1090 KPTK Seattle Gets New Calls; To Join CBS Sports Radio (Prog Talk death watch)
Radio Insight ^ | 11/14/12 | Lance Venta

On the heels of Clear Channel dropping Liberal Talk from 620 KPOJ Portland in favor of Sports, CBS will follow suit at 1090 KPTK Seattle. As of today the station has changed call letters to KFNQ, with a likely branding of “The Fan” to match many of its CBS Radio brethren coming. SeaTacRadio.com is reporting that Talk 1180 KLAY Lakewood/Tacoma will pick up the syndicated Ed Schulz and Stephanie Miller following 1090′s shift to Sports in January. The Everett Post run by the operator of two stations in that city states that KFNQ will add a local afternoon show.

KPTK registered a 0.8 share of the audience in the October ratings. The shift to Sports will place it in direct competition with Clear Channel’s 950/102.9 KJR and Bonneville’s “710 ESPN” KIRO which combined for a 7 share in the same monthly. CBS Sports Radio will debut on January 2 with a national lineup including Jim Rome, Doug Gottlieb, and Scott Ferrall.

Liberals are in FULL MELTDOWN MODE with the loss of KPOJ 620 Portland OR (Randi Rhodes suddenly switched to U of Oregon hoops, a team coached by Moochelle’s brother) and now soon KPTK 1090 Seattle. Both stations have run liberal talk for several years.

The left leaning Blather Watch blog writes:
>>As numerous CBS Radio and Cumulus stations prepare to flip to sports talk in January, KPTK is just another victim of the companywide desire for affiliate stations. While consumers and the consumer press bemoan the proliferation of sports talk (“How many sports stations do we need in this market?”), the answer is that CBS Radio and Cumulus need to have affiliates in as many markets as possible to be able to sell a national sports talk product to national clients.”

http://blatherwatch.blogs.com/

All kinds of lefty blogs and messageboards are CONVINCED
in the case of KPOJ that it’s Clear Channel-Bain-Romney etc. in a big efford to silence liberal talk.

Guess what.
KPTK, now KFNQ is not owned by Clear Channel! They are owned by CBS!

Here in Wilmington NC our local talk station just switched from a local conservative and then Beck to Whoraldo and Colmes. Needless to say not listening to them anymore.

“1180 KLAY Lakewood/Tacoma will pick up the syndicated Ed Schulz and Stephanie Miller following...”

Think they’ll get all six of those listeners?

Sports is big $$$ for radio. Back in a moment after this
from Budweiser!

Boston has 4 sports stations (maybe more coming?) WEEI (AM)
is full time ESPN, WEEI (FM) is local talk, Red Sox, and
Celtics. WBZ-FM is local talk plus Patriots, Bruins (if they ever play again) and some Fox Sports. Finally WUFC, formerly progressive talk, runs NBC Sports and Yahoo sports. I have guessed that maybe CBS could do a deal with Clear Channel
to flip WXKS (AM), once progressive talk, then conservative talk, and now COMEDY) to either CBS or Fox (Clear Channel
syndicates Fox)

Anyway meltdown mode in the Pacific NW...calls for
the return of the Fairness Doctrine...suggestions the
FCC step in (note: FCC does not interfere in format
situations). Stations can run what they want provided
they don’t put out too much power, run public service
announcements, etc. They can’t be forced to run
progressive talk if they don’t want to.

Not YET anyway.

Supposedly WBCN AM 1660 “America’s Talk” in Charlotte is going to the new CBS Sports Network in Jan. Currently WBCN runs John Gibson, Hendrie, Beck, Smerconish, Hannity, Ingraham,
Dennis Miller...

Someone used to send me airchecks of 1090 in Seattle when they were classic country, a few yrs ago. One of their DJs was called Buffalo Phil (and sadly he passed on a few yrs back)

>>KYCW would return to classic country at 11 PM on May 19, 2002.

Remember ‘HDH and the Red Sox games we used to have to make our little brother stand on a chair with a coat hanger and touch the antenna of the radio to hear the show?

Liberals have no need for talk radio.

They have just proven that they can individually target 107 million Twitter users with the message that “your stupidest personal pet issue is our #1 priority and will receive our undivided attention”.

Our power went out last year, so I turned on the radio. The only clear am station I got was 1090, the prog station. I literally thought I was listening to some kook on a ham radio.

I can't imagine even liberals wanting to hear such conspiratorial crap. George Bush...and then George Bush, guess what George Bush...

Hey! George Bush has been gone for 4 years now, children. You can come out from under the covers. There's a new guy in town. YOUR guy. And he's started all KINDS of keen wars and caused the deaths of thousands of innocent people.

I worked at AM 1090 when they were KING some 40 years ago. Back then they were Top 40 and owned by the Bullitt family.

I think Buffalo Phil was Phil Harper, with whom I worked in the Top 40 era.

If Liberal Talk Radio can't succeed in the LIBERAL cities of Portland and Seattle, where can it succeed?

I guess we should ban Rush, Glen, Sean and Mark for FAIRNESS on their Portland and Seattle stations!
