Surgery wait times for deadly ovarian, cervical and breast cancers in Québec are three times longer than government benchmarks, leading some desperate patients to shop around for an operating room. But that’s a waste of time, doctors say, since the problem is spread across Québec hospitals. And doctors are refusing to accept new patients quickly because they can’t treat them, health advocates say. …

The worst cases are gynecological cancers, experts say, because usually such a cancer has already spread by the time it is detected. Instead of four weeks from diagnosis to surgery, patients are waiting as long as three months to have cancerous growths removed.

“It’s a crisis for Québec women,” said Lucy Gilbert, director of gynecological oncology and the gynecologic cancer multi-disciplinary team at the McGill University Health Center. Her team has had access to operating rooms only two days a week for the past year, with dozens of patients having surgeries postponed week after week. …

My father was a pastor when I was growing up mostly in fly over country, but also in Virginia and Maryland. For all of the time I have memory, the church assisted people from Canada who needed medical treatment: gathered funding, provided housing and transportation etc. There was a steady stream of Canadians passing through our churches - often several individuals at the same time. It wasn't just my father's churches, it was/is a program supported by the entire denomination.

I grew up thinking Canada must have third world medicine.

My sister-in-law who is a Canadian born and a RN, brought her mom here to be treated for cancer. The wait for surgery was going to be almost six months.

My mom immigrated from Great Britain. We kept in touch with cousins and other relatives over the years. I can tell you that the treatment available to my mom was in stark contrast to that available to her cousins of the same age. My mom saw the doctor once a month. Her cousins saw the doctor once a year maybe. Common medications that made my mom's life more comfortable and extended her life were simply not available to her cousins.

I know our medical system has its warts but it is still much better than what is available in Canada and Great Britain.

That is exactly right. The Government Guidelines have already been issued to the health insurance companies. No mammograms until age 50. No Pap smears after age 65 unless you have ‘symptoms’ . The reason women over age 65 survive Gyn cancers is because cancer cells shed well before there are obvious symptoms. Once post menopausal bleeding is noticed, the cancer is usually pretty well advanced. But once you are past the age of paying into the Nationalized Healthcare system, you are expendable. Sometimes a Death Panel isn't even needed to ‘reduce’ the number of people that need healthcare. Remember what Pelosi said. ‘Americans over age 55 use entirely too much of our healthcare resources’. But you are right, those in power get healthcare no matter their advancing age.

Sometimes a Death Panel isn't even needed to ‘reduce’ the number of people that need healthcare.

They can eliminate whole swathes of the 40-60 age bracket by cutting diagnostic tests (including colonoscopy) and then putting people on the waiting list for treatment when the cancers become obvious. For both these reasons, cancer survival rates in the U.S. are two or three times those of advanced countries with socialized medical systems.

Actually there are several private MRI clinics in many of the provinces. The article is talking about OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). If you want one done privately , outside of OHIP , you can get one in a day or two. But you’re going to pay for it out of your own pocket.
