulter Uninvited to Speak at Fordham
The Observer ^ | 11/09/12 | IAN MCKENNA

On Nov. 10 at 12:46pm, Fordham President Joseph M. McShane, S.J., released a new statement regarding the College Republicans decision to cancel the Ann Coulter event scheduled for Nov. 29 in light of recent student reactions.

Below is the entirety of McShane’s message:

University Statement | Ann Coulter Appearance Cancelled

November 10, 2012Late yesterday, Fordham received word that the College Republicans, a student club at the University, has rescinded its lecture invitation to Ann Coulter.

Allow me to give credit where it is due: the leadership of the College Republicans acted quickly, took responsibility for their decisions, and expressed their regretssincerely and eloquently. Most gratifying, I believe, is that they framed their decision in light of Fordham’s mission and values. There can be no finer testament to the value of a Fordham education and the caliber of our students.

Yesterday I wrote that the College Republicans provided Fordham with a test of its character. They, the University community, and our extended Fordham family passed the test with flying colors, engaging in impassioned but overwhelmingly civil debate on politics, academic freedom, and freedom of speech.

We can all be proud of Fordham today, and I am proud to serve you.

Joseph M. McShane, S.J., President

“We have decided that it was in our best interest to cancel the event,” Theodore Conrad, Fordham College at Rose Hill ’14, said.

Conrad, president of College Republicans at Rose Hill, has announced that the club is canceling Ann Coulter’s scheduled appearance on Nov. 29 in the interest of the Fordham community.

Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, or Bernadine Dohrn would fit right in with the academic aholes.

Public education, from K to college, has destroyed America. There is NO argument.

Public education, the media, Hollywood and the music industry. It’s amazing there are any conservatives at all.

The left has controlled education for many years. This is how they’ve infiltrated every industry and institution.

Maybe Conservatives should slow hiring from particular Universities, or look very closely at elective courses potential employees have taken.

I remember in college it was popular amongst those who fancied themselves intellectuals to quote the old chestnut from Votaire about not agreeing with what you say but being willing to defend to the death your right to say it. Nice words, but they were saying wasn't that they welcomed dissent, it was more like "this is how it should be for me when I want to say anarchist things, you must accept my right to be heard". For example, when they'd throw the whole "no blood for oil" stuff out there and everyone on campus yawned, they'd claim since nobody cared about their baloney they were being suppressed somehow and roll out Voltaire.

But ask some lefties to listen to Ann Coulter and Voltaire is suddenly missing from the discussion. They ought to just change it to "You may not agree with what I say but you must defend to your death my right to determine the only view spoken."

I used to work at a very liberal university, and Ann Coulter was invited to speak by the college Republican group on campus. There were a few minor protests, mostly picketing, but there were no incidents. The president of the university responded to the e-mails and calls he had received objecting to her appearance and he sent a letter out to all that said that free speech and all viewpoints were welcome on campus, which I found surprising for a university as liberal as this one.
