Congressional leaders took a hard line on taxes ahead of a meeting Friday at the White House, with rank-and-file Republicans expressing opposition to a “fiscal cliff” deal that would bring in more revenue to the government.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has said Republicans could accept new revenues, but not tax-rate hikes, as part of a broad deficit deal, but President Obama and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said it was unlikely that eliminating loopholes and capping deductions could raise enough revenue to gain their support.

Bonehead is about as tough as a mashed potato sandwich.
I think the Republicans should cave and let the Democrats choke on the results over the next year.
That’s what they did in the last four years and you see where it got the Republicans .

Ultimately, that is his goal. He can stand before the masses and say that the Congress has abdicated its duty to the people and refuse to move the country forward because of Republican obstruction. Therefore, he must act outside of Congress and will simply assume their powers, temporarily, until such time as they get their act together.
The media and masses (the stupid ones who make up the majority) will cheer wildly and proclaim him a hero. It has happened throughout history. It is happening now.
We all know that the minute Oblahblah comes on TV and says he can’t assure us that the Social Security checks will go ut next month Boehner will roll over and play dead as usual.
The spending/debt is a little tougher. That's where we're dealing with the voters looting the treasury. It seems we're still at the point where any politician who wants to cut anything will be run out of town by the recipients of those programs. Supposedly even the business interests in Arizona campaigned against Republican Jeff Flake because he's a staunch fiscal conservative who is against unnecessary spending including corporate welfare. But he did win and he is one of the minority of good Republicans on the taxpayer's side.
Give Boehner some time in the tanning spa, plenty of booze, some golf dates with Dear Leader, and he will cave-in while blubbering like a baby. Bonehead with guts and cajones? Fat chance.
Because they need to differ from the Democrats on just one issue to preserve to illusion of a two-party system. Taxes are kind of irrelevant, in the long view, if spending isn't under control, so it's a "safe" subject to bicker about.
