Starting next fall, students at UNC-Chapel Hill will be able to live in dorm suites and apartments with roommates of the opposite gender.
The UNC-CH Board of Trustees unanimously endorsed gender-neutral housing after a yearlong push by students who said the move was necessary to give gay, lesbian and transgender students a place free of harassment.
Chancellor Holden Thorp said the housing option would be implemented next fall. Students will be able to apply for the option of choosing roommates of either gender in campus dorm suites and apartments. The university already has coed dorms but students of the opposite sex do not share suites.
This is an important project for the university and one that I think is vital to protecting the safety of our students, Thorp said. We all know about the tragic incident that happened at Rutgers a couple of years ago.
Thorp was referring to the 2010 suicide of Tyler Clementi, a student at Rutgers who committed suicide in a well-known case of gay bullying by his roommate.
At UNC-CH Thursday, a group of students gathered in the back of the meeting room, holding a large sheet painted, EQUAL HOUSING NOW.
They cheered at the vote by trustees.
Im speechless, said Laura Carroll, a sophomore from Charlotte. I didnt expect things to happen so fast.
Bryan Smith, a sophomore from Mooresville, said he was happy trustees were open to the gender-neutral option.
I think its a great step for ensuring the safety of a lot of students at UNC, he said. It will be a great benefit and it will reflect very well on UNC as a flagship school.

What could possibly go wrong?
Like I said to one of my sons, “Everything’s cool until you break up the week before finals.” Is it really so hard to walk down the hall?
So if is for homosexuals, wouldn’t that mean “same sex” rooms? I am so confused!
Makes me want to barf in their socks.
Remember kids, “Accidents cause people”. Or a trip to the local Planned Parenthood office :(
Was that flagship, or fagship, school?
I worked in college housing for a while getting my Master’s. This is not going to work out well.
“I think its a great step for ensuring the safety of a lot of students at UNC, he said.”
Okay, I’m officially confused on this one. How is whether or not your roomie a guy or a girl affect your safety on campus? I don’t get it.
As for the New Jersey thing...the initial camera/spying was done by a male and a female. Just sayin’.
So how many FReepers made a point of voting for conservatives in these kinds of positions?
Can someone tell me why UNC-CH is so liberal? Every time a lefty academic is interviewed about some social issue there appears to be a 50/50 chance it’s somebody from that school.
I read the article, and don’t see how this makes anybody safer.
Are they saying that gay guys will now be able to room with girls, and that will keep them from getting harassed?
I presume two gay guys could already ask to room together, and you didn’t need gender-neutral housing for that.
On the other hand, this should solve the problem of all the transgender people not having a clue what to call themselves when registering.
Of course, this also means that some poor girl is going to get stuck in a room with some guy who wears a dress and then parades around naked in his dorm room.
My how times have changed. When I was a student the big deal was allowing overnight visitation of opposite-sex students in certain dorms. Now they have gone from visitation to outright co-habitation. What next, women forced to room with men to avoid discrimination? Meanwhile, the university alumni group wonders why I refuse to donate.
I didn’t realize UNC-CH was opening a zoo!
Wow...that is why you go to COLLEGE -- ALL THE SEX YOU WANT!!.
Will UNC-CH be selling condoms or giving them away?

Call me an unelightened 71 YO father, but what does allowing hetrosexuals to shack up in the same room have to do with giving queers and munchers a “place free from harrassment??”
If they want to live together, live in the co-ed dorms!
