Gov. Chris Christie is warning New Jerseyans living in storm-wrecked towns that they're likely to see higher local property taxes to help pay for rebuilding.
Christie, .... said an exemption to the state's 2 percent tax cap law is emergencies like Sandy, which destroyed coastal towns, knocked out rail service and left 2.7 million households in the dark. While municipalities can expect federal reimbursement for most storm-related cleanup costs, residents will most likely foot the bill for rebuilding.
.....
New Jersey residents already pay the highest property taxes in the country, averaging $7,758 per household. The property tax cap law has slowed the rate of increase, but the storm coupled with stubbornly high unemployment and the weak economic recovery here has cast new doubt on Christie's proposal to phase in a 10 percent tax cut beginning in January.
Christie said he still supports the cut, but said he'll adjust the position if revenue losses from the storm turn out to be severe.
....
While Republicans and Democrats are likely to continue to disagree sharply over a tax cut, Christie said he and legislative leaders have pledged bipartisan cooperation in storm-related matters.

No mention that this is a one time deal or the tax hike is permanent.
If they rebuild in the same places, there should even be question as to whether taxpayers pay for the cleanup next time.
If you build on a beach prone to flooding , it seems that you should shoulder the burden. Maybe...don’t rebuild on a beach?
Why is the Fed responsible for this?

My late father always said there is no such thing as a temporary tax.
Government is reluctant to relinquish two things: money and power.
0bama’s Greek Pillar needs to join the ‘Rat Party.
Storm tax hikes. LOL! Hurricane Socialism.
After the wildfires in Central TX last year, the 1680 families whose homes were destroyed were sent their property tax bills to pay, right on time and for the full amount. And the taxes have gone up for 2012 because many people moved after the fire, requiring increased revenue from the remaining tax pool. NJ and NY will be surprised how many residents there will not return, creating future problems for the area.
I'm sure the federal courts would find a constitutional basis. Off the top of my head, "general welfare," "affects interstate commerce," maybe in combination with "necessary and proper."
Or, just have Christie go on a no-doughnut fast for a year. That might cover it.
Seriously, I wonder what was the cost in American prosperity that won't occur, of Christie's little photo-op revenge on the Romney campaign. Maybe Christie and his descendants should pay this amount out of their pockets.
Good, then 0bama can send FEMA to collect all of the leaves in my yard and take them to the compost pile out back.
“Blue” state, swooned over the Sandy photo op, reelected a US Senator that bangs underage hookers and voted for Obama again in overwhelming fashion.
NMP: Not My Problem.
If it was MA, I wouldn't expect the rest of the country to pay.
Except the way it works is the feds make a law that if you don't do it, you are in violation of a federal law, and subject to fines and/or incarceration.
You'd protest that the law is outside of fedeal power under the constitution. That's when the courts step in and agree with the feds that the law is constitutional.
Pigs.
The Fed = Responsible taxpayers like you and I who live our lives within our means and take care of OUR families. NOW we get to take care of the people of NJ. Which btw, wouldn’t you think a state which already has some of the highest taxes in the country would be flush with cash!?!
Bank the insurance check, sell the lot, leave the state, and thank hurricane Sandy on your way out.
Gonna be tough.
That’s just it.
Sandy is an emergency, what would be the next emergency excuse?
We’ll wait to see if Christie just talks a good game, or he actually puts meat into it.
Yep, I’ve reached my saturation point of “give a damn” for people who voted overwhelmingly to destroy the country.
