UPDATE 5:12 ***Eyewitnesses tell CBS7 the trailer was carrying the veterans.
CBS 7 has just learned that at least 20 people have been transported and Midland Memorial has gone Code 1 meaning all emergency hospital personal must report to the hospital. ****
UPDATE 5:04 pm *** CBS 7 is now hearing reports that as many as 20 have been transported. We have confirmed reports that there are fatalities.

What is the ‘hunt for heroes’ parade? Pardon my ignorance.
Those news note stories are a little thin.
Evidently there was a “Hunt For Heroes” parade with a bunch of folks on a float/trailer. The float/trailer got hit by a train.
Our main street also has a train crossing and sometimes a local parade isn’t timed just right and a train comes through.
Veterans being honored.
Prayers Up for all involved. Lord, comfort those harmed, and those on the scene involved in saving those harmed. Prayer for all family members weathering this tragedy. In Jesus Name. Amen. Amen.
MIDLAND – CBS 7 has just learned that a train has slammed into the “Hunt for Heroes” parade procession. Reports from the scene tell us that at least nine people have been seriously hurt in the wreck that happened at the train tracks near the intersection of Garfield and Highway 80.

Who the heck organized the parade without knowing the train schedule?
they didnt have railroad crossing signals?

There are four fatalities and 16 people have been transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, said Midland Chief of Police Price Robinson.
A float carrying veterans and their wives in the ninth annual Show of Support parade was struck by a eastbound train at the corner of Garfield Road and Industrial Avenue just before 5 p.m., Robinson said.

The birds eye view of the intersection shows crossing gates as the protection device. Railroads have a vested interest in keeping the protective devices functioning (it's called 'liability') so it is a rather good assumption that they were functioning properly. Train/vehicle collisions are rarely the fault of the train or railroad equipment.
The view also shows that the crossing is in close proximity to the intersections of Rt 80 and Industrial Ave. A possibility is that the driver cleared the crossing but then stopped for a traffic signal with the trailer still on the tracks. There was an incident of that type involving a school bus several years ago, not sure of location or date. Unfortunately trains can't stop on a dime, the law of inertia typically comes into effect..
No matter the cause, it is tragic.
