Skip to comments.Paula Broadwell fell short of aims at Harvard

Paula Broadwell, the biographer with whom former CIA director David Petraeus had an extramarital affair, abandoned her bid for a doctorate from Harvard in 2007, failing to advance to PhD candidacy after four semesters at the Kennedy School of Government, and now faces the prospect of an ethical review at Kings College London, where she has resumed pursuit of a doctorate.
The revelations about her mixed academic record add to the portrait of a principal figure in the Petraeus scandal who has refused to respond to multiple Globe requests for comment and hasnt spoken publicly since disclosure of her relationship with Petraeus and his resignation as CIA chief.
Broadwell left Harvard with a lesser diploma in 2008, a master of public administration, after one additional semester.
She enrolled later that year as a PhD student in the war studies department of Kings College London, where her military leadership research focused largely on Petraeus, according to Broadwells profile on the school website. But four years on, Broadwell remains far from earning her degree, according to the department chairman, and her relationship with the subject of her research could jeopardize her progress toward a doctorate.
We have a very stringent ethical review process, said Mervyn Frost, head of the war studies department. We found nothing wrong with her original proposal, but in light of whats happened now, I suspect well revisit that process.
One of Broadwells former professors at Harvard described her as a self-promoter who would routinely show up at office hours.
It was very much, Im here and youre going to know Im here, said the professor, who did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of ongoing investigations.

"She was not someone you would think of as a critical thinker. I dont remember anything about her as a student. I remember her as a personality."
Did she claim to be Cherokee?
So after one week we know more about Paula Broadwell than we know about President Obama after four years. Something ain’t right here. (I know, just pointin’ out the obvious...)
I wonder if Obama fell short...
Oh, I'm sure they're all VERRRRRY shocked at that, those academics, you know? I mean....NO ONE does THAT..!!!
She should have used the Fauxcahantas Warren dodge and said that she was an Indian. That ploy seemed to work well for at least one white woman with an over inflated opinion of herself.
Joe Plumberization machine now passing the Millenium Falcon, it seems...?
HOW MANY days did it take the FBI to get to Bengazi..? TWENTY THREE DAYS...?
“She was not someone you would think of as a critical thinker.”
“She basically had no appreciation or understanding of Marxist-Leninist economic or social theory, and as for her comprehension of American and Western neo-colonialist opression of emerging and indigenous peoples, well...”
She’s doesn’t spend much time at home.
It’s interesting that it’s all ways the woman’s fault when a man strays. So because she is clearly attractive and telegenic, she must be characterized as a pushy sl^t, not bright, academically challenged. Some how it’s her fault that the General couldn’t keep the little general in the barracks!
Is P.B.’s harvard grades public information???
Well, she does have high cheekbones.
What about Benghazi? Move along. Nothing to see here.
Actually, she does sound like she might have been somewhat conservative or at least patriotic, so I guess that would definitely not qualify her as a “deep thinker.”
But she’s going to be trashed in a big way now and will probably end up in jail, because I think she, rather than Petraeus, is going to be picked as the one to be blamed for everything. That is, not only the affair, but the entire state of Afghanistan, the Middle East, etc.
Her father said that it was not about the affair but about something else, and I think he probably knew what he was talking about.
Also, I wonder if in the course of her research and interviews, she came across things that might make the regime feel uncomfortable and possibly even exposed.
You know, I don’t think I’ve seen the question asked that, if she’s a biographer, why did she need another writer’s help, enough so that the other writer got credit on the book’s cover.
Maybe she WAS a plant.
I have no idea, but it’s worth asking.
“One of Broadwells former professors at Harvard described her as a self-promoter who would routinely show up at office hours.”
And I bet that fed the ego of the professor very well. I have never seen one of them that didn’t appreciate their students’ attention or adulation.
Pretty common in the academic world...
This is a joke of an article. Apart from adultery, she has a great resume. The fact that a couple of Harvard professors did not like her is, if anything, a plus.
“Shes doesnt spend much time at home.”
Was thinking that after learning about her accomplishments and endeavors vis-a-vis her home in Charlotte, NC. Even with modern telecommuting that’s a lot of ground to cover and still manage to raise two young boys.
If she applied herself more she could have gotten that much desired degree in Public Misadministration.
