The lessons of 2012 may not be what Operation Demoralize says
Legal Insurrection ^ | November 14, 2012 | Professor William A. Jacobson

Posted on 11/14/2012 9:00:19 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Operation Demoralize, the attempt to convince you that conservatism is dead, that you live in a media cocoon, that you are incapable of learning, and that your pundits lied to you, is dominating the media.

But are the quick and easy answers — just say Yes to illegal immigration, higher taxes, creeping socialism — based on the reality of why the election was lost?

Someone clearly outside the supposed “conservative media complex” suggests that the reasons being peddled for the loss are not accurate, or at least not the full story.

Andrew Kohut, head of the Pew Research Center, writes in The Wall Street Journal, Misreading Election 2012 (h/t Hot Air):

Postelection talk of “lessons learned” is often exaggerated and misleading, and so it is in 2012.

A week after President Obama won re-election, two themes are dominant. First, that Mr. Obama kept his job because key elements of his base—notably young people, African-Americans, Latinos and Asian-Americans—turned out for him. Second, that the growing size of these voting blocs represents a decisive challenge for the Republican Party.

Both points are true, but most observers are overstating the gravity of the GOP’s problem. In particular, they are paying too little attention to how weak a candidate Mitt Romney was, and how much that hurt Republican prospects.

The notion of a sea change towards liberalism simply is not justified by the numbers, according to Kohut...

Jacobson's piece has a bad link to a story on TheBlaze.com with maps showing what an electoral mandate REALLY looks like in American politics.

Here's the correct link:

And here are two of the maps:

The problem with all these pundits who say that Republicans shouldn’t be discouraged and that Romney was just a bad candidate or not conservative enough or not vicious enough, etc etc is that Romney outperformed the other GOP candidates on the ballot that day. He outperformed more moderate candidates. He outperformed more conservative candidates. The nationwide electorate is simply not winnable by any sort of GOP candidate, conservative, moderate, Mormon, Evangelical, Old, Young - we have passed the tipping point and in a democracy that is a tyranny that will only be broken by some sort of catastrophic situation.

Wow! Now we're dead. Ever since I can remember we've been pure evil.. racists, bigots, violent, "purveyors of hate" . . . and the "climate of hate" we created made Oswald assassinate JFK.

I remember the 1950s "Red under every bed" ridicule of conservatives.

Then the modern conservative movement got behind Goldwater..

Rockefeller Republican George Romney and the modern conservative movement..

July 8, 1964

GOP Warned To Beware Of Extremist May Destroy Republicans: Romney Reject infiltrators and purveyors of hate, said the Michigan governor . . . .

Move the little rectangle slightly up and to the left to see story.

That extremism was Goldwater and us "Tea Party" supporters of Goldwater. RIP us.

Slow down and chill.

This is easily fixed, by bringing back American jobs.

Note to Romney/Ryan: Here are a small sampling of the REAL reasons that y’all lost:

Never questioned Obama’s place of birth;
Never questioned Obama’s reasons for sealing his personal documents and school records;
Never strongly Campaigned from the end of the Primary until people started early voting;
Never allowed The Father of the Tea Party to be involved in y’alls GOP-Elite Campaign;
Y’all listened to y’alls sorry Harvard top campaign advisers;
Ignored Moderator Bob Scheiffer when he delivered the election to Romney on a silver platter with his question to him about Benghazi as the first question in the third debate;
Romney, as the Father of Socialist Romney’care’ ran against the Father of Communist Obama’care;’
Romney APOLOGIZED for his truthful 47 % comment;
Y’all NEVER ONCE went for the coup de gra’ce;
Every time that y’all got ahead, y’all relaxed and changed course;
Y’all kept y’alls advisors that had done a perfect job of designing a campaign to “LOSE AT ALL COSTS.”

Y’all are just another pair of loser RINOs.
Don’t run in 2016 unless you understand all of the above, as we damn sure won’t forget ANY of y’alls RINO blunders!

DUH! I’m surprised that y’all received as many votes as y’all did.

BTW, the only good thing that came out of y’alls Primary and General Campaigns was HOW NOT TO RUN A CAMPAIGN!

What most refuse to acknowledge is that it was unlikely that ANYBODY could have beaten the voter fraud planned and perpetrated by the Obama machine. They seem to prefer pointing fingers, blaming Romney and blathering on about Patraeus' sex life.

The election was disappointing, but I don’t see that America’s fate is sealed. As far as long term trends are concerned, note that the Democrat “Solid South” has disappeared. One even might say it has even reversed polarity to become the Republican solid South.

The social and economic upheavals arising from the loss of our manufacturing industry, the rot of our educational system, and the atrophy of useful skills, make future political trends unpredictable. But there is a good chance that the blame will be put on the Democrats, where it belongs. An example is the Democrat bastion California which is diving headlong into bankruptcy and seems to be in total denial, as evidenced by their determination to put 80 billion dollars into building a useless high speed rail. The fabulous Silicon Valley tech industry has been migrating going to South Asia, and is being replaced by trendy government boondoggles like solar panels.

Romney outperformed the other GOP candidates...

It's the problem I have, too. Romney wasn't my first choice (or second or third) but in the end he impressed the hell out of me. All this talk about Romney the terrible candidate -- hello, first debate! What other likely Republican candidate could have done that? Romney was brilliant. What other likely Republican candidate could have avoided the tiny gaffes that the MSM so capably inflates into major campaign issues? Yes, there was the 47% stuff, but Romney was just stating an obvious fact, and I can't believe it hurt him much. He gave the MSM almost no ammunition to use against him. He had baggage, but every candidate has baggage.

In 2016 Republicans will once again have to run a campaign AGAINST the MSM that has to pass THROUGH the MSM. It is almost impossible to win that game. I doubt that any of the current crop of likely 2016 (R) candidates can compete in that game at Romney's level. Most of them can't even come close.

I think we somehow have to out-communicate the MSM if we are ever going to win without a stellar candidate. If the gifted Romney wasn't good enough to win, we need to be playing a different game.

Even with the clear advantage of a successful lifelong economic background on his side... Mittens could not, after six straight years of campaigning, close the sale versus Obama.

Even with the clear advantage of multiple Obama administration foreign policy scandals, such as "Fast and Furious," on his side... Mittens could not, after six straight years of campaigning, close the sale versus Obama.

Even with the clear advantage of innumerable Obama administration corruption scandals on his side... Mittens could not, after six straight years of campaigning, close the sale versus Obama.

Even with a U.S. ambassador brutally butchered scant weeks before the election... Mittens could not, after six straight years of campaigning, close the sale versus Obama.

Mittens could not carry Massachusetts, or Michigan. Ryan could not help him carry Wisconsin.

That in no conceivable way, shape or form supports the contention that "[T]he nationwide electorate is simply not winnable by any sort of GOP candidate." Not even remotely.

It DOES serve as hard evidence, however, that Mitt Romney demonstrably is (and was) wholly and inarguably incapable of doing so.

We learned that from McLaim.
The one thing I kept looking for was Romney addressing the out right lies ZERO kept using in his ads. . . .

Comments:

-Much as I dislike eating crow, get out the ketchup. I think that Romney did a very competent job. He outperformed many conservative candidates who should have won based on ideology. Is it possible that another candidate could have done better? Yes, but not likely.

-Selling out conservative principles is not the way for conservatives to win. But in the national sense, conservatism is being rejected by the electorate.

-Asking what victory looks like I think is a very valid question for us to ask at this point. Do we as conservatives really want to win in places like the NE? If so, why? What do we gain?

-The culture has changed. While it’s obvious that large parts of the US are still moderately conservative and in some cases very conservative, it’s also obvious that the population centers are not. And those lines are hardening.

-The gop is a dead party walking. It’s brand is ruined.

Yes I have a comment. Until we realize that Obama used his time as President to get his voter fraud set up to defeat anyone who ran against him, we will lose America. We keep blaming Romney; we worry over who voted for whom. Look at the stealing of votes; it’s easy to see. And then accept reality — not what you want it to be but what it is.
